The process of gender reassignment in the Czech Republic is started by about a hundred people a year. Most of them opt for hormone therapy, while only approximately three out of a hundred people undergo gender reassignment surgery. This follows from the data provided by the Association of Health Insurance Companies. Transsexuals – people who are born as men but feel like women, or vice versa – apply for gender reassignment. “Transsexuality is a congenital disorder of gender identity, which usually causes serious mental problems. In the Czech health care system, it has its diagnosis and treatment,” said doctor Ludmila Plšková from the Association of Health Insurance Companies. The diagnosis is followed by hormonal treatment supplemented by psychotherapy. If people do not undergo surgery, they take the appropriate hormones for life. Gender reassignment is a long-term process. First, the application of a transsexual patient is assessed by a sexologist, then it is decided by a commission of the Ministry of Health. For example, in 2019, the commission considered 157 applications from transgender patients. Last year’s experiment Protozoon, the first 3D printed house in the Czech Republic, showed the benefits of using 3D printing in construction. Home doesn´t mean only four walls, good civic amenities are also important for a happy life. Building Society Stavební spořitelna Česká spořitelna (Buřinka) therefore decided to use 3D printing technology to support sports. The first 3D printed parkour playground is now being created in Prague 11. This project is an example of cooperation between the private sector, research, and the public sphere. The Czech construction industry is facing many challenges, such as a shortage of workers, insufficient automation, and fast-rising prices of building materials. According to Buřinka, robotics and 3D printing would help solve the situation. “There are many playgrounds for preschoolers, but older children don´t have many options, so we decided to use innovative 3D printing technology to create a parkour playground. The extensive ruins of a Gothic castle soar high over the Malošín Mountain near the town of Bavorov in South Bohemia. The area of the Helfenburk Castle of 1.27 hectares makes it one of the largest ruins in the Czech Republic. It has a well-preserved defence system of cannon and bastions. The ruins also contain a large, two-bay palace. The romantic countryside of Helfenburk is becoming more and more popular for weddings and interesting cultural events. The castle was founded in the 14th century by the Rožmberk family. In 1593, the last member of the Rožmberk family, Petr Vok, sold the castle with the entire domain to the city of Prachatice. The Czech Republic´s central bank has increased its key interest rate by a quarter-point to 0.75% to tackle inflation amid the economy´s rebound from the coronavirus pandemic. It was the second such increase in about two months. In June, the Czech National Bank raised key interest rates, by 0.25 percentage points to 0.5 percent. Analysts say the main reason is fears of rising inflation related to the ongoing economic recovery, and the market expects two more rate increases this year. Analysts had predicted Thursday´s move, and a member of the bank´s board had indicated that the rate might be hiked further later in the year as the bank considers high inflation as a major threat. The increase in the key rate will inevitably lead to a further rise in the cost of consumer goods and mortgage loans. How abruptly this happens depends on the strategy of each particular bank. Inflation reached 2.8% in June, above the bank´s 2% target, as the economy registered a record 7.8% year-on-year growth in the second quarter.

Prague continues to reduce visual smog. This time, the city focused its attention on advertising benches at a number of Prague’s public transport stops and in public spaces. The city of Prague has been on a years-long campaign to cleanse the city of “visual smog.” In 2019, bubble makers, giant Disney mascots, and other types of entertainers were banned from the city centres. The capital will remove 1,400 benches from various areas of Prague. The municipality does not plan to replace them yet. The removal of 50 benches began on Tuesday. “The ones in Olbrachtova Street in Prague 4 have already been removed. The gradual removal of approximately 1,400 benches will take place after a protracted dispute with a former tenant of several city plots” says City Councilor Jan Chabr, responsible for property management. On Saturday 7 August, Brno’s residents will have the chance to witness a beautiful sight in the city’s skies. As part of the 24th year of the Ignis Brunensis festival, the Czech City of Brno will organise the country’s first drone show. The show will take place above Kraví hora at 21:30 and 23:00, and entry will be free for all. As TheMayor.eu reports, the City of Brno explains that the novelty show will consist of 100 drones flying in the night sky. Music will accompany the movement of the drones as they make various fascinating shapes above the spectators. On-trade volume sales of beer fell by 40% in 2020 in light of the impact of COVID-19. Off-trade volume sales of beer, meanwhile, grew by 16% in 2020 due to COVID-19’s impact. For this year’s elections to the Chamber of Deputies, 22 electoral groups submitted candidate lists. There are about a third fewer of them than in the last election four years ago.
