The historic Máj department store, undergoing reconstruction since July 2022, is set to unveil its new look to the public on Thursday, June 20th. The revamped Máj won’t just be a shopping destination. It will offer a diverse mix of shops, restaurants, cafes with scenic views, and an entertainment space. The building’s facade will be adorned with an artwork by Czech sculptor David Černý, adding a touch of artistic flair to the modern design. Construction is nearing completion, with work currently focused on fitting out individual shops and creating a spectacular “crystal sky” arcade alongside a sleek white escalator hall. The first basement level will host a brand-new Tesco store. The ground and first floors will cater to restaurants, cafes, florists, accessories, drugstores, and more. And, it is tied with quite a few “pink” events, which include the Pink May the degustation festival of rosé wines and clarets. The festival is a wonderful platform for winemakers to present their wines. You can make the most of the gastronomic open-air event, which will take place on Saturday, May 18, from 11.00 am to 9.00 pm at Náplavka (Rašín embankment). The Festival of Embassies is the largest international street food festival in Prague, where each country’s presentations are primarily showcased by their embassies, honorary consulates, or chambers of commerce. The event will be attended by ambassadors in person, making it a truly unique event in our country in terms of the number of participating countries. The main organizers are the Prague 6 Municipal District and the Association Farmers’ Markets, which also organize the Markets in Kulaťák. Czech farmers are planning a major protest in Prague on Wednesday, May 22nd. This follows protests in February and March, when they rallied against the government and agriculture policies set by the European Union. The head of the Czech Chamber of Agriculture, Jan Doležal, said that they will keep protesting until the government listens to their main demands. However, Doležal expressed frustration with the government’s perceived lack of action, even on issues that wouldn’t require significant financial investment. He suggested the government might be hesitant to engage in dialogue but assured that farmers remain open to discussions. Doležal said the farmers are getting desperate and frustrated, and they’re worried things won’t get better. The Chamber is planning more protests in early June, possibly with farmers from other European countries. “Our goal is not to block the traffic in Prague, our goal is to present the problems in agriculture,” said Martin Pycha, the head of the Czech Agricultural Association, one of the organizers of the protest. The Prague Metro turns 50 today! On May 9th, 1974, the first section of Line C, stretching 6.6 kilometers with 9 stations, opened its doors to the public. Today, the network boasts a tenfold increase, with 61 stations spanning the bustling Czech capital. The concept of a Prague subway dates back surprisingly far – 1898, to be exact. Ladislav Rott, a visionary engineer, presented a proposal to the city’s electricity company. Unfortunately, the idea wasn’t embraced at the time. Another proposal in 1926, by Bohumil Belada and Vladimír List, was the first to use the term “Metro”, and though it was not accepted either, it served as an impulse for moving towards a real solution of the rapidly developing transport in Prague. In the early 1960s the concept of the sub-surface tramway was finally accepted and on 9 August 1967 the building of the first station (Hlavní nádraží) started. However, in the same year, a substantial change in the concept came, as the government, under the influence of Soviet advisers, decided to build a true metro system instead of an underground tramway. The historic Paternoster elevator in Prague’s Old Town Hall will reopen its doors to tourists in June, but this time with a fee. As iDNES reports, tickets will cost around CZK 250 and will be managed by Prague City Tourism (PCT). PCT will also organize guided tours that include the elevator. The decision to charge for entry comes after a surge in tourist interest a few years ago, largely fueled by a popular video guide. The influx of visitors caused damage to the elevator and disrupted operations at the Town Hall. The authorities have since modified the area to restrict access to other parts of the building from the elevator. Paternosters, a unique elevator design with continuously circulating cabins, are no longer considered elevators under Czech regulations. This allows them to continue operating without needing expensive upgrades to meet modern elevator safety standards. However, the lack of safety features and the large number of tourists unfamiliar with how to use them safely led to concerns about damage and potential injuries.
