Twenty-four new Stolpersteine (stumbling blocks) in memory of the Holocaust victims were laid last week in Prague.
Signal Festival in Holešovice for the first time. The festival of digital and creative culture will take place from Thursday, October 15th to Sunday, October 18th. The eighth year of Signal Festival will present 15 artistic installations to its visitors. As a novelty, a new festival route around Holešovice will add the popular routes through Karlín and the historical recesses of The Old Town. The umbrella theme of the festival is the hot issue of Plan B. The organizers, together with the visual artists, want to reflect on what they can do for Planet Earth and how to behave sustainably. Simultaneously, many artworks react to this year’s pandemic situation. This year will present some of the most outstanding Czech artists, such as Milena Dopitová, Jiří Černický or the designer duo Vrtiška & Žák, as well as renowned foreign studios. Thorough security and hygienic measures consulted with epidemiologists will be employed at all times. The festival year 2020 represents new challenges. The design show marked by a spirit of sustainability is taking place until September 6th, with 77 designers from the Czech Republic and abroad “going green” across two floors of a historic building in Naměsti Republiky. Visitors will experience a variety of design types, including painting, clothing, jewelry, wooden products, glass and paper products, and traditional crafts, along with innovative new design solutions. Projects this year include unique woodwork designs from Eva Pechova, Evista Design, and the Woodcock restoration studio, and production of special protective clothing against knife attack made from 100% degradable materials, named Time for Protection. In addition to the show itself, visitors can enjoy delicious refreshments at Elbi Coffee and a rich accompanying program of design workshops and lectures. Peres Jepchirchir smashed the women-only race world record in the half marathon in Prague this morning. The 26-year-old Kenyan clocked 1:05:34 at the Prague 21.1KM, shattering the previous record of 1:06:11 set by Netsanet Gudeta of Ethiopia at the World Half Marathon Championships in 2018. Breaking away from the small field just 20 minutes into the race, Jepchirchir set out on a ravaging pace over the 16.5-lap course in Prague’s Letna Park, passing 10 kilometres in 30:32. She slowed over the waning laps but still finished well under the previous mark. “I thank God… I’m so excited… I’m satisfied with the result although I thought I could have run 64:50, but I thank God for what He has given me,” the pious Jepchirchir said after the race. She noted that it was difficult running alone after she dropped the pack and pacemakers. “It was difficult to run alone. If I could have had (good) pacemakers, I could have run 64.” This is Jepchirchir’s second world record over the distance. Are you a history lover? At Prague Airport you can visit the 75th-anniversary exhibition of the return of Czechoslovak pilots serving in RAF. The exhibition Konečně doma! Finally home! is located in the corridor between terminals until the end of November and is open to the public and passengers. The exhibition recalls the arrival of the soldiers on 13 August 1945 and subsequent parades, which took place on August 21, 1945, on Old Town Square in Prague. Almost as soon as Germany invaded and occupied former Czechoslovakia in 1939, many members of the Czechoslovak military risked death or harsh imprisonment by attempting to leave their homeland and offer their military services to nations that had taken up arms against Germany. Roughly 2,500 Czech airmen joined the ranks of the Royal Air Force. They served with distinction from the pivotal Battle of Britain in 1940 to the end of hostilities in 1945. While some remained in Great Britain after the war and continued their RAF careers, others returned to Czechoslovakia where a cruel twist of irony awaited them. Kateřina and Tereza, food lovers who run the successful Instagram channel kamvpraze, will share with us at Prague Morning a weekly food tip. We’ll discover together new openings in the city, hidden cafes, bistros, or well-renowned restaurants. This is a pretty new Asian restaurant in Kaprova street, near the Oldtown square. Hanzu is a “sister” of very famous Asian restaurant Sasazu Restaurant, which you all surely already know. During our visit, we tried five dishes since the portions are meant to be shared with others so they aren’t that big. So what did we get? We began with beef tataki, continued with sasa crispy roll with tuna and salmon and for the mains, we got vegetarian dim sum Har Gow dumplings and curry with tofu and jasmine rice. At the end, we could not resist and tried also coconut tiramisu, which was truly DELICIOUS. On the other hand, we were not that impressed by the sauce of beef tataki – it was a bit too sour for us. European Heritage Days will be held in the Czech Republic from 12 to 20 September. You will be able to visit hundreds of historical sites for free or for a reduced entrance fee. Every year, usually during the second weekend of September, the doors of the most interesting monuments, buildings, premises, and areas are opened to the public. About 400 state-protected buildings have joined the event (the number of participants continues to grow, usually it reaches 1000). The list includes castles, palaces, churches, monasteries, museums, theaters, old houses, gardens, but also industrial buildings: factories, mills, breweries, craft workshops, mines. From Tuesday, September 1, new emergency measures against the spread of coronavirus will come into force. Face masks will be again mandatory in medical and social facilities, offices, all means of public transport, railway stations and polling stations. Moreover, Czechs will have to put on the famous roušky at Prague Airport and at public events where there are more than 100 people. For now, restaurants, and workspaces are excluded from the measure, although regulations might still change in the coming weeks. “We continue to maintain the necessary exemptions from wearing the face masks for children up to two years of age, persons with severe autism spectrum disorders, persons in a closed vehicle (if all members are from a common households) and public transport drivers who are alone in a closed cabin separate from the passenger compartment,” said the Chief Hygienist of the Czech Republic Jarmila Rážová. The government has also cut the minimum quarantine requirement to 10 days since meeting an infected person from 14 days. If you are not planning to visit Slovakia during your traveling through Europe, you may at least taste something typical Slovak – Halušky s bryndzou. Restaurant “U Skřetů” can be easily missed when you walk by it, but once you locate the entrance (on the picture above it is the small door on the left) and brave the steep spiral staircase down to the cellar, you will have a chance to dine as if you were in Bratislava in Slovakia. Halušky are perfectly accompanied by beer and here again, you will have a choice of beer produced in Slovakia. And you will see that, even though Slovakia is better known for its wine, they can make a decent beer as well. One curiosity about this restaurant is also the fact that you can ask for the menu in Esperanto, and if you are lucky you can meet also some people speaking that language since the local Esperanto club is sometimes meeting right here. Some 90 ancient Egyptian artifacts will be on display for six months at the Prague National Museum in an exhibition titled “Kings of the Sun” as of the end of August. The artifacts were found during a Czech archaeological mission at the Abusir site, near Giza. There are treasures from the 3rd to the 1st millennium BC, such as the unique royal statue of King Raneferef, one of the four pharaohs buried in Abusir, or an extensive collection of statues from the tombs of Princess Sheretnebty and the scribe Nefer. The news of their discovery traveled the world in 2012. In a press statement on Friday, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Moustafa Waziri said that the exhibition would put on show around 90 ancient pieces unearthed by the Czech mission that was working in the “Abu Sir” archaeological area. “The artifacts include a bust of King Neferefre and a collection of statues from the Old Kingdom of Egypt,” he added.
