Countless performers would normally be playing the concert halls and arenas of the Czech Republic this week but as we all know, things are far from normal. However, as the old saying goes, “adversity breeds creativity”! Completely hygienic and in total compliance with the new regulations, a series of online concerts will be broadcast for music lovers to enjoy in their own homes. The current state of emergency has highlighted the amazing work that the emergency services are doing on the front line in the fight against the virus and the moderators of the concerts will be joined by some of these heroes. When you live in Prague you get used to the magical atmosphere of the really old buildings. They surround you and merge into one picture. You can’t distinguish the architectural styles anymore. Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo or Empire – it doesn’t matter for you, they all are mixed up. In the facade of the house U České orlice it is well seen. On the place of this house was the old Gothic building from the 15th century called U pštrosa. It was then renovated to the Baroque style by the Counts of Bubno and Litice, after which it later had the name Bubnovský. In 1896 this house was demolished and a new one was built for MUDr. Čeňěk Klika by 1897. The house was built in a style that combines Renaissance, late Gothic, so-called Swiss and also protoseces elements. The author of the project is Fridrich Ohmann, the builder – Quid Bělský. The owner’s profession is referred to by a number of facade decoration elements. Its painting part was designed by Mikoláš Aleš, small sculptures (and probably also woodcarvings) are the work of Jan Kastner. Interesting is the carved door frame with images of two women. The project, in cooperation with professional and memory institutions, provides evidence of the illegality of totalitarian regimes. To symbolically inaugurate the 2020 tourist season, Prague Castle will be opening its doors to all exhibits on Saturday, May 16 free of charge. Prague Castle will open halls, salons and lounges which are normally reserved for receiving official visits by the President of the Republic. Film incentives in the Czech Republic attracted double the number of productions last year compared to 2018. Almost 80 international productions, encompassing both films and series, were shot in the Czech Republic, generating revenues of €363 million (CZK 9 billion), while the largest proportion was spent by streaming giants Netflix and Amazon. Among the most significant projects shot in 2019 were the second season of Amazon’s steampunk gothic fantasy Carnival Row, starring Cara Delevingne and Orlando Bloom (shot primarily in Prague), and the epic high-fantasy show The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. Production work on both projects will continue during 2020 as well. “Foreign productions alone almost doubled in comparison to 2018, and are at their highest peak since we began monitoring this particular indicator. For the state, it is most advantageous to provide as many film incentives as possible because higher incentives generate higher returns for the Czech economy,” says Helena Bezděk Fraňková, director of the Czech Film Fund. The Czech-Russian Pop-up Lunch will take place on February 29, 2020, in the Prague hotel Ambassador Zlata Husa. Two Russian Chefs Sergey Ternov and Andrey Moiseev will be demonstrating their outstanding culinary skills, joined by the rising star of the Czech culinary scene Vojtech Petrzela. Lunch will consist of seven courses, among which both Czech and Russian culinary classics. Vojtech Petrzela will cook the main Czech dish – corn sous-vide chicken with skin crumble, cabbage dumplings with baked pork side, yellow carrot puree with vanilla, wild broccoli, pickled cabbage with Madeira sauce.
