A plan from Czech railways to replace the emblematic landmark with a modern structure is facing an impassioned backlash. Last November, the Railway Administration (Správa železnic) announced that the old steel bridge going from Výton to Smíchov will be discarded. Designed by František Prášil, a Czech engineer of the late Habsburg era, the bridge was built in 1901 and spans the Vltava river, carrying mainline trains between Prague and other European cities, including Munich. The plan is for it to be replaced by a new white bridge, which is planned to be wider and include one additional track, sparking controversy. Recently, real estate prices in Prague have been falling. So much so that by the end of 2022 the average price of older apartments in Prague has returned to the same values as the end of 2021. This fall in prices is best characterized by a study by the European Housing Service (EHS), which shows that within Prague the average 65 sqm apartment has lost CZK 680,000 of value. At the start of 2022, an older apartment within Prague cost approximately CZK 123,000 per sqm. By Q4 this approximation has changed to CZK 112,500, practically the same as 2021 prices. The crown jewels of the Kingdom of Bohemia are to be displayed to the public from January 17 to 21, 2023. All Prague buses, electric buses, and trolleybuses will be equipped with contactless payment terminals in the coming days. At the moment they are only available in trams and underground entrance halls. The announcement was made by Daniel Šabík, DPP’s spokesman. Prague has purchased the terminals for its entire bus fleet of about 1,200 vehicles. “In every bus, electric bus and trolleybus, the self-service terminals will be located near the second door. Passengers will be able to buy 30- or 90-minute tickets, as well as 24-hour tickets. The purchase is available with Europay, MasterCard, or Visa,” said Šabík. The terminals will also allow payments through the Apple Pay and Google Pay apps. There are also discounted fares for children and seniors for CZK 12, CZK 16, and CZK 55. After buying a ticket from the terminal, the printed ticket is already validated and therefore there is no need of its additional validation.
