The Prague City Hall has disclosed the details of the New Year surprise it has in store for its citizens on January 1, 2024. Earlier reports indicated that this surprise would serve as compensation for the decision to forgo fireworks, video mapping, and other mass celebrations on New Year’s Eve. The authorities deemed large-scale festivities inappropriate given the backdrop of the war in Ukraine and the challenging economic situation. Instead, Prague City Tourism plans to reduce the cost of visiting popular attractions for one day (January 1): Prague Zoo and the Botanical Gardens in the Troja neighborhood will be open to everyone, with a visit costing only 1 crown. An adult ticket to the Prague Public Transport Museum will cost 60 CZK, while a child’s ticket only 20 CZK. Seven Prague towers, including the Petřín Tower, the Old Town Tower, both towers of the Charles Bridge, and the Powder Gate, among others, will offer a 50% discount on entry. According to a new index, Říčany is the best place to live and offers the highest quality of life in the Czech Republic, followed by Prague and Brandýs nad Labem. Říčany, a small town of over 16,000 souls in the Central Bohemian region located on the south-eastern outskirts of Prague, has – once again – been ranked as the place offering the best quality of life in the Czech Republic. The ranking, put together by data analysis company Obce v Datech in cooperation with consulting firm Deloitte in order to help municipalities identify possible deficiencies and people decide where to live, ranks over 200 Czech municipalities according to a number of criteria (health, environment, work, education, services, safety, transport, leisure, housing, etc.). According to Deloitte manager Filip Neterda, “our major goal is to actually help the cities to get their strategic priorities right, to better target the areas into which public investment is required […] We would be really happy if it could serve as a tool for public investment at the level of a city”. With the temperatures dropping and winter approaching, public ice rinks are gradually opening around Prague for people to enjoy the Advent season. For example, a shopping center’s roof can be an atypical place for ice skating. “Every year, we aim to bring something original to visitors so they can experience skating in new, unusual locations. That’s why we opened an ice rink on the roof of the Nový Smíchov Shopping Centre or inside the fountain in Prague’s Střížkov district. This is unique in the whole country; you won’t find any other round ice rink like this in the Czech Republic,” says Vít Bouše, the organizer of the Prague Ice Skating Rink project. A skating rink will be opened under the Nusle Bridge in Prague’s Folimanka Park in the Jammertal sports and recreation area. It will open on 1 December and will be open until 29 February 2024. The area of the ice rink is 630 square metres. Next to it, visitors will find skate hire and a tent with warming drinks and snacks. The entrance ticket for the whole day will cost CZK 50, while children under six years old can enter free of charge. On the opening day of the ice rink, the organisers will launch a webcam aimed at the ice rink so that visitors can get an idea of how busy it is in advance. In spring, summer and autumn the park is open for roller sports, in winter there is an ice rink. Across Europe, the feast of St. Martin, brings a hearty winter pairing of roasted goose and, in the Czech Republic, St. Martin’s wine (Svatomartinské víno).
