Take a journey back to the history lane and taste traditional dishes based on recipes featured in a cookbook from 1905. You will have an opportunity to savor German, Austrian and Hungarian dishes that became the base for what we now call modern Czech cuisine. The feast is accompanied by local wines and beer, and live piano music from the times of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. “We wanted to create a feast where guests can taste many different dishes and don’t have to sit at the table all evening,” says Martin Bohacek, Executive Chef of Augustine Restaurant. “We wanted to keep the simplicity of the dishes originating in the times of Emperor Franz Joseph while also implementing modern processes and using only the best ingredients. I was inspired by a cookbook that I found at home after my ancestors. I wanted to go back to our roots and celebrate Czech history with the modern time feast for our local and international guests.” The buffet offers various delicacies such as goose liver pâté, venison tartar, wild boar ribs, tafelspitz, duck confit and much more, accompanied with bottomless local wine and beer. The all-you-can-eat buffet and beverages cost CZK 1390 per person,...
On the 14th of October, it will be exactly a year since the first day of the lockdown in the Czech Republic when we were all shut up in our own homes but the e-shop www.boxxi.cz opened along with its bricks and mortar store. It has been a challenging year, but Boxxi is not letting up on its mission to get excellent fish onto Czech dining tables. “Our main goal is to continue to offer first-class, quality fish, seafood, and other delicacies. I am convinced that it should make an appearance on Czech menus more often. That’s why we took it upon ourselves not only to import quality fish but we hit upon the idea of fish boxes (boxxi) so that everybody could have access to great products of the sea whenever the mood takes them,” says Marek Jirovec, the founder of the company. “The Boxxi.cz e-shop does not aim merely to sell fish but also to educate, teaching Czech consumers about good fish and how to recognize and prepare it. Neither do we neglect to place an emphasis on sustainability and choose our producers who approach the oceans with respect and behave towards them with consideration,” he adds. Boxxi...
Since traveling is still a bit uncertain because of COVID-19, you can go on a gastronomic expedition around Asia while still being in Prague. We have compiled – in cooperation with Storyous – a list of unique and inexpensive Asian restaurants that transport you away from Prague with their delicious, exciting food. We know how frustrating it is to be hungry, so we have chosen bistros where they serve food within ten minutes or so. Teplá Kačka Teplá Kačka is a street food mix of Chinese and Japanese specialties served by a team of Czech chefs. The kitchen is run by experienced chef Lucie Bártová, who exchanged a promising career in IT for culinary practice and later founded her own bistro, which she and her colleagues reconstructed with their own hands. Our favorites are their poke bowls and their famous dumplings with various fillings: duck with Chinese chives, crispy beef with lemongrass and shumai – open pork dumplings with shrimp or vegetarian coriander with lemongrass. If you can’t decide between all those goodies, there is a combo menu that allows you to get a taste of each one. Address: Šternberkova 19, Prague 7 Yoshihashi Sushi Come and taste Japanese...
Czech online grocery delivery startup Rohlik Group said on Thursday it will invest 400 million euros ($469.32 million) in warehouse automation by the end of 2025 to boost efficiency and capacity. The company, seeking to become Europe’s biggest online grocery delivery service, said in a statement it would invest 45 million euros in an initial phase, with further investments coming 2022-2025. Rohlik is installing a storage-bin system with integrated robot retrieval and order-picking work stations. It will launch at its German brand Knuspr.de in Munich and raise picking productivity threefold, the company said. That will be followed by a roll-out in existing and new European markets. Rohlik has said that it will expand to other German cities including Frankfurt this year followed by Hamburg, Cologne and others in 2022. The investment comes as Rohlik pushes into new markets after raising funds in financing rounds this year that helped it expand into Germany in August. It previously expanded into Austria and Hungary. In July, it raised 100 million euros from investors at a valuation of 1 billion euros after getting financing of 190 million euros in an earlier round. Founded in 2014 by 38-year-old Czech internet entrepreneur Tomáš Čupr, Rohlik posted turnover of...
