Prague police officers were mainly stationed in the historical center during the last prolonged weekend. Drunken visitors on the beer bike were fined due to violating the ban on drinking alcohol at selected locations. There was a total of 11 misdemeanors within three days. “On-site patrols imposed block fines totaling CZK 3,400,” Irena Seifertova, spokesman for the city police said. Prague prohibits alcohol consumption in some streets, including the vicinity of schools, parks, state institutions and public stops. Tourists complained to the police officers that no one had told them about the rules and violations. The beer bike company, however, refuted the tourists’ statement. “We respect all decrees and regulations. Our bartender informed the clients while driving and pointed them to places where alcohol is not allowed,” said Viktor Hübner, Prague-beer-bike executive, whose clients also received the fine. He added that in some places, conflicting situations might arise. In the future, the city police are planning additional random checks to beer-bike customers. In selected pedestrian zones, the road office will start installing signs where biking is banned between 10:00 and 17:00 in the upcoming days. This will mostly be in place in areas around Wenceslas Square, Náměstí Republiky, and Old Town Square. Auto*Mat, an association that oversees policies and efficient use of public money, already said that the banning placements will begin on Tuesday. This data, however, has not been confirmed by the City Hall. Individuals, associations, companies, and other city institutions are also fighting against this decision to limit biking in town. According to the City Hall, the Court still has to decide on the proposal for the complete abolition of the biking restrictions. However, the verdict does not necessarily have to wait, as the dismissal of the precautionary measure is sufficient enough. Even though the restrictions were mainly directed against the so-called motor scooters in the center of the metropolis, the ban measure still explicitly noted the danger of cyclists to pedestrians. Prague has taken a significant step in building its smart city infrastructure with the installation of air quality sensors which gather real-time data through its ICE Gateway network. They are being provided by Finnish company Vaisala, which develops and manufactures a range of products for environmental and industrial measurement. The CO2 sensors will help the city to understand the local air quality conditions and to target actions in order to improve air quality. The sensors will be installed on the smart streetlights which are also used for traffic monitoring, security and other applications. ICE Gateway, based in Berlin, enables cities to provide smart solutions by upgrading their existing infrastructure and adding new functions and services that improve the life of their citizens. “Vaisala’s high-quality sensors, as well as their worldwide leading position and expertise in weather sensors, is a perfect match to our highly secure smart city plug-and-play solution,” said says Ramin L. On Tuesday, June 26, the Czech government approved the amendments to the law on railway transport, which allow the use of trains without drivers. The construction of a new fourth metro line in Prague, which will be marked by “D” letter and blue color, will begin by the section from Pankrác to the Olbrachtova station and it should cost 39.7 billion crowns. The first section will also test the operation in automatic mode – without drivers, which will speed up the putting line D to operation. Construction will be preceded by an archaeological survey which is set to begin this summer and is expected to take about a year. Construction works on the line will be launched at Pankrác station, outside the Arkády shopping mall. This is where the tunnel boring machines will be brought under the ground. Construction of the Metro’s D route was originally supposed to start in 2010, but it was postponed due to various reasons, including problems with acquiring all of the land. According to previously released plans, it should be completed by the year 2022 or 2023. The completion of the metro D construction will also mean a significant improvement of the environment. A recent report by Arthur D. Little found cities still need to work intensively on improvements to their mobility systems. The report assessed the mobility maturity, innovativeness, and performances of 100 cities worldwide through 27 criteria. The global average score of the 100 cities surveyed is 42.3 out of a possible 100 points. This means that, worldwide, the average city has unleashed less than half of the potential of its urban mobility system, a state of affairs that could be remedied by applying best practices across all its operations. Only 10 cities scored more than 50 points, of which eight are European cities and two Asian. The city-state of Singapore achieved the highest score with 59.3 points, followed by Stockholm (57.1 points), Amsterdam (56.7 points), Copenhagen (54.6 points) and Hong Kong (54.2 points). There has been a large increase in the number of accidents involving pedestrians and trams. There were five accidents in May, a record for a 10 day period and also equal to what usually takes place for an entire year. The DPP is launching an awareness campaign to remind people that they have to watch out for trams. The situation is usually caused by a distracted pedestrian who is looking at a mobile phone or listening to music over headphones stepping in front of a tram. The tram driver has only a fraction of a second to react, and the tram often cannot stop in time due to the braking distance needed, according to Martin Doubek, head of the Technical Inspection Department of the Prague Public Transit Company (DPP). The American motorcycle brand Harley-Davidson is celebrating its 115th birthday, and there will be a large number of bikers coming to Prague from July 5 to 8. More than 60,000 motorcycles are expected to participate, with over 100,000 people coming to the city from 71 countries or territories. The main center of activities will be Výstaviště in Holešovice. “We had to choose a place with good infrastructure, accommodation capacity, suitable spaces and a strong motorcycle tradition, but we also wanted a place that would be extremely attractive and appealing,” Trevor Barton of Harley-Davidson International said, adding the company has a big event every five years. On Thursday, June 14, Prague, inaugurated the new observation tower Doubravka, created by the architect Martin Rajniš. It is located in the Čihadla forest park, near Černý Most. It is the first public observation tower in the capital since 1992, when the Žižkov transmitter was completed. The name of the observation tower was chosen by its designer Prof. Martin Rajniš with his team at Huť architecture; he has imprinted on it a distinctive and original structure dominated by three massive legs 98 steps will lead up to the top of the tower with its viewing platform 20 meters up. The hallmark of Huť architecture has been projected into the form of a triangular pyramid and into the material chosen. It is dominated by easily renewable but durable acacia wood (over 5.5 km of trunk-lengths), supplemented with elements made of oak, larch and steel. The main tower will reach up 23.5 metres thanks to the weather vane, the construction cost almost 3 million crowns. The tower will be open all year round, free of charge. A secret message has been found inside one of the statues of the Astronomical Clock. The clock on the front of Old Town Square has been undergoing repairs since January. Aside from the clock itself, the sculpted figures are being restored. One of the statues of the Apostles weighed more than the others. Czech hygienists warn against the popular fish pedicure. Fish pedicures are popular in Prague, but hygienists warn against them, according to a press release by Dana Mertová. Mertová is a spokesperson for the Hygienická stanice hlavního města Prahy (HSHMP), Prague’s hygienic station. Particularly popular among tourists, the treatment is offered around Prague’s city center. The treatment consists of soaking one’s feet and calves in an aquarium filled with a freshwater fish called garra rufa. Also known as doctor fish, the fish nibble at the top layer of the skin, supposedly having a healing effect. The fish do not have teeth, and is a “fun and quite a pleasant process,” according to the press release. Despite the experiences potential beneficial and pleasant effects, the HSHMP warns against the treatment. “’The risk of transmitting infection from either fish to humans or humans to humans (via water and fish) or possibly the water itself can not be ruled out.
