In 2019, the Czech capital set a goal of planting a million new trees on its territory within eight years. Since the adoption of this plan, 370,000 new trees have been planted in Prague to date. These appear in emerging forest parks, city parks, orchards, and in the streets of the city. Trees play an irreplaceable role in adapting the city to climate change. “We also add trees to parks in the city centre, and plant them along brooks and ponds. Soviet military commander Ivan Konev may be stripped of his honorary citizenship in Prague city, the Czech News Agency reported. This initiative was launched by the mayor of Prague Zdeněk Hřib. Next Monday, May 9, it will be considered by the city council. Konev, who led the Red Army’s liberation of Prague, became an honorary citizen of the city in June 1945. The seventh annual Beer and Burger (‘Pivo a Burger’) Festival will return to Karlínské náměstí on May 22, from 11 am. A total of 25 burger stands will be operating throughout the day, including many of the Czech favorite food trucks and burger joints. The Prague Marathon is returning! One of the seven fastest marathons in the world will take place on Sunday, May 8. This world-class event was launched in 1995 under the patronage of legendary Olympic champion Emil Zátopek. A man who climbed up a construction crane in Hybernska street was later brought safely to the ground following a high-stakes rescue operation Sunday morning. Eyewitnesses first called the police. The officers climbed the crane several meters, but when they realize that the man was not able to go down on his own, they called firemen. Two firefighters specializing in high-climb rescues were sent in to climb the crane boom and rappel down to the man. Officials said the decision was made not to move the crane and to have both the firefighters and the man rappel down together. “In a conversation between the crane operator and the rescuer at the tip, there was some concerns around a series of moving parts and there would have been a lot of moving cables, pulleys and so forth,” they added. It took 30 minutes for crews to safely return the man to the ground. The citizen was heavily drunk – more than 2 per mille was found in his blood. Construction of metro D, the fourth subway line, officially began last week. When finished, it will extend from Náměstí Míru to Depo Písnice in the south of the city.
