Deputy Minister for Transport Adam Scheinherr (Praha sobě) denied that the annual pass for Prague City Transport will raise from the present CZK 3,600 to CZK 5,500, the news site E15 reported. The cost of parking would also go up. Scheinherr will suggest that the price would increase by CZK 1 per day, ie by CZK 365 per year. “In this way, passengers can cover the higher costs of the transport company in the following years,” Scheinherr says. “Only in ten years, the pass should become doubly expensive,” he added. “Last week, some politicians have chosen the most extreme option and scare Prague citizens. The annual pass won’t cost CZK 5,500 from 2021,” the deputy said. The price of an annual pass would thus increase by CZK 365 year-on-year from the current CZK 3,650 – to CZK 4,015, starting from January 1, 2021. In just three months during the coronavirus crisis, Prague Transport Company lost CZK 500 million in fares and expects to collect up to CZK 1.7 billion less from passengers in the whole year. On the contrary, costs had been rising before the crisis, mainly because of the drivers’ salaries. Prague City decided to reduce the annual pass...

Kramář Villa is open to the public on Saturday, as part of a series of government building “Open Day” events. Built between 1911 and 1914 by Karel Kramář, a politician and the future first Czechoslovak prime minister, the villa has over 700 m2 of floor space. Since 1998, this villa has been the official residence of the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic. Although it is difficult to categorize the architectural style of the villa, as Neo-Baroque features are complemented by typically Art Nouveau elements, it is considered one of the most striking examples of Prague villa design. It consisted of 56 rooms used for diverse purposes – including bedrooms, studies, dining and drawing rooms, guest suites, and even a bathhouse, on a total area of 700 square metres. Hot houses, a tennis court, and a park were built in its surroundings. The original interior of the villa was designed and executed in collaboration with such outstanding artists as J. Beneš, professor of the College of Applied Arts, and sculptor Celda Klouček. After the death of Karel and Nadezhda Kramář, the villa passed into the ownership of the Karel Kramář Society. At the end of the 1930s it was administered by the National...

According to the Minister of Health Adam Vojtěch, the compulsory use of facemasks on public transport may return from October or November. “In autumn, the normal seasonal flu could compound health risks stemming from the coronavirus pandemic. Additional tests will also be needed to exclude other diseases,” says Vojtech. “The incidence of the disease will determine whether we need to wear face masks again. We need to prevent the spread of infection when other respiratory viruses will circulate,” added Vojtěch. Currently, masks are mandatory only in the Prague metro and in public transport in the Moravian-Silesian and Jihlava regions. It should also be worn in inpatient facilities and nursing homes, as well as indoors at public events. The compulsory use of the face mask was introduced by the Czech government on March 19, when citizens were “obliged to wear any form of respiratory protection in public places, including in the open air”. The Czech Republic had 13,238 confirmed cases of coronavirus infection by Tuesday morning, with 64 new infections on Monday. So far 8,373 people have recovered and 353 people have died. Although the virus is still circulating in Prague, the capital city has only seen a residual amount of...
The current logo of the City of Prague, ie a red box with four language versions of the word “Praha”, is already twenty years old and authorities are slowly beginning to talk about a new modern variant. The KONTRA Studio came up with the first unofficial design. “We wanted to show what we can do and give Prague a kind of gift after the pandemic. We think that it is time for the city to emerge in a nicer way, with a new visual identity,” says the founder of the Kontra studio, Adam Ondráček. “The current logo is just a square with text. We are working to create a logo with a heart to symbolize Prague as the heart of Europe, and also with the coat of arms, which refers to the royal city,” says Markéta Steiner, graphic designer from KONTRA. The current logo was created twenty years ago by designer Aleš Najbrt. His work is often described as “timeless”, but the city is still looking around for a new brand identity. The Prague representative Martin Benda (Praha sobě) stated that “the current logo brings with it certain disadvantages and complications. For example, the relationship between the logo and the...
