Expats Next Door: Chelsea and Giuseppe from USA

Ezra’s Bagels is a comfortable and homey cafe located in Prague 7. Chelsea Phillips and Giuseppe Catanzariti have only owned the shop since October of this year. However, they’ve been selling bagels for over a year now through Facebook and online and the story of how it all started is quite a good one. Chelsea is originally from New York and Giuseppe from Boston. “He’s like an adopted New Yorker,” Chelsea said, “we got married in New York the last time we lived in America was in New York”. When Chelsea was pregnant with their son, Ezra, she was craving a bagel, “ I tried to find some all over Europe and I just could never find any,” Chelsea said, “so I asked a friend to bring a baker’s dozen (from the states) because I was just craving bagels, it was literally the only thing I was craving. And my friend forgot them on her counter next to her keys so I was super disappointed so Giuseppe said why don’t we just try to make bagels and I was like do you understand what a time process that is.” So Giuseppe said they should just try to make some themselves....

After two years living in the Czech Republic, Mohamed Hadi Nibou appreciates a lot about the country. Regarding Prague in particular, he wound up here on accident — a phenomenon he finds common among most foreigners — and stayed for all the marvels of life in the city.    What was your childhood like and how did you end up in Europe? Born and raised in Algeria, I can say my childhood was pretty amazing. I grew up in an African culture, which is quite different from European sensibilities. So yes, you can imagine me living in a tepee and, as a three-year-old child, playing outside fully naked (as my wife loves imagining me). Expat Next Door: Scott Kelly

In the heart of Prague lie restaurants Cali Brothers, Burrito Loco, Agave, and Bohemia Bagel. These establishments all have one thing in common, and it’s Scott Kelly and his partner Glenn Spicker. After interviewing Scott we got some insight into the inner workings of these establishments and how they came to be. Scott always knew he wanted to be a chef and went to culinary school in New York where he worked before relocating to Los Angeles. Originally from California, he set roots in Prague “over 20 years ago” when he was on a trip through Europe. “I didn’t move here, I was just traveling,” he said, also adding “I was probably traveling for a year and a half, and just came to visit and came back and found a job,” and the rest is history. “It just clicked, everything came together,” is his reply when asked why he moved to Prague. Aya Watanabe was born in Hokkaido, Japan, and started dancing at the age of four after seeing her very first ballet performance. She has performed on stages all over the world, including in Colombia, the USA, Japan, Germany, and other countries. In 2005, she joined the Roxey Ballet in New Jersey. Since 2009, she has been with the Czech National Ballet currently under the direction of Filip Barankiewicz, wherein in the 2015/16 season, she was named a demi-soloist and in the 2016/17 season a soloist. I applied to take a part in The Czech National Ballet’s public audition in 2009, after I received an invitation to attend I flew from New York where I was a freelancer. I first came to Prague in 1990 as part of a four-man team to fit out offices for a company called United Distillers. It was a nine-week contract, but to fulfill this we had to work seven days a week. Our only socializing in those early days was in the British embassy social club which operated on Friday nights, where I met many other expats that had moved to Prague, and it was through these contacts that I decided to stay and see if I could continue with building work. At that point in my life, I had graduated from university, I had worked for a year as a TV Producer for a nationally broadcasted ‘fashion emergency/wellness’ type of reality show, and I had worked in several feature films in the Production and Directing departments. While I was doing my research, I found some interesting film programs in Spain and France, and it was my dad who ran into Prague Film School’s website.
