In addition to the famous Old Town Astronomical Clock, Prague also had astrological lessons in the New Town.

The Czech government will fill a lawsuit against the European Commission over the suspension of subsidy payments granted to Agrofert holding, an agrochemical company of Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš that is currently managed by trust funds. The EU executive has decided to freeze the payments from the Rural Development Programme worth €247.000 due to Babiš’s alleged conflict of interest, which he rejects. The last-minute legal action against the Commission was proposed by Agricultural Minister Miroslav Toman (S&D) on Monday (3 February) and was approved by the entire government. The deadline to file the lawsuit expires next Monday (10 February). The government’s decision to bring the case to the European Court of Justice is surprising, given the fact that a few days ago, the State Agricultural Intervention Fund said the Commission had changed its mind and allowed the payment of the subsidies to Agrofert holding, except for one project worth €64.000. “This is a matter of principle. Even if the European Commission said it would pay them except for one project, we want to sue because of the general decision not to pay the subsidies. We do not agree with some technical details,” Denik N quoted the Agriculture Ministry spokesperson...
Vietnamese airline Bamboo Airways started selling tickets from Prague to Hanoi. The carrier will deploy the Boeing 787-9 twice a week from 29 March. The airline will fly on Sunday and Wednesday. From Prague, the plane will fly at 18:05 and land in Hanoi at 9:35 local time after 10 hours and 30 minutes of flight. The flight back from Hanoi leaves at 9:20, and will land in Prague at 4 pm after 11 hours and 40 minutes. The lowest fares are around 16,000 CZK, but Bamboo does not yet offer the Bamboo Eco class in the reservation system. This is usually the cheapest fare and applies to passengers without cabin baggage. The flights to Prague were confirmed this January on the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the Czech Republic. “According to our estimates, over 50,000 passengers in both directions could use the new route between Prague and Hanoi twice per year,” said Václav Řehoř, chairman of the Prague Airport Board. Bamboo Airways will be Vietnam’s first private airline to operate wide-body aircraft at the end of this year. “We ranked the European market as key, and so in 2020 it is one of...
Free Citymove app calculates the best route, enables different means of transport to be booked and helps to find parking spaces in Prague. The app – developed by ŠKODA AUTO DigiLab – finds and compares various modes of transport – walking, bike-sharing, taxi, and public transport. The app also enables to book and pay for the ride right from the app. And if you decide to go by car, Citymove enables paying for on-street parking as well. Following a free download, available for Android and iOS, the user just has to set up an account to book any of the services. E-bikes are paid for directly using the credit card details saved in the account, taxi rides are settled in the car and the text message tickets for urban traffic will be included in the phone bill. The new Citymove app also promises easy and efficient parking in Prague’s city centre. From now on, drivers can use it to find parking spaces and zones, as well as pay their parking fees by credit card via their phone. You can also pay for parking in shopping malls, parking houses and P + R car parks. The user can check the number of free...
Four years ago, the then Mayor Adriana Krnáčová (ANO) decided that the card for travel by Prague public transport would be called Lítačka. It was not without criticism. The current city administrator Zdeněk Hřib (Pirati) has now announced that he plans to rename the Lítačka application. “We are planning a survey to rename the mobile application PID Lítačka. What do you think we should call it?” Hřib asked at the end of Friday’s Facebook post, in which he presented a limited edition public transport card designed by fifteen-year-old Matěj Hošek, who suffers from Asperger’s syndrome and is very fond of drawing city transport route plans. Hřib said on Saturday evening that the name will remain for the card. “I primarily want to find out what the Prague citizens want to do with the name, but we will not rename the plastic card in the foreseeable future,” said Zdeněk Hřib. The change is related to the digital version, which allows you to upload a ticket to your mobile phone, among other things. “We want the service to be as user-friendly as possible. Therefore, we will also look for a suitable name for the application, which would be understandable for visitors from...
