Prague, laying in the heart of Europe, has a rich history covering more than a thousand years and it is engrossed in tales of myths and legends. Known as one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe, the beautiful yet menacing gothic architecture defines the bewitching capital. The charm of the city, carefully conserved in the dark, winding cobbled streets and mighty towers, ultimately sets the scene for the perfect ghost story. In the spirit of Halloween fast approaching, we thought it would be only fitting to compile a list of some of Prague’s most haunted spots. House at the Golden Well Located in the beautiful district of old town, the alluring gardens and unique artistry of this building are very much deceiving- the house harbours a dark history. Legends say that a housemaid called Ľubomíra tragically drowned after falling to her death in a well which was located beneath the building while she looked for gold. Her cries for help went unheard and it was too late by the time her body was found. It is said that to this day she still spends her evenings haunting the environs of the house, dripping wet with drooping hair, chattering teeth, and...
The anniversary of the Velvet Revolution takes place on November 17, with street exhibitions, light installations and audiovisual projections gracing Národní třída. The organizers behind the celebration are planning a cultural program, with theater performances and debates, at the site of the police violence against students in 1989. In accordance with last year’s example, the event will also be transferred to an online environment. The eighth year of the celebrations of freedom known as Korzo Národní will return to the public after pandemic safety measures. Given the changing situation around COVID-19, the organizers compiled the program so that visitors did not gather in large crowds for individual activities. “This year is a promise for us to return to normal. People will be able to enjoy the program directly on Národní třída during November 17, just as they were used to in the past. We will also offer several ways to celebrate the anniversary from a distance,” organizer Lucie Bílková said. The event planners involved intend to transform Národní třída into a living gallery space for the anniversary. Their agenda includes an outdoor projection regarding the current political situation in Belarus. Visitors can visit street exhibitions or take part in educational...
The Three Kings, comprised of three brave members called Josef Mašín, Václav Morávek, and Josef Balabán, was a group which risked their lives for the resistance movement when Czechoslovakia was annexed by Nazi Germany. All three of the men would eventually die at the hand of the Nazis, but from the years of 1939 to 1942, they played an enormous part in the contributions to the Czechoslovakian cause through their heroic acts. They spent their time relaying important information to the Czechoslovak government-in-exile in London through radio transmitters- sending news and information about both economic and political developments, as well as sharing vital information about German transports. The Three Kings were also renowned for two bomb assassinations in Berlin which they had carried out against the Germans. One assassination saw a suitcase of explosives successfully placed in police headquarters and at the Ministry of Air Travel. Another saw the successful bombing of German soldier’s transport after they added an explosive to coal. They were also responsible for other bomb attacks in Leipzig and Munich. Further acts of sabotage they were behind included setting fire to factories, collecting weapons for the resistance and helping other resistance agents escape from the Nazis....

On Oct. 18, 1896, Prague held its first-ever film screening at the Hotel U černého koně. Optician and mechanic Adolf Oppenheimer carried out the screening, screening only short films at the time. Dismas Šlambor, alias Viktor Ponrepo, established the first permanent Czech cinema a few years later in September of 1907. The theater opened in the house U Modré štiky located on Prague’s Karlova St. Ponrepo’s father was a glider, but rather than endeavor to take over the family business, Ponprepo worked as a traveling magician for a while. When interest in the magic business tanked at the turn of the 19th century, Ponprepo purchased both a phonograph and a cinematograph, kicking off his career in film. His Ponrepo cinema held 200 seats, somewhat resembling a family business. After the theater’s establishment, moving pictures became increasingly popular for the city residents. By 1911, there were nine cinemas located at Prague’s center and another 13 in the suburbs, making for an uptick of 22 cinemas over the course of four years alone. Another three years later, and there were 39 theaters constructed in the city, seeing around 12,000 visitors on weekdays and up to 80,000 on Sundays. Today, with its seemingly...

The Gallery of the Capital City of Prague has exhibitions for over two hundred photographers and their collections. From October 15, 2021, through January 16, 2022, Frida Kahlo will have a featured exhibition where viewers will see her extensive collection of over 6,000 items in the House at the Stone Bell. She was an influential and mysterious Mexican artist whose featured archive wasn’t discovered until 2003. The organizers of the event say that some of the photographs found were done by other famous photographers that befriended Frida including Man Ray and Edward Weston. These photographs are not only historically valued but artistically valued. This is a traveling exhibition and has been seen in various parts of the world with more than half a million spectators. She was born in Mexico City in 1907 and died in 1954, and throughout her life she endured many tragic events. When she was 18 years old she suffered from a severe case of polio and was injured in a bus accident. She underwent 35 different spine and pelvic surgeries which caused detrimental physical and mental problems. During her convalescence, she began to seriously focus on creating art. Mexican Ambassador Rosaura Leonara Rueda Gutiérrez told...
Havel’s corner, unveiled in Brussels on Tuesday, should be reminiscent of the legacy of the former Czech president and writer Václav Havel and at the same time entice people to sit and talk. Two chairs and a round table, through which a tree grows, stand in the park in sight of the European Parliament. According to the Czech Ambassador to Belgium, Pavel Klucký, the space can serve, for example, as a meeting point for citizens and politicians. “We want it to become a real place where various ideas, often controversial, are expressed,” Klucký told reporters, according to whom the space, despite its small size, could become the Brussels form of London’s Hyde Park. Since the place is on the road leading to the meeting place of seven hundred politicians, it could serve the purpose well. The Czech Embassy in Brussels plans to revitalize the site by organizing some events, for example in connection with the upcoming Czech Presidency of the European Union. Similar monument stands in Prague since 2014 The monument, designed by Havel’s presidential architect Bořek Šípek, was created based on cooperation between Prague and Brussels’ City Halls. It is almost identical to the two chairs and table which since 2014...

Prague was recently voted the most beautiful city in the world. With its castles, gorgeous architecture and cobblestone streets, the Czech Republic capital is viewed as one of the most picturesque corners of Europe where tourists entering in floods every year. However, many are ignorant to the fact the Czech Republic is not merely immersed in attractive and charming buildings. Much of its architecture, and where many residents live, is still froze in the times of the communist era, in the form of Panelák housing. Referred to frequently as an ‘architects’ nightmare,’ the bleak, towering and frankly ugly apartments are a stark contrast to the beauty of the traditional, well-loved, construction of the beauty spots of Prague. The Panelák apartments were a quick solution in the communist era- they solved a need for quick, affordable, and modern housing in large quantities when the country was known as Czechoslovakia. Under total government control, soviet-style cities, and the housing developments within, generally featured tower blocks in park-like settings. This explains the enormity of some paneláks, which can be more than 100 meters long, and 20 stories high. Standardized and mass-produced, urban planning in the Soviet-run countries during the Cold War era was...
Back in 2008, a circle of giant stones was built in an idyllic landscape in the South Bohemian village of Holašovice. At first glance, some may confuse this for the famous prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, England, called Stonehenge. But they would be wrong. The Czech Republic in fact has its very own, unique, version. It is called the Holašovice Stonehenge, and it was created upon the expert advice of a well-known psychotronics engineer called Pavel Kozák. The stone circle is said to have the strongest energy of all domestic man-made megaliths. The term megalith refers to a large stone that forms a prehistoric monument. Many people who visit the stones speak of their power- saying that they can take away negative energy from the body and draw back positive energy. Those who visit seem to go to experience the special energy which is found in the centre of the stones. Visitors who choose to delve to the middle must stay silent while the energy is at work, and respect others who are operating inside. There are rumours of a presence of high astral spiritual beings in the area, and for this reason, people have experienced various reactions to being...
