The Czech metropolis has succeeded in the global competition and occupied the 8th place in the ranking of the most popular congress destinations that the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) compiles every year. Prague has moved three positions up since 2016 and ranked among the world’s TOP 10 meeting destinations such as Barcelona, Paris, Vienna, London and Singapore. In 2017, according to the Czech Statistical Office, 4,127 conferences were held in Prague, representing a third of all the events that took place in the country. More than half a million delegates participated in the Prague conferences. The Prague Convention Bureau statistics, based on data collected from its member entities, show that Prague, in the long run, has had a stable ratio of international (49.2%) and local events (50.8%). In 2017, meeting delegates from abroad arrived to Prague most frequently from the USA, Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland and France. “Prague belongs among destinations very popular with pharmaceutical, industrial or business meetings. The Municipal Court in Prague annulled the decision by the Prague City Council to allow the revitalization of the lower part of Wenceslas Square, which included permission to build ramps into a private investor’s garage. The court sided with associations for the protection of cultural monuments. The Klub Za starou Prahu and the association Pankrácká filed suit against the decision by City Hall to reject their appeal against the revitalization of the square. The suit claimed the procedure used to reject the appeal was illegal. The dispute concerned the Culture Ministry’s role and specifically the intervention of then-Culture Minister Daniel Herman (KDU-ČSL), who reversed the ministry’s previous opposition to the garage ramp. American Airlines has brought the Czech Republic and the USA one step closer, launching direct service between Václav Havel Airport Prague and Philadelphia International Airport. Flights are operated using Boeing 767-300 aircraft, providing more than 2,800 seats per week between the two cities, every day throughout the summer season. Onboard, the business cabin offers 28 fully lie-flat, aisle accessible seats arranged in a one-two-one configuration, plus personal Samsung Galaxy tablets loaded with the latest movie releases, hit TV programs, games, music and best-selling book excerpts. American is the first airline to connect the Czech Republic and the state of Pennsylvania with a direct flight. Prague City Hall has launched a new website with ads for the rental and sale of real estate owned by the city. There are both residential and commercial properties. Gradually the site www.realitniportalpraha.cz will be replenished with new announcements. Users have already the opportunity to subscribe to an e-mail newsletter. “The real estate portal is a next step in the direction of making operations with urban real estate as transparent as possible. Protests by taxi drivers may not be over. The Association of Czech Taxi Drivers (SČT) is not pleased with the agreement signed between ride-sharing service Uber and the Czech government and is calling for taxi drivers to protest on Friday, May 4, in Čestlice, just south of Prague. The government, led by Andrej Babiš (ANO), signed the agreement with Uber on April 30. As previously determined, the agreement called for Uber to commit to getting a Czech business license to operate locally, rather than rely on a license from another EU country. Uber drivers will have to meet the conditions for a regular taxi driver, including a license and an exam. The signing of the agreement had been delayed over issues including deadlines. The Volkswagen Prague Marathon takes place May 6, starting at 9 am at Old Town Square. It will be the 24th edition of the race that has become the most important running event in the country. The Volkswagen Prague Marathon became the fastest May marathon of all time in 2010 thanks to Eliud Kiptanui’s race record of 2.05:39. The women’s race record of 2:21:57 has been held by Valary Aiyabei since last year. The Volkswagen Prague Marathon includes traditional side events, such as the Marathon Music Festival, Sports Expo Fair and the short family Minimarathon. It is exactly a tenth of the race, 4.2 km, and is intended for all who want to be part of the marathon but dare not go the whole marathon distance. Prague’s annual Million Marihuana March takes place Saturday, May 5, and starts at 12:30 pm at Karlovo náměstí. The march, which attracts thousands of people hand has several music trucks, will go through the city center and end up in Štvanice ostrov. There is a large program with live music, DJs and seminars on the island from 2:30 pm to 10 pm. The purpose behind the march is to encourage the legalization of marijuana for medical and recreational uses, and the draw attention to the what organizers call the absurdity of the current laws and the problems with prohibition. According to Mayor of Prague Adriana Krnáčová, a working group was established to draft a new law on construction. Experts agree with officials that the existing system of land use, planning and issuing permits for housing construction needs to be reviewed. Krnáčová claims that a long process of obtaining permits is one of the main reasons why currently there are not enough vacant apartments in Prague. A small volume of supply leads to a sharp increase in house prices. Currently, the builder has to get dozens of positive assessments from various institutions and building authorities. Experts called for Prague to have only one building office or at least a common methodology for the existing ones. The current system has 22 building authorities involved in issuing permits. In September 2017, the government approved basic concepts of the law, which was being elaborated by the Ministry of Regional Development. The situation looks grim for Libeňský most (Libeň Bridge). The Prague City Council supports demolishing the bridge down to its support pillars, which would be reused for a new bridge. The demolition must still be confirmed by 65-member Prague Assembly, which will discuss the issue April 26. The proposal for demolition was agreed to by seven of the 11 members of the City Council. Those from ANO and ČSSD supported the demolition. Members of the Three-Party Coalition (Greens, KDU-ČSL and STAN) opposed it. A long-delayed hotel project at Old Town Square that seemed to be canceled now looks like it is going to happen. Prague City Hall in December 2017 said it was terminating the contract with a company that plans to join eight buildings near Old Town Square, but it is now set to reverse its decision. The company Akroterion has rented four houses from the city since 1996 and owns four others. The planned five-star hotel with approximately100 rooms will be called U Sixtů, after one of the buildings, In addition to At the Sixth House, the project included houses called At the Stone Bird, At the Hungarian Crown, At the Unicorn, At the White Horse, At the Black Sun, At the Stone Lamb, and At the White Wolf. Yesterday evening Prague police arrested at the Terminal 1 the group of seven men, suspected of the Saturday attack at Quadrio. The attack took place at seven o’clock in the evening on Vladislavova Street, where seven men came and wanted to drink their alcohol. The waiter got into a conflict with the suspects after he brought to their attention that they were not permitted to consume alcohol they had brought with them into the garden [on the patio]. The group of seven men then attacked restaurant personnel and knocked one waiter down, where they beat him with fists and repeatedly kicked him. When the victim was lying on the ground unconscious, they fled from there onto tram number 14 and rode away in the direction of the Charles Square, the police spokesman recounted. The waiter ended up in the hospital in the intensive care unit in a very serious condition and had to undergo a head surgery.
