Třešňovka Park in Prague 9 has been ornamented with a whimsical yet simple art installation. It was installed on April 16 and will stay in place until May 2. The art installation consists of a long white fabric that has been hung on the tree’s branches, connecting them and flowing from one tree to another. The white fabric supposedly embodies and represents transient energy and movement – something fleeting and temporary. They are supposed to stand in contrast to the permanent and solid nature of the trees. The symbolism is quite abstract and deep, but the display itself does add quite a charm to the orchard. “The fabric is dragged with it completely without purpose, moving gracefully and randomly through space, as we do when we walk past through it.” commented its author Tomáš Kodet. Kodet regularly walks in this orchard garden, and was evidently inspired and intrigued by the sigh of the old cherry trunks. A new mural is being created in Prague’s Libeň district, where the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich – the commander of the Reich Main Security Office and acting governor of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia – took place on 27 May 1942. The art project is portrayed by architecture student Jakub Marek. The mural – a combination of comics and graffiti – will be completed in the coming weeks and ceremoniously unveiled on May 22, 2021, said to ČTK the spokesman of Prague 8, Martin Šalek. “The unsightly concrete wall that undermines the surroundings of Vychovatelna street will soon turn into something completely new,” added Prague 8 councilor Michal Švarc. Planned by British special operations and supported by the Czechoslovak government-in-exile, the preparation for Heydrich’s assassination called Operation Anthropoid involved officers Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš as the major players. The illuminated towers of the Church of Týn were seen by millions of viewers who watched the live broadcast of the American Academy Awards on Monday night, Blesk.cz reports. Claudia Stolze, who was one of the nominees for the Best Makeup and Hairstyling award for the film adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel Emma, spoke live from the terrace of a hotel in the center of Prague. Claudia Stolze, a makeup artist and wig maker of British-German descent, has worked on a number of major films and TV shows and has been living in the Czech capital for more than half a year. After the gifted artist received a nomination for the prestigious Oscar award, it was necessary to ensure that Stolze could make a speech on the air during the ceremony. The Crisis Headquarters of the Czech Senate has decided to reopen the magnificent Wallenstein garden to the general public. The garden is open daily from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. Visitors were reminded of the need to comply with all current quarantine regulations, including wearing a face mask regime and keep the social distance. Built together with the palace in 1623 – 1630 the garden is one of the finest examples of the early Baroque in Prague. This strictly geometrically designed garden was created in parallel with the construction of the Palace. At first sight, one’s eyes are drawn to the massive sala pavilion, which at the time of its construction was unprecedented, and an artificial cave with stalactites (grotto). A part of the garden is reserved for an artificial pond with an islet, which was used for boat rides. On the islet, there is a copy of a marble fountain with statues of Hercules and the Nayades by Adriaen de Vries. The incident was reported just several hours before Minister of the Interior Jan Hamacek was expected to announce changes in the Cabinet, presenting a replacement for Deputy Foreign Minister Jakub Kulhanek, who became foreign minister last week. “Due to an anonymous bomb threat, we are currently evacuating the building of the Ministry of the Interior in Letná. Security measures are being implemented”, an official statement, published on Twitter, said. According to reports, the interior minister is set to address the incident, delivering a statement to the press at midday local time. So far, there have not been reports about any injuries or damage, and it is unclear whether the threat was real or a false alarm. This “internal” architecture of Prague’s centre is a fascinating display of wonderful works by famous designers and it has a great impact on Prague’s unique appearance. Prague’s passages were mostly emerging at the end of 19th century, mainly in the city’s centre. 1) LUCERNA, ROKOKO AND U NOVÁKŮ These three passages that are just a few steps off busy Vodičkova Street have turned the entire block into Emmental. Organizers of the Prague Pride Festival will obtain a grant of CZK 650,000 from the capital, Pražský Patriot reports. Proposed by Zdeněk Hřib (Pirates), mayor of the city, the grant was approved by Prague representatives at a Thursday meeting. The prospect of supporting the festival was discussed in March, but representatives did not decide on the matter back then. „The grant is not intended for the source itself, but for a weekly educational program. From my point of view of the price-performance ratio, this is a matter that will definitely pay off for the city. This is an event that will attract a lot of tourists to Prague, so I daresay that it deserves support,” Hřib said. Mayor added that the grant commission had endorsed the support for the Prague Pride Festival as well. The city allocated money for the event as a part of the distribution of grants intended for tourism. A long time ago, there were regular public religious events in Prague, but the few that reached the 20th century ended in the communist era. Every year on the evening of May 15, Prague hosts a traditional baroque water festival. For more than three hundred years, Prague and international visitors have celebrated and commemorated St. John on this day. Between Charles Bridge, from which Prague’s beloved patron saint was once thrown, and Manes Bridge you can admire lovingly decorated gondolas, authentic dragon boats and colorful ships. This is but a shortlist of steps through which Prague Airport pursues sustainability and green urbanism. The long-term development projects embedded in the airport’s agenda are to adhere to the principles of sustainability, too. Prague Airport has been actively reducing CO2 emissions for over ten years. Compared to 2009, it achieved a reduction in CO2 emissions of 76% last year and thus saved the equivalent of 41,000 tons of CO2. At the same time, together with other airports, airlines and aircraft manufacturers, the airport has committed itself to reduce the environmental impact of aviation in the pan-European Destination 2050 initiative and introduced a commitment to reach carbon neutrality on all flights across Europe and beyond by 2050. “Airlines are phasing out older aircraft and replacing them with new, much greener and more environmentally-friendly models. On April 19th, 2021, the almost twenty-hectare plain at Prague’s Dívčí hrady became the new home to Przewalski’s horses. The Prague Zoo staff transported the first four mares from the breeding station in Dolní Dobřejov. They will be joined by a stallion in due time. “The purpose of this project is not only to regenerate this historic site but also to use the wild horses to graze the grass, thus contributing to the return of the original communities of plants and animals,” said Miroslav Bobek, Prague Zoo’s director. “It is also important for us that Prague’s citizens will be able to see Przewalski’s horses at Dívčí hrady while we are rebuilding their stables and enclosures at the zoo.” The first inhabitants at Dívčí hrady are the mares Khamiina, Xicara, Lana and Gruhne (see below for more details). The Prague City Council has approved a proposal outlining the renovation and modernizing of the Smichov railway station and its immediate surrounding area. The plan was presented two years ago and has finally been given the green light to be put into action. The initial plan was to build in stages but the city has decided to complete the remodel all at once. Conceptual designs for the proposal have been released and the renovations would radically change the outdated, neglected, and crime-ridden state of the current train station. “The Smíchov terminal will be the first truly modern railway station in Prague. This is a unique project of a traffic hub, which we only know from abroad so far,” said Adam Scheinherr, Deputy Mayor of Prague in an interview with Czech Crunch. The new terminal would make travel more efficient as it would reduce transfers for passengers and connect railways, metro, trams, and buses as well as a park-and-ride car park with a thousand-vehicle capacity.
