Karlovo náměstí is currently under reconstruction and should turn into a more pleasant place for pedestrians by the end of the summer.
The replica of the Marian column at Old Town Square is not the only Hapsburg era monument that may be restored. Plans to revitalize Malostranské náměstí call for the statue of Field Marshall Radecký to be returned to the square but there is some opposition to that idea as well. Marshall Wenceslas Count Radecký of Radeč (1766-1858) was a soldier of Czech origin who led many victorious campaigns in the service of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, known for the victories at the Battles of Custoza (1848) and Novara (1849) during the First Italian War of Independence. The brothers E. and J. Max were designers of the monument, cast from captured Italian guns, and solemnly unveiled in 1858, i.e. after Josef’s death, in the lower part of Malostranské Square. Prague 1 councilors supported the intention to return the monument to Malostranské náměstí and the proposal has previously been endorsed by the Commission for Culture. “Before the complete reconstruction of Malostranské náměstí, an archaeological survey will be carried out so that the erection of the monument can be incorporated into the new plan. The overall transformation of the square should begin later this year,” said Prague 1 Town Hall in a Facebook post....

“Architecture for everyone” is the motto of Open House Prague this year, which invites visitors to see buildings and spaces that aren’t usually accessible in 10 city districts. “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year we will meet our visitors on a new date, in September. To our delight, many of our partners who we had originally agreed with have decided to participate again,” says festival director Andrea Šenkyříková. Open House Prague festival will take place from September 1 to September 6, 2020. During the weekend of that week, visitors will be able to take a look around 73 usually inaccessible buildings and spaces, and starting on September 1, the weekdays will offer a supporting program consisting of guided walks, lectures, and debates on city architecture. The festival of open buildings is now a traditional architecture holiday that allows people to explore the hidden treasures of the city for free and enjoy the unique atmosphere of communality and excitement from exploring places. Beautiful views over Prague will be available from terraces and roofs, and visitors will also get to explore ancient undergrounds. The weekend program will be accompanied by supporting events on weekdays, which will provide visitors with more information...

A record number of festival venues, more than one hundred Pride events in Prague and the regions, five hours of online broadcasts daily, rainbow-lit buildings throughout the Czech Republic. The jubilee tenth edition of the Prague Pride festival will take place from 3 to 9 August and, for the first time in its history, will bring together LGBT+ people and others through the interactive online Pride Stream. Theme of the festival: Pride LIVE “Prague Pride connects us LIVE”: this is the main motto of this year’s campaign and the goal of the festival itself. “We wanted to emphasise the theme of interconnection, which is very important to us. We have to get to know each other as LGBT+ people because, for example, the fact that I am a lesbian does not mean that I understand trans people. However, we don’t want to stick only with LGBT+ people, but also communicate with the people around us. The tenth Prague Pride simply has the aim of uniting the whole Czech Republic,” says festival director Hana Kulhánková. The organising team would like to attract to the programme as many people as possible from all over the country – from LGBT+ individuals and organisations, through the...

The ongoing ramifications of the coronavirus have forced the cancellation of the 2020 Prague Half Marathon and Marathon this autumn but mass participation road races are beginning to return to the Czech calendar albeit on a small scale for the time being. Runners flowed into the check-in, showed their passports, got their start numbers, passed the security and boarded through the gate D6. Then the airport shuttle busses took them to the runway, but instead of entering the plane, they lined up at the start of a 5km Runway Run. 2,674 runners were lucky enough to secure their places in this sold-out once-in-a-lifetime event. They were split into different categories to abide by the public and health safety regulations. Categories included an astonishing Sunset Run on Saturday evening, or a sunny Breakfast Run on Sunday morning, with many of them joining 3km dm Family Run distance. Basically, runners were running with planes taking-off or landing over their heads. To spice up the excitement, RunCzech and the Czech Athletic Federation organized an Elite Run with a live broadcast on Czech National TV. Four Czech elite men and four women created mixed-gender relays in an exhibition race of 500-1000-500-1000 meters on the runway....
