According to international research company Euromonitor International, the number of tourists visiting Prague has increased in 2019, reaching 9.2 million visits so far. Prague is now the 22nd most visited city in the world. Even though Hong Kong is continuing to experience turbulent times, the city in South China has managed to keep its first place in the ranking. 26.7 million tourists visited the metropolis. Another five Asian cities then placed in the Top 10, including the Thai capital Bangkok (2nd place), Macau (3rd place), Singapore (4th place), and Kuala Lumpur (9th place). In addition to the number of tourists, Euromonitor International also monitors how much money people spend on their visits. Europe attracts the highest number of tourists overall. In 2019, nearly 722 million visitors came to Europe, spending €520 billion. In terms of the number of visits, the biggest European attraction is London, which recorded about 19.6 million visitors in 2019, about 300,000 more than in 2018. Wizz Air has announced today further development of the operation in Bucharest basing 1 new Airbus A321 aircraft. The new aircraft will enter the WIZZ fleet in July 2020 and will increase the local Bucharest fleet to a total of 13. From July 2020, Wizz Air will also launch a new route from Prague to Bucharest. Flights to Bucharest will be Monday, Wednesday, Friday, starting from July 1, 2020, with fares from 19.99 EUR. Scheduled departure times are at 14:25 from Prague, arriving in Bucharest at 17:25 local time. Departure from Bucharest to Prague at 12:45, arriving in Prague at 13:55. “Passengers can now fly to Bucharest in the afternoon. We expect that the new route will transport over 23 thousand passengers in both directions in the upcoming twelve months,” said Kateřina Pavlíková from the Prague Airport Press Department. From today, December 4th, 2019, a tram plastered with posters from 1989 will be running through the streets of the capital. On weekdays, the tram will run on the historic line number 23 and weekends as line number 2. This tram is a way of commemorating the events of the Velvet Revolution and the free elections in 1990. The design was prepared for the transportation company by Pavel Šťastný, the logo author of the Civic Forum. “Exactly 30 years ago, a major demonstration took place on Wenceslas Square and less than a week later, Václav Havel announced that he would run for president. He had only 19 days for the campaign. The presidential campaign also included a revolutionary slogan tram number 8085,” said Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr. Compared to the initially covered tram, this one also bears the logo for 30 years of freedom. “The tram passing through the centre was the first big mobile propagator of election information. Last year, the number of foreigners registered in Prague exceeded 200,000. Overall, foreigners make up more than 15% of all Prague residents. An Analysis published by the Prague Institute of Planning and Development (IPR) has provided demographic data on economic activities of foreigners in the Czech capital. The results have shown that foreigners are significantly more economically active than “average Praguers”. While the average age of foreigners from EU countries is about 39 years, the average age of third-country nationals is lower – around 35 years. Foreigners thus decrease the average age of Prague inhabitants, which would otherwise be between 43 and 44 years. British Airways won this year’s Quietest Airline competition, organized by Prague Airport in cooperation with Prague 6 City District. The winners of the trophy were presented by the representatives of Prague Airport and Prague 6 during a regular meeting of the airport representatives with the mayors of the surrounding municipalities and city districts. It is no longer necessary to prove a physical card to a conductor or inspector; a mobile application suffices. The newest PID Lítačka application has arrived for regular passengers and public transport in Prague, as well as suburban lines in the Central Bohemia Region. This is another step in the modernization and digitization of urban travel, in where the new transport system started in Prague and the Central Bohemia Region last year. This significantly facilitated the purchase of tickets and coupons as well as their recording on physical carriers. Until now, only physical plastic cards have been used as identifiers with which you could prove yourself during the transport control. Since the launch of the new transport system, the PID Lítačka application has also worked, but it was only possible to buy short-term fares. However, this is now changing, and it is finally possible to upload long-term coupons (i.e. quarterly, half-yearly or yearly) to a mobile application that works on both Android and iOS. The City Council of Prague 2 has agreed to organize this New Year’s fireworks on January 1st, in Bastion Prague area. The best spectacle of New Year’s fireworks will be seen from the Prague Congress Centre, Vyšehrad, and Nusle. It supports the campaign “I Will Not Shoot”, regarding the risks of amateur use of pyrotechnics and the impact on the life and health of people and animals. “We are sure that most Prague citizens are bothered by the amateur firing of pyrotechnics, which is mostly uncontrolled. Regarding this, we will hold a 15-minute organized display of professional fireworks to celebrate the New Year celebration,” explained Jan Korseska, Deputy Mayor of Prague 2 for transport and finance. Although the city council administration agreed in August that this year’s celebration of the new year would be without fireworks, the organizers of previous years decided to keep this tradition. The Czechs have many bizarre and unusual traditions: the Christmas carp in the bathtub, and whipping the women in their lives in exchange for shots of alcohol at Easter, just to name a few. On December 5th is possibly the Czech Republic’s most bizarre, and terrifying tradition: St Nicholas Day. There are a few legends about him, the most known is probably that one, which says how he saved there poor young sisters. Their father had no money, so the girls were about to become prostitutes to make their living. Nicholas heard of it, and at night, when no one could have seen him, threw three purses filled with gold coins into the house, so the sisters were saved. Nicholas inherited a lot of money from his rich parents and thus he gave many other anonymous gifts to the poorest people. Later it was found, that the benefactor was he, and after his death, rich people were anonymously gifting the poor ones in his honor.
