National Gallery Prague celebrates 228 years with free admission to permanent exhibitions on February 3–4. The permanent exhibitions include 20th-century art at Veletržní palác, medieval art in the Convent of St. Agnes, and old masters in the Schwartzenberg and Sternberg palaces. Temporary exhibits in these and other venues are not included. No reservations are required. Prague’s Václav Havel Airport is set to expand its offerings with the introduction of eight new direct destinations during the upcoming 2024 summer season. The list of airlines and their respective launch dates has been disclosed in a press release. European lawmakers on Thursday adopted a resolution calling for a permanent cease-fire in Israel’s war against Hamas, on the condition that the Palestinian militant group in Gaza be dismantled and that all hostages it holds be released. The conflict has divided European Union countries and political groups at the legislature, and reaching a consensus on the wording of the resolution was not an easy task. The original text underlined the need for a permanent cease-fire. It was adopted after an amendment tabled by conservative lawmakers was passed, insisting that Hamas needed to be dismantled for a cease-fire to happen and calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all remaining hostages. “Sustainable peace cannot exist as long as Hamas and other terrorist groups hijack the Palestinian cause and threaten the existence of Israel, the only democracy in the region,” Antonio López-Istúriz, an EPP lawmaker, said at the plenary. In the Ústí nad Labem region, a man under the influence of drugs shocked locals as he ran half-naked down the street, prompting police and paramedics to intervene. Police officers responded to reports of a disoriented man with a swollen face exhibiting unusual behavior. Concerned about the situation, officers called in paramedics as a precautionary measure. Upon arrival, paramedics found out that the man’s ears and penis had been amputated, describing the unusual scene as “amputation of the pinnae of both ears bilaterally and of the penis above the scrotum.” Despite attempts to assist him, the man initially resisted cooperation with both paramedics and police officers. A subsequent drug test revealed traces of methamphetamine and marijuana in his body. With medical intervention, the man eventually began communicating and cooperating. During the interaction, the man admitted to self-inflicting the injuries but was unable to provide a reason for his actions. The swelling in his face was attributed to a fall that had taken place earlier. Following necessary treatment, the man was transported to the hospital. Paramedics suggested that the incident might be linked to amphetamine toxic psychosis.
The first specialized center for victims of sexual violence in the Czech Republic, built by the proFem organization, was officially opened in Prague yesterday, and will start operating on 22 January. The PORT centre in the Prague-Brevnov district will offer crisis assistance, treatment, counselling and therapy, and is equipped with a crisis apartment. In the Czech Republic, 54% of women have experienced sexual harassment or sexual violence, according to a recent survey, the detailed results of which ProFem will publish in February. According to the commissioner, over 900 cases of rape were reported to the police last year, the highest number on record. At the centre, victims will receive crisis assistance and will be offered psychotherapy and social and legal counselling. Basic treatment will be available as well as the collection and preservation of genetic samples for possible provision of evidence and legal representation. The Prague Transport Company (DPP) has signed a deal with Eurovia CS, the winning bidder of the autumn 2023 tender, to lay tram tracks on the upper part of Wenceslas Square. The contract, valued at 1.24 billion crowns excluding VAT, includes a large-scale reconstruction set to start in mid-February 2024 and span about three years, according to city councillor Adam Scheinherr’s announcement on Thursday, January 18. The reintroduction of trams to Wenceslas Square, discontinued on December 13, 1980, is a crucial aspect of the comprehensive square reconstruction. Wenceslas Square, measuring 682 meters in length and approximately 60 meters in width, underwent a reconstruction initiative that began in 2020, primarily focusing on the lower part of the square. In line with architect Jakub Ziegler’s design, tram tracks will stretch from the National Museum to the Můstek metro station exit, merging with existing tracks linking Vodičková and Jindřišská streets. In the summer of 2024, residents and visitors to Prague will be able to view the city centre from a new vantage point. A publicly accessible terrace will open on the roof of the Masaryčka building, recently built by world-famous architect Zaha Hadid. It will house a café, toilets and a seating area.
