There are three main food delivery players in Prague; Dáme jídlo, Wolt, and UberEats. I hadn’t tried any of these services before the restaurants closed – now I’ve tried all three. So which delivery service is best? Wolt My first app download was Wolt. I chose Wolt because they seemed to deliver from several quality restaurants that I liked to visit when open – wasn’t just focussed on existing takeaways. It was pretty easy to set up my details – the app was in English and I liked that I could use Apple Pay so I didn’t have to enter my credit card details again. My first order experience was perfect. The menu was automatically translated and I was able to add items to the cart, add a tip (you can revoke later if needed), checkout and immediately see the progress of my order. The progress was updated until it showed that my order had been collected. I could see the progress of the courier on a map and delivery time, so I was at the door just as they arrived. By Mandy Archer—Anglo American University Three new paintings, along with twenty-five other works (paintings, film & video) from the Belgian artist Michaël Borremans are being exhibited for the first time at the Galerie Rudolfinum. While this exhibition, titled The Duck, has been closed due to COVID-19, artwork from The Duck and interviews with Borremans can still be viewed on the gallery’s website. The Duck began with a video and a film, bringing visitors onto Borremans’ stage as if he sets up the actors on the screen. There were two videos positioned on the left-side wall and one large vintage film projector at the entrance. The two “paintings” on the left were Borremans’ figures that moved like “moving pictures.” The larger projected image showed a black and white film of three men with blurred faces sitting in chairs each slightly apart from each other. This loops for one minute, with no movement from the men and only a change of lighting. Nothing is static in the almost empty room as the figures move within the frame and alert the viewer to Borremans’ affection for cinema, daring us to forget where we are and tune in to the moving images. Bolt, formerly known as Taxify, tucks into food-delivery market and started its new service in Prague. At the moment, you can find brands and restaurants such as KFC, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Burrito Loco, Lasagneria, YOLO Karlin, Kolkovna, Potrefena Husa, PokeHaus, TGI Fridays, and many others. In the coming weeks, several hundred other businesses will be added, said the company in a press release. Delivery within four kilometers will be free of charge as part of the initial promotional offer. “Bolt has hundreds of thousands of satisfied users in the Czech Republic. Through Bolt Food they will be able to order food from their favorite restaurant and support the businesses during these trying times,” says Roman Sysel, Bolt’s regional manager for Central Europe. Prague authorities will use the coronavirus crisis to get a firmer grip on short-term rentals like Airbnb. Using state of emergency powers in place during the coronavirus pandemic, the Czech parliament’s lower chamber fast-tracked a plan allowing local authorities to better collect tax and other information on short-term lets. “We want to get more information from Airbnb owners about the capacity of their apartments, how they are being used and the fees they receive,” said Prague’s mayor Zdenek Hrib Landlords will now have to provide information on the location of a property rented through platforms like Airbnb, how often a flat was rented, the total payment received and identify the online service used to connect the owner with the client. Airbnb listed nearly 12,000 properties in Prague last year, according to Prague’s development institute IPR. The district encompassing the city center has lost nearly half its residents. Registered voters totaled 21,556 in 2017 from 36,862 in 1990. According to Deloitte study, only around 20 percent of flats rented via shared accommodation platforms involve a paying visitor actually staying with the owner. Prague City Hall intends to allow retailers to display and sell their products, directly from sidewalks immediately outside of their shop fronts free of charge.
If you’re worried about touching the walk button at signalized pedestrian crossings, worry no more – at least in high-use areas. This means pedestrians do not need to press the button when wanting to cross the road. Council will continue to review locations with high pedestrian activity and will assess their suitability to receive automatic pedestrian signals. A spokesman for the city said that the pushbuttons cannot be switched off automatically, but need to be programmed individually by engineers, which is why this is being rolled out neighborhood by neighborhood rather than citywide all at once. These intervals vary from location to location, depending on the frequency of public transports and pedestrians. Other cities have already begun automating pedestrian signals in response to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Prague Police are looking for additional victims of a 26-years-old taxi driver accused of raping at least three women since January 2020, after they hailed a ride home, authorities said. According to the police, he chose drunken women and took them to remote places. There, he forcefully sexually assaulted the women. “They were, by virtue of their drunkenness, particularly vulnerable. Their incapacity made them no less deserving than anyone else of being safe. They each sought the security and safety they were entitled to expect from a Prague taxi,” said Jan Daněk, spokesman for the Prague police. Police officers have caught the man who is actually in custody for rape. He can face up to ten years in jail. Officers believe the man may have preyed on more women and urged potential victims to come forward. “We believe that these three cases now under investigation may not be the only ones and there are more victims,” added Jan Daněk. A Czech policeman slapped one girl during a “social distance” control of a young group of people in Řepy, Prague 17. The news is reported by iRozhlas. “Our officer behaved unprofessionally and in violation of the law and he’s is under investigation,” Prague Municipal Police spokeswoman Irena Seifertová said. “We immediately forwarded the video to the City Police Inspectorate of the City of Prague. Although we do not yet know exactly what happened on the spot, it is already evident that our officer behaved unprofessionally.
