These green jewels lie in the maze of the small Lesser Town streets, hidden behind the façades of palaces. The Vrtba (Vrtbovská), Ledebour (Ledeburská), Fürstenberg (Fürstenberská) and Kolovrat (Kolovratská) Gardens are considered to be some of Prague’s Baroque pearls. They each add a unique “relaxation zone” to the palaces bearing the same names. It is interesting to note that their terrace structure came about through necessity. There was very limited space below Prague Castle, which served as the royal residence, and the terrain was so steep that the garden designers had no other choice. The park located on Petřín Hill is very popular. During the winter months you will see bobsledders and on May Day young lovers make a point of visiting the statue of the Czech romantic poet Karel Hynek Mácha. There are also two picnic areas and a children’s playground. The Kinský Garden with its attractive summer palace often does not receive the attention it deserves. On April 6 the 21st edition of the Sportisimo Prague Half Marathon, an IAAF Gold Label Road Race, will feature the strongest field of professional runners and the largest field of amateur entrants in its storied history. When the Prague half marathon started on March 13, 1999, it probably seemed unlikely to anyone other than Carlo Capalbo, the President of the RunCzech organizing committee, that the race would grow into an event that would attract thousands of runners from all over the world and produce World Record performances. The race starts at 10 am CET from Jan Palach Square and will be broadcast live and is expected to last three hours. The fastest runners are expected to finish in an hour and a half. The capacity of the 20th Sportisimo Prague Half Marathon has been filled since the end of January. CENTRAL GROUP company announced an open call for participation in a workshop for the residence complex New Žižkov Centre. The aim of the announcer is to create a residential complex of approximately 1,200-1,300 dwellings with variable commercial spaces in the parterre in the streets of Olšanská and Jan Želivský and further, according to the concluded contract with Prague 3, the establishment of kindergarten, which subsequently the investor free of charge transfers into the ownership of the city district. The Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) will install terminals for payment of the ticket by card in all its buses. On Friday the company started installing terminals in trams where they had not yet been. They will start working by the end of April. A selection procedure shall be issued for the operation of terminals on DPP buses. The card can now be used in Prague in trams on lines 18 and 22. “We want to introduce contactless payment into all DPP buses. I assume that we will announce a contract for this service this year,” said Petr Witowski, CEO of the company. At the end of last year, the company introduced a non-cash payment of the fare on suburban bus lines it operates. By the end of April, all the trams will be equipped with payment terminals. Contactless payment will be possible at the middle door. On tram models 14T, known colloquially as Porsche, there will be two devices since the tram does not have a middle door. On Sunday, March 31, 2019, the summer schedule comes into effect at Václav Havel Airport Prague. For the duration of the season, a total of 69 airlines will be operating regular scheduled direct flights from Prague, heading to 162 destinations in 54 countries. There will also be direct flights to 16 long-haul destinations, which is the largest number in the airport’s modern history. “As part of the summer timetable, a total of four new airlines will be launching services from Václav Havel Airport Prague, two of them on long-haul routes. This proves our long-term success in motivating an ever-increasing number of airlines to open new routes from Prague, which ultimately means a wider choice of flights for our passengers,” says Vaclav Rehor, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Prague Airport. In comparison with the previous summer season, the total number of airlines running direct flights from Prague this summer will increase by two. The Prague Transport Company (DPP) is preparing another extension of the mobile signal in the metro. Another two dozen stations should be covered at the beginning of next year. Now people are able to call or connect to the Internet between Museum and Roztyly on line C and between Dejvicka and Motol Hospital on line A. The metro is due to be completely covered with mobile signal until 2022. According to the implementation schedule, these stations will be put into trial operation during the first quarter of 2020. In the spring of next year, it will be possible to surf the Internet in 28 stations and related metro tunnels,” said DPP spokesperson Aneta Řehková. The pilot operation has been on metro line C between Museum and Roztyly since last year. “The trial operation is still in progress and so far there have been no problems that would prevent the planned approval”. The Ikea furniture point in the center of Prague will close after a year. “Ikea Point will be open to customers till the end of August 2019,” the operator said. The so-called Ikea Point was the first attempt of the Swedish company for an unusual selling format in the Czech Republic. It opened in September 2018 as part of a trial to bring the Ikea home furnishing range and expertise closer to more customers. “Within a year, the concept will change and if it meets the goals, we may change the location,” said project manager Petr Tichý during the opening of Ikea Point. About two dozens of Czech and foreign artists decorated the famous Lennon Wall with new pictures and inscriptions of “love and peace”. John Lennon’s wall in Prague is a popular destination for tourists and a symbolic site of Czech opposition to the communist regime Since the 1980s, it has been filled with John Lennon-inspired graffiti and pieces of lyrics from Beatles’ songs. In the past years, it has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Prague and was seen as a symbol of global ideas such as “love and peace”. The leading figure behind the project was Pavel Šťastný, the man who created the famous logo of the Civic Forum during the Velvet Revolution. “For 60 years already, Lennon’s wall is a symbol of freedom in the Czech Republic. Beer, beer, beer…I know many pubs serve a nice beer. But there are only a few pubs in Prague that specialize in offering a wide variety of local Czech beers, all on tap, not only in bottles, and one of them is Kulový Blesk. In pubs like it, just to explain, they offer around 10 to 20 beers on tap, usually from different small- or micro-breweries, often more types of beer from one brewery. In such a pub the beers are always of the best quality and the choice changes every day. My humble opinion on the quality is developed by my several years of experience with beer. Kulovy blesk is not on the nicest spot, because it is blocked with the ‘Prague highway’ Sokolska. It offers a nice underground space decorated with posters of famous Czech movies. Actually, the name of the pub refers to the popular movie ‘Kulovy blesk‘ directed by Ladislav Smoljak and Zdenek Sverak. Unlike Vyšehrad and its impressive fortification, which is on almost every tourist’s to-do list, Bastion is a gem hidden not only from Prague’s first-time visitors but also from many locals. Originally built during the times of Charles IV, the wall created a defense perimeter in order to protect the medieval city from any threat that loomed outside. Once it lost its purpose, Bastion, which lies at the opposing end of Nuselský bridge from Vyšehrad and can be accessed via Horská st. or down from Folimanka park, has been neglected for generations. Recently, however, Prague commissioned a revitalization of the former fortification, tearing down the leftovers from the derelict 19th-century building, erecting a new structure which currently serves as a rather fancy restaurant, and turning the rest of the fortification into a park with benches. In my opinion, Bastion serves as a great example of how to elegantly revamp and utilize public spaces in a city. A tasteful combination of corroded steel, stone bricks, and a green lawn blend perfectly, subtly incorporating the park into its local surroundings. Praguers are complaining about the beer bikes, special vehicles driving through the historical centre with tapped beer served aboard up to 15 people who are “cycling,” and the City Hall is considering banning this. According to Jan Wolf of City Council, “at the moment, one of the possible solutions seems to me to ban this mode of operation in places where there is a ban on alcohol consumption in public areas. This solution would be accompanied by a simple enforcement by the Municipal Police”. Now Prague 1 has support from Prague City Hall and it has also responded positively to a proposal to deal with “visual smog” as Prague 1 calls the various Disneyland characters wandering around Old Town Square. St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated for the entire weekend in Prague. This is because every year, more and more expats & locals are loving and supporting the traditional celebrations that make up St. Patrick’s day. As with other notable structures around the world celebrating this holiday, the Petřín Viewing Tower, also known as the Little Eiffel Tower, will be lit in green on the holiday. Petřín’s new illumination for these events has been approved by city councilors, and could open the doors for the tower to sport some more colors in the future.
