The Czech Republic and six other European Union member states on Tuesday are introducing a vaccination certificate system, ahead of the rollout of the program across the bloc on July 1. Czechs will be able to download certificates of negative Covid tests, previous infection, and vaccination from the webpage of the Institute of Health Information and Statistics (Ocko.UZIS.cz) The other countries are Bulgaria, Greece, Denmark, Germany, Croatia, and Poland, according to the European Commission. The new certificate will be available to people who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, have a recent negative test result, or have recovered from a coronavirus infection. How will citizens get the certificate? National authorities are in charge of issuing the certificate. The State Security Council has decided to suspend the operation of Belarusian airline Belavia in the Czech Republic. The last flight will be checked in on Wednesday, May 26. Minister of Transport Karel Havlíček (ANO) announced it on Wednesday following the forced landing of a Ryanair plane in Minsk to arrest the journalist Raman Pratasevich, a key foe of authoritarian Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. In a video posted online, the detained blogger, Roman Protasevich, 26, said he was in good health, being held in a pretrial detention facility in Minsk, and acknowledged having played a role in organising mass disturbances in the capital last year. The European Union agreed Monday to impose sanctions on Belarus, including banning its airlines from using the airspace and airports of the 27-nation bloc. “Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko must pay a bitter price for forcing a commercial flight to land in Belarus in order to detain a dissident journalist on board,” German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Tuesday. “What Lukashenko did could hardly be more perfidious. More than 170 passengers’ lives were endangered to detain a journalist,” Maas said at a news conference with his Czech counterpart Jakub Kulhánek (ČSSD). “We won’t tolerate that one...

The Covid passport, which will start operating at the European level from the middle of the year, should be available in the Czech Republic as early as June. Deputy Prime Minister Havlicek indicated that “as of June 1, it will be on the Internet basis, as of June 15, it will be within the application.” According to him, the Czechs are in the lead, and the application will be prepared to meet European standards, which will be valid only from July. According to MEP Kolaja, it will also be important for inspectors to be able to read the covid passport – not only for the Czech Republic but also for everyone who arrives in the country. That is until someone does not come with vaccination or a test, but ultimately they will be in danger of being quarantined because the data cannot be read during the examination. “When a Czech comes to Germany, he must be able to prove this with a certificate issued to him in the Czech Republic – and vice versa,” he said. Havlicek confirmed that the Czech authorities would be prepared for this. “When a German or an Italian comes to us, through something called application...

Czech rail infrastructure manager SŽ has selected the consortium Sudop Praha and Olomouc-based engineering consultancy Moravia Consult to undertake the feasibility study into the planned Prague – Hradec Králové – Wrocław high-speed line. The contract is worth CZK 12.6m with final reports due by November 2022. SŽ presented its overall plans for the new high-speed network in April. Planning for the new lines is taking place in three phases: the first strategic phase was undertaken between 2014 and 2018 and confirmed the need for and basic outline of the new routes. The current pre-investment phase, which will conclude around 2023, includes detailed feasibility studies. Once feasibility work is complete this will lead to outline planning approval enabling the final construction management planning to take place in 2023-25, leading to the issue of building permits for construction to begin from 2025 onwards. The proposed RS5 Praha – Hradec Králové – Wrocław line will branch from the planned RS1 Prague – Brno – Břeclav route serving the city of Hradec Králové with a branch to Pardubice on the existing Prague – Olomouc main line. The feasibility study will design the route of the future high-speed line and its connections, as well as assess...
Article published in cooperation with The Prague Review Start-up carrier PRAGUSA.ONE has announced plans to operate nonstop flights from both Dubrovnik and Prague to the US and Asia. The first flights from Dubrovnik to New York and Los Angeles are due to commence in late June 2021 – although tickets aren’t on sale yet. The company says that tickets will be on sale from May 24th and both routes are initially set to operate until the end of October 2021. Flights to New York will be on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, while services to LA will be on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. The website, currently just a simple holding page, shows ambitious route plans. You may think that the PRAGUSA name was inspired by plans for flights between Prague and the USA. Not so, the name is actually a portmanteau of the words ‘Prague’ and ‘Ragusa’ the old name for Dubrovnik. The company plans to order four Airbus A350-900 aircraft in a single-class configuration with 251 premium economy seats. The deliveries of these A350s would take place in 2024. Dubrovnik and Prague would each receive two of these A359s. Prior to delivery, they will wet-lease two Airbus A350-900 and two A330-330...
