In the first half of this year, German Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) is about to visit Prague, with the visit planned to take place during the Czech presidency of the Visegrad Four.
Czech artist David Černý has started a collaboration for a new project and designed a giant locomotive bridge for Eugen Roden, owner of SEN Development. The sculpture is inspired by an 1895 train accident at the Montparnasse station. The bridge will connect two houses in Prague’s Lihovarska Street near the former ČKD Kolbenka factory. “I think the construction will be complete in about two years. The wreck will connect the two opposite houses, so it will be possible to cross it from one side to the other,” said artist David Černý, who co-founded the architectural studio Black n’ Arch. Černý worked with his colleague, architect Tomáš Císař, on the construction of the wreck. The two high-rise buildings, which will be connected by the train, were designed by Jiran and Partner Architects. The whole project is backed by SEN Development, which leases several other properties in Lihovarská. The owner of the property development company, Eugen Roden, plans to set up apartments and offices in the two buildings. The Prague Municipality will create a so-called “municipal furniture bank” (Nábytkové banky), which will collect furniture for socially disadvantaged segments of the population and those who suddenly find themselves in a difficult situation financially. People will be able to donate to the bank functional furniture and appliances they want to get rid of. The city will then provide them to people who cannot afford to buy their own. Councilors have already approved a contribution of 200,000 CZK to the organization R-Bridges, which operates the furniture bank. “The plan we have would be based on the fact that many of us have different furniture or household items that we do not need,” said councilor Milena Johnová (Praha Sobě). The stereotype is that most expats desire to head to Germany or Scandinavia to work, however, if the latest Expat Insider 2019 survey is any guide, they should think about setting sail the Czech Republic. According to the survey, the Czech Republic is the second most attractive country in the world in terms of working abroad after Vietnam. Countries like Norway, Luxembourg, Germany, and the Netherlands are not as attractive to foreign workers as the Czech Republic. Germany, for example, finished in fourth place. The Czech Republic placed second in attractiveness to expats thanks to a combination of several surveyed categories. In all of these categories, at least two-thirds of those who work in Czech companies expressed satisfaction. The survey took into account factors such as working hours, career prospects, and work-life balance. Above all, the Czech Republic is an economically stable country for expats. Overall, 84 percent of people feel that the Czech economy is in excellent shape. Even though many countries, including Luxembourg and Germany, are much better off, the survey focused on the overall picture. Polish health and beauty retailer Hebe is planning to launch operations in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The president of Jéronimo Martins Group, Pedro Soares dos Santos, described the move as a ‘natural place of development’ and added that Hebe has a good prospect in the future as an omnichannel business. He did not specify the number of stores that the retailer plans to open in the two countries, the report added. From foundation, eyeshadow, and lipstick through to nail polish and skincare, all the products you find in the store are true to the Hebe & Co philosophy of cruelty-free beauty. The cosmetic offer is complemented by household chemistry, products for children and pregnant women and mothers, jewelry and accessories, home decoration products, tights and food (snacks). The 14th year of the International Festival against totalitarianism Mene Tekel will be held from February 24 till March 1, 2020. Exhibitions, concerts, film screenings, literary meetings, specialized colloquia, meetings with eyewitnesses, autograph sessions, interactive programs for school children, commemoration gatherings and the reconstruction of political trials – all this is being offered by the Mene Tekel. Tram enthusiasts rejoice: DPP ceremonially christened two T2 cars in the courtyard of the Střešovice depot on February 21. These historical trams will now be put back into commission after 56 years. The trams were given registration numbers 6003 and 6004, and they were seen in the streets last weekend with camouflage during test drives. Before returning to operation, however, the historic appearance of the trams were restored by employees of Ekova Electric. Their repair cost 10.4 million CZK. DPP expects to deploy the trams mainly on the nostalgic line 23. The public will be able to take the T2 trams for the first time on the first weekend in March (Saturday 7-Sunday 8) on line 2. The trams will be on display in the streets of Prague in the coming days. DPP is currently training the drivers for another two weeks. DPP will also equip the cars with contactless terminals for the purchase of tickets, so those interested in the first ride on line 2 on the weekend of March 7 – 8 can buy their tickets directly in the car.
