If riding the metro without any pants on is a recurring nightmare that your mind simply won’t shake, you’ve finally got a chance for some immersion therapy. In brief, during the No Pants Subway Ride attendees will ride various metro lines wearing all of their normal winter clothes but with the minor exception of missing pants. Throughout the ride, participants will act as if nothing is out of the ordinary! The key is to have fun, not to offend. The meeting point is the horse statue at the top of Václavské náměstí between 4.30 pm and 5 pm. De-clothing will take place a few minutes before 5 pm and then people will head into the metro. Participants will ride around on the metro for about one hour, probably just doing the loop between Muzeum, Mustek, and Florenc, before heading for a refreshing drink around Namesti Miru at 6.30 pm. The no pants rides started out as a harmless prank in New York City, and has since spread across the world, with dozens of cities participating every winter. More info here

Throughout the year, several public holidays are specific to the Czech Republic so we thought it might be interesting to give you a detailed list of them! There are 13 bank holidays in the Czech Republic in 2020. Except for Good Friday and Easter Monday, the dates of the holidays are fixed. The “sliding holiday” concept is not applied, i.e. when a holiday falls on a Saturday/Sunday, the following Monday is a normal business day. Visitors who want to celebrate New Year’s Eve at Old Town Square can expect a seven-hour show with performances of domestic and world hits from the 1950s to the present, market organizer Taiko announced in a press release. The New Year’s Eve show at Old Town Square will start at 5 pm and will last until midnight. So Fine plays American and English pop and rock hits from the 1960s until the present, with some original material. The band is fronted by guitarist and vocalist Declan Guckian. On this day, 35 years ago, the leader of the Velvet Revolution Václav Havel became president of Czechoslovakia. It is interesting that he was not elected for that position directly by the people but by the Federal Assembly (Czechoslovak parliament). Havel was appointed to that post as the leader of the Civic Forum – the opposition movement that started the Velvet Revolution. Havel became the first post-communist Czechoslovakian president; initially reluctant to take up the post, the playwright-turned-president guided his country to greater freedoms. President Havel’s first New Year address, broadcast on Czechoslovak Radio three days later, was one of the most famous of his career, and in many ways was a watershed in the country’s history. “It would very unwise,” he said, “to interpret the sad legacy of the last forty years as something foreign, left to us by our distant relatives. Unknown perpetrators have vandalized a monument to Soviet marshal Ivan Konev located in the Prague-6 municipal district. The district officials decided to relocate the monument in September of this year, which has been met with protest by Russian representatives. The vandals slung a chain of sausages with memorial ribbons attached to them over the marshal’s arm. The ribbons were taken off the wreaths placed in front of the monument on December 16 in honor of the Konev’s 122nd birthday. The local police have begun the investigation of the incident. The monument is now back to its original state, no material damage has been caused. Earlier, the district officials allowed holding a rally in front of the monument in support of its removal. Before the rally, members of the public will gather in front of Konev’s monument to express support for preserving the statue of the marshal whose troops liberated Prague from Nazi rule in 1945. The council of the Prague-6 municipal district voted in mid-September to relocate the monument to Konev and to build a Prague Liberation Memorial instead. Czech President Milos Zeman on Friday (December 27) lashed out at Russia’s “insolence” for protesting against Prague’s decision to turn the anniversary of the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of then-Czechoslovakia into a memorial day. Czech lawmakers passed a bill earlier this month to designate Aug 21 as “a day commemorating the victims of the invasion and subsequent occupation by the Warsaw Pact armies”. Zeman signed the bill into law on December 13.