Most shoppers in the Czech Republic prefer to buy Czech food in supermarkets, a new survey by Nielsen Admosphere has revealed. The study also found that 97% of respondents visit supermarkets for food at least sometimes, while 64% shop in small and brick-and-mortar stores, 31% at farmers’ markets, 26% at market stalls, 21% in specialized shops such as organic shops and 17% online. The research also revealed that 41% of respondents expressed interest in the country of origin for almost all products. In comparison, 44% cared about it only for selected products, and 15% did not care about it. The study also found that 70% of shoppers were willing to pay extra if they had the option to buy a product from their preferred country of origin. Products from the Czech Republic ranked first among Czech consumers in terms of product origin, followed by Germany and Slovakia. Poland emerged as the least popular producer country for Czechs, with only 4% of respondents saying they preferred Polish products. Inflation Elsewhere, CSO data has revealed that prices rose in almost all sections...
Penny Market and Billa have both announced plans to launch online grocery stores. Penny, the German supermarket chain, plans on launching their e-shop in the coming weeks, while Billa, an Austrian chain, has plans for a launch in 2022. In the coming weeks, most likely in mid-October, the Penny Market supermarket chain will launch its own online shop, so far, only in pilot operation in Pilsen. Depending on the interest of customers, the grocery giant will decide how fast and where exactly to extend the new service. The Billa retail chain is celebrating 30 years on the Czech market this year and it wants to continue expanding and digitizing its stores. The company plans to start selling groceries and household products online next year. It will offer customers a selection of up to 15,000 products and the option of delivery directly to their home or picking the order up at one of the 240 stores around the country. “By entering the online market, we are simply just responding to the demand created by Czech customers. We will not introduce the service until 2022 so that we can prepare the online shop to run as smoothly and precisely as possible,” says...
Prague is home to a vibrant food scene with restaurants that serve cuisine from all over the globe. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been scouring the best Thai cuisine in the city, part of Thai Select network. Prague’s burgeoning food scene has seen the emergence of some top-quality Asian restaurants recently. Lemon leaf is no exception. Located in the centre of Prague, this Thai restaurant delivers on quality and is unusual for Prague heat. With its pleasant interior, attentive staff and buzzing atmosphere, Lemon Leaf is popular with tourists, expats, and locals so reservations are advisable. The great value menu at lunchtime (like many Prague eateries), the weekly special main dish is normally particularly good, as is the superb Tom Yam soup. Moreover, the sheer size actually enhances the intimacy of Lemon Leaf’s ambiance, making you feel as though you’re the only one there, even when the restaurant is full. The large vibrant photography on the light yellow walls is just one satisfying touch of style. The staff is as hospitable as they come. Why you should visit it The restaurant is spacious and airy with a relaxed vibe. The prices are reasonable and the quality of the curries in...
The first Prague pub run by Matuška family will be built on the ground floor of the newly reconstructed Dejvická municipal building. The administration of Prague 6 has completely renovated the building and chose its ground floor’s next tenant through a tender. “The new tenant offered the highest price for rent, which was the only evaluation criterion. At the same time, it is a very interesting concept of a restaurant. Although not new in Prague 6, the new establishment will definitely help expand the existing offer of gastronomic services in the area,” said Jan Lacina, Deputy Mayor of Prague 6 (STAN). The house, which has been in a state of disrepair for several years and has undergone a big-scale general reconstruction in recent months, is located at the intersection of Dejvická and Bubenečská streets near the Hradčanská metro station. From the very beginning, the city district reckoned that the ground floor of the house would be intended for a restaurant-type establishment. “The general repairs have been completed and the space is ready for further renovations. Only special facilities for cooking have to be installed, but other than that, the tenants will then change the spaces intended for customers according to...
The average Czech throws away about 40 kilograms of food a year. People in housing estates waste the most food, while in rural areas, waste is less, which is related, among other things, to the fact that in these localities there is a better possibility of composting or feeding animals. To avoid such waste, for example, people could start offering food to charities. And that is exactly what three Prague canteens are trying to do. In their attempts, one hundred portions of food have been donated to local shelters. Up to 25 kilograms of food are thrown daily in each Czech canteen. “This number equals to around 30 to 50 portions, maybe around two to five percent of the total amount during daily operation,” said Anna Strejcová, director of Zachraň Jidlo, an organization that strives to reduce food waste. “We should aim to donate around 100 meals to five different charities,” said Denisa Rybářová, marketing manager. “We are, of course, very happy doing this and will certainly be appreciative of any other similar opportunities coming our way in the future,” said Stanislav Fiala, the director of Azylový dům svaté Terezie, a social services organization providing shelter to those in need....
