This year’s Prague Pride will parade through Prague Center on Saturday the 10th of August. The route will stay the same as previous years, with the starting point at Václavské Náměstí to Letná. The approximate number of participants is 30 thousand people celebrating the lives of the LGBTQIA+ community. The festival with a parade first happened in August 2011. Back then it attracted a will conundrum of conservative people protesting against it, as according to them it was an obscene showcase that was trying to force the idea of homosexuality on them. This phrase was also used by at the time president Václav Klaus, which according to him, it was something that needed to be fought against. Fortunately, the protests kept getting weaker and weaker with every passing year and now Prague Pride participants can feel safer than in previous years. The City of Prague has undertaken an inventory of its housing fund and the apartments it owns. The analysis showed that the city, along with the city districts, manages over 31,000 apartments. Of these 31,000 municipal dwellings, nearly 8% are currently unoccupied. The analysis also showed that the municipal housing fund in Prague is relatively small compared to other cities. For the first time ever, complete data was obtained on the city’s housing stock in all 57 municipal districts through an initiative led by the City Councillor for Housing, Adam Zábranský. An analysis by the Prague Institute of Planning and Development (IPR) showed that out of a total of 31,456 municipal apartments, 2,409 are unoccupied. Many of these empty apartments are in poor condition and would require renovation before they could be rented. Only 266 apartments are currently ready for tenants to move in without renovations. “Apartments that have not been repaired, regardless of whether they are managed by the city districts, need to be improved as soon as possible. In 2050, Prague’s climate will feel more like Naples’s, according to a new climate change study. Hundreds of other major cities worldwide could be facing droughts, flooding, storms, and other climate catastrophes, said the study, which was conducted by the Crowther Lab at ETH Zurich university. Some of these climate effects aren’t even known or predictable yet — a fifth of cities, including Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, and Singapore, are facing conditions so extreme they don’t currently exist anywhere in the world, according to the study. The study predicted the future climate conditions of 520 major cities worldwide, and paired those predictions with the conditions of cities today. By 2050, Madrid will feel more like Marrakesh, Seattle will feel like San Francisco, and New York will feel like Virginia Beach, according to the report. An estimated 77% of cities around the world will see their climate conditions drastically change, indicating “the global scale of this climate change threat and associated risks for human health,” the study warned. French artist Tatiana Bongonga will be walking a tightrope 35 metres above the Vltava river. The rope will be 350 meters long. The dizzying spectacle will take place on Wednesday, August 14 from 6 pm and is accompanied by a chamber orchestra, without any safety equipment. The rope will go from the Faculty of Law, across the Vltava River to Letná Park. Acrobats practicing tightrope walking, also called funambulism, maintain their balance by positioning their center of mass directly over their base of support, a rope or a wire. Two graffiti “artists” took his craft to Prague’s Charles Bridge yesterday, leaving the city’s landmark with not just a tag but a mostly-illegible diatribe that stretches for about 5 meters down the Bridge’s side wall towards the Old Town end. The vandal appears to be two foreigners. They sprayed the pillar of the Charles Bridge, located between Kampa and the street at the Lusatian Seminary. Police officers arrested the two men immediately. Because Charles Bridge is a national monument, the offender faces a higher penalty that could result in a maximum sentence of three years in prison. The vandalism occurred yesterday at around ten in the evening. Graffiti on national monuments is rare but not unknown: A Japanese tourist in December 2014 painted on an underpass that was part of the National Theater. Czech scientists placed 26th in the prestigious Global Nature Index 2018, ranking closely alongside Finland and Norway. The renowned Global Nature Index is created by Nature magazine and the final ranking is based on articles published in 82 selected science journals worldwide. The Czech Republic placed 26th with 191.1 points, which is roughly at the same level as Finland in 25th and Norway in 27th. The overall placement of the Czech Republic is remarkable as it is not as big as Poland which received 224.6 points. The strongest Czech institution in basic research is the Academy of Sciences with 84.1 points, which made the 172nd place in the ranking. The number of Czech scientific papers that have the potential to rewrite textbooks and the state of human knowledge is also more than twice as high as in Hungary (38th). Another V4 country, Slovakia, did not make it into the top 50. “The Czech institutions simply cannot be ignored by the world rankings. The Czech Republic is the most sustainable country in Central and Eastern Europe, according to the 2019 Sustainable Development Report, published by the United Nations together with the Bertelsmann Stiftung and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN). Countries in the report were evaluated on 17 key criteria for sustainable development, including eliminating poverty and hunger, establishing quality education, providing access to clean water and sanitation, promoting responsible consumption and production, having access to a decent workplace and contributing to the economic growth. Four years after the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement, no country is on track to meet all the goals. Overall, emerging Europe’s countries obtain their best performance when it comes to erasing poverty and promoting affordable and clean energy. But compared to other regions, when it comes to the rule of law, peace, justice and strong institutions, CEE lags behind, due to relatively high perceived corruption in some countries, poor freedom of speech or insecurity. The Czech police uncovered cocaine worth 750,000 crowns and a cash sum in the car of a foreigner coming from Africa whom they have accused of drug dealing in Prague and who faces up to ten years in prison, if convicted, Prague Police spokeswoman Eva Kropacova said on Friday. Police found over fifty bags of drug already prepared for the sale, and two bags with 200,000 Kč and EUR 500 in cash. The suspect has several dozens of regular clients who bought drugs from him. According to police, the 34-years-old dealer has been selling drugs since 2008. The man could face up to 10 years in jail.
Czech customs officers found five undocumented foreigners claiming to have come from Afghanistan in a North Macedonian lorry during a regular check of lorries in Brno-Slatina on Thursday. The North Macedonian lorry driver said he had not known about the foreigners hiding inside. “Customs authority officers were checking a North Macedonian lorry transporting car parts to the Czech Republic from Poland this afternoon. The security seal of the cargo space was in order at first sight and corresponded to the documents, but a closer look revealed that it had probably been broken and repaired carefully,” South Moravian Customs Authority spokeswoman Lada Temnakova said. Germany has reported an increase in the number of illegal migrants entering the country from the Czech Republic. The Czech government on July 8 gave preliminary approval for Elektrárna Dukovany II, a subsidiary of utility ČEZ, to build at least one new nuclear power unit in the country, along with as many as three more at existing nuclear power plants at Dukovany and Temelín. The government in its resolution published Monday said it would provide the utility with loan guarantees to help secure financing for any new reactors. ČEZ is 70% owned by the Czech government. Reports said construction of any new units is years away, though equipment and technology suppliers could be chosen within the next five years. Expectations are that at least one 1,200-MW reactor would be built at Dukovany by 2035 to replace four existing units that are scheduled to be shut down between 2035 and 2037. New capacity at Temelín would be built at a later date. The concerts count as the most visited shows ever held in the Czech Republic, organizers told CTK on Tuesday.
