This year, the Prague Exhibition Centre together with the Industrial Palace celebrates 130 years since its opening. When architect Bedřich Münzberg was tasked with building the Industrial Palace, he wanted to take the traditional bricks and plasterwork approach. But his plans were thwarted by the young architects who had just come back from Paris, brimming with ideas. In 1889 Paris hosted the World Fair, and there they had just seen the impressive Eiffel Tower for the first time. This was such an inspiration that they badgered Münzberg to implement a similar concept. And that’s how the building came to be a half-iron, half traditional construction. This was quite unprecedented at the time. Grand opening in 1891 The Prague Exhibition Centre construction itself was certainly not plain and simple. It had to contend with a tragic flood and workers’ strikes. Despite these obstacles, it finally opened its doors in 1891. Another four metro stations in Prague now have mobile coverage, Prague Mayor Zdeněk Hřib announced on Friday. They are the Vysočanská, Kolbenova, and Hloubětín stations on the B line and Kobylisy on the C line of the Prague underground. As of today, 50 stations out of 61 are covered with LTE services. The remaining stations should be covered by the end of the year with the exception of Jiřího z Poděbrad which will be undergoing extensive renovation. According to the previous plan, the entire metro should be covered with a mobile signal by early 2022. To provide complete 4G LTE coverage in its metro tunnels, DPP has installed a radiating cable (approximately 5 cm diameter) type network. The only exception to this is in the newest section of Metro Line A – Bořislavka, Nádraží Veleslavín, Petřiny and Nemocnice Motol – where an LTE network, providing phone and high-speed data connectivity, was installed as part of the initial construction. Prices for some tickets on the Prague Integrated Transit (PID) system will increase on August 1, but the annual pass will remain the same. Tickets for 30 minutes on the city’s buses, trams and metro in Prague system will increase in price from CZK 24 to CZK 30. Ninety-minute tickets will go up from the current CZK 32 to CZK 40. Tickets obtained by text message will also go up in price. “If we want to maintain and further develop the public transport system of Prague and the Central Bohemian Region, it is necessary to agree on common prices for at least one-time tickets. Paying fines for fare-dodging in Prague has become easier. Prague Public Transport (DPP) introduced a new possibility of paying a fine online via their official e-shop. If a passenger does not have a ticket, he/she has the opportunity to pay the reduced amount of CZK 800 through the e-shop within 5 working days. If you don’t have a valid ticket, the basic fine is CZK 1,500, which is reduced to CZK 800, if you pay immediately or within 15 calendar days of the ticket inspection. In 2019, DPP inspectors checked 6.8 million passengers and imposed over 247,000 fines, 5.6 percent more year-on-year. From 2019, the fine can also be paid by card during the inspection. Prague Airport wants to be carbon neutral by 2030 with the help of new technologies, more economical engines, sustainable fuels, and hydrogen or electric propulsion of aircraft. Therefore, Prague Airport has joined the International Association of Airports’ (ACI) Net Zero initiative. ACI associates more than 200 airports committed to achieving Net Carbon Neutrality. The Net Zero initiative aims to achieve net carbon neutrality by 2050 at the latest. However, Prague Airport, through particular steps, has been targeting a 2030 deadline. In the context of the Covid-19 crisis, this is an ambitious goal. The airport has been actively reducing CO2 emissions since 2010 when it joined the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. The Gray Man, a $200 million Netflix blockbuster starring Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling will be shooting in the Czech capital through July 20. The action on The Gray Man is now taking place during daytime hours, between 9:30 and 19:00 in Prague 7, especially in the area of Dukelských hrdinů and surroundings. A charity concert for tornado victims in South Moravia featuring top local acts will take place at Prague’s Wenceslas Square on Wednesday. Thunderstorms, hailstones the size of tennis balls and a tornado of over 200 kilometers per hour hit the Břeclav and Hodonín districts in South Moravia. Moravská Nová Ves, Hrušky, Mikulčice, Lužice and Hodonín were the spots that suffered the most. Some 1,200 houses were damaged and six lives were lost. The leading bands of the Czech music scene have also decided to help, performing on Wenceslas Square as part of the Together for Moravia concert on Wednesday, July 7 at 8 pm. Citizens can report vandalism via the “Bez Graffiti” mobile application. Tackling graffiti is a challenge for many cities around the world. By vandalising property and defiling public spaces, graffiti decreases the attractiveness of cities. Often, one can see hate speech sprayed onto walls, monuments, and properties. Unsurprisingly, this decreases the quality of life for citizens and gives rise to deeper issues. Now, the City of Prague has set its sight on fighting this problem with a pilot project to remove graffiti from city buildings. To successfully do so, it has entrusted the municipal company Technology of the Capital City of Prague (THMP) and released a new mobile application where citizens can report vandalism. “Graffiti in a public space is a long-standing problem, defiling public areas and destroying both public and private property. I am convinced that in addition to correcting vandalism, the project will also have an important preventive role. When sprayers see that their creations on surfaces covered with anti-graffiti paint disappear again, they will lose the motivation to continue,” explained Councillor Jan Chabr.