A small firm promises to provide a higher level of customer service As an expat, one of the very first things you need when you arrive in a new place is a good internet provider. These days, internet connection is almost as much a necessity as food and shelter. Finding a good and reliable internet provider is absolutely essential. One alternative to the big providers is the local company Airwaynet. Many customers of the big providers grow sick of playing cat and mouse trying to get in contact with a service that keeps putting them on hold or doesn’t reply to emails. While well-known internet providers offer highly competitive rates, they are often lacking when it comes to customer service. There are some other options on the market, such as smaller local businesses. Airwaynet is one of these up-and-coming internet providers picking up more and more of a customer base in Prague. They are a local, expat-friendly business providing fast internet connection through Wi-Fi, DSL and fiber. They currently cover 97.2 percent of Prague and surrounding areas. The company started as a “three-man-show” in Prague in 2005 with three transmitters. Since then, they have grown their brand significantly in the...

As Central European cities, Vienna and Prague are connected not only by a common history but also by a common interest in further developing friendly relations. Therefore, the City of Prague has today approved an agreement on mutual cooperation, thus continuing to formalize urban relations and address key issues of regional development. Prague and Vienna agreed on thirteen areas of cooperation. The key topic is housing policy, and whether to support housing construction or the system of housing allocation. Another important point is waste management, and the management and maintenance of green areas in the city. The cooperation agreement will also concern the digitization of urban areas; for example the framework of electronic building permits, transport, and infrastructure, which can be used in the case of the construction of electric vehicle charging stations or the cultivation of public space. “I think it is important to cooperate with partners with whom we have a lot in common, whether it concerns a common past or the Central European space we share. The already proven solutions to similar problems that we face as a metropolis are then easily transferable. Moreover, Vienna has long been ranked among the top quality of life rankings, so...
The concert of the inimitable American rock band The Last Internationale will be held in Prague on the 10th of March. Kings of folk-rock, indie rock, punk blues, and alternative rock will charge the audience with their powerful energy at the concert in Futurum Music Bar. The Last Internationale (TLI) is an American rock band formed by New York City guitarist Edgey Pires and vocalist Delila Paz. Their debut album We Will Reign was released in 2014 and since then their fan base has been growing. During that time they performed with artists like Robert Plant, Neil Young, The Who, and many others. In 2015, they joined The Who on the European leg of their The Who Hits 50 tour. The soul on fire was independently produced and released in February 2019. Anthony Kozlowski of Atwood Magazine calls it “capital “R” rawk announcing itself boldly and viciously. It was meant to be heard among this mass of humanity, channeling collective frustration into gritted teeth and stomping feet. Raise your glass and knock it back. They will also come to Prague for the first time in March 2020. The rock band’s performance at the highest level, indescribable impressions, great energy, and...
The Old Town Square is for sure the most visited touristic place in Prague as well as the Charles Bridge. When you go through the Celetna Street to the world-famous astronomical clock, it is hard not to pay attention to the old houses around the square. As for me, one of the most beautiful buildings is the house placed on the address Staroměstské náměstí 552/16. It is called Štorchův dům and also sometimes you can hear the name “At the Stone Virgin Mary” or “At the Black Door”. These two names were used before the bookseller and publisher Alexander Štorch the younger bought it. From 1868 he started to work for his father, Alexander Štorch the elder, who was as well the publisher and the bookseller. But Alexander-son wanted more and so in 1876 he obtained the license and opened his own bookstore and antiquarian shop. From 1879 he also became a publisher. In 1896-1897 Štorch made a big reconstruction of the house, according to the project of the architect Friedrich Ohmann. The most important and interesting part is the frescoes made by the painter Ladislav Novák according to the designs created by Mikoláš Aleš. Interesting thing is that Aleš...
Seven artists were in the running to represent the Czech Republic in Rotterdam. The winner was decided by 50/50 jury and online/public voting. Tonight they announced the results and the official representative for the Czech Republic. Benny Cristo has won Eurovision Song CZ 2020 and will represent the Czech Republic at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam with the song “Kemama”. He will perform in the first half of semi-final two in Ahoy Arena on Thursday 14 May. The Czech Republic in the Eurovision Song Contest The Czech Republic debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2007 with the song “Malá Duma” by Kálas, coming last in the semifinal with 1 point. They’ve competed a total of 8 times in the contest, first qualifying for the final in 2016 with “I Stand” by Gabriela Gunčíková, finishing 25th. Things also improved once the Czech Republic introduced their online national final Eurovision Song CZ. Mikolas Josef took the country to the top six in 2018, while Lake Malawi secured a solid eleventh place finish in 2019. With Benny Cristo now winning the third edition of ESCZ, no doubt they’ll be aiming to continue their recent success.
