Pierpaolo Riccio loves the doors of Prague. So much so, that he set up an Instagram account to start sharing their exquisite designs and rich history with the world. Two years after its launch, Riccio has released Best Prague Door’s 2021 calendar; a selection of 12 unique doors which have survived from the Romanesque to Modernist era. The door that inspired Riccio to start his small business is nestled in Nusle, Prague 4. It borders the entrance to a palace built-in 1904-1904, a few years after Nusle become an independent town. Building similar to this one, mostly made in a Neo-Renaissance style, were demolished at the end of the nineteenth century to give way to the construction of apartments, but this one survived. Its design is a grand as the history; two giant statues guard the entrances with Ukeles in hand. “These are typical of Neo-classicism because the classical style represents two musicians,” Riccio explains. The shapes covering their outfits are reminiscent of alchemy, masonry and secret societies. Data published by the Czech Statistical Office in the Statistical Yearbook 2020 show that last year, the Czech Republic had the lowest unemployment rate in the EU for the fourth year in a row. The unemployment rate reached only two percent. Germany ranked second with a 3.2 percent unemployment rate, while Greece remained on the other end of the statistics with 17.3 percent. The EU average unemployment rate was 6.3 percent, while in the eurozone, it was 7.5 percent. The statistics also revealed that in that period, the Czech economy grew faster than the EU and the eurozone average of 1.5 percent and 1.3 percent, respectively. Last year, it grew by 2.6 percent. With 5.5 percent, Ireland’s gross domestic product (GDP) reported the fastest growth. Furthermore, according to published statistics, the standard of living in the Czech Republic last year approached the average level of EU countries. Gross domestic product per capita at purchasing power parity increased to 92 percent of the EU average from the previous 91 percent. According to the Czech Statistical Office, the food consumption in the Czech Republic last year rose by 1.9 percent, amounting to 796.5 kilograms per capita. Compared to last year, it rose by 1.9 percent. “Historically, the highest consumption per capita was achieved last year in the consumption of rice, namely 6.7 kilograms, then in poultry meat 29 kilograms, cheese 13.8 kilograms, other dairy products 35.2 kilograms and southern fruit 37.5 kilograms,” said Renata Vodičková, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Forestry Statistics. Meat consumption rose to 80.3 kilos, that’s around twice the average of 1950 consumption. On the contrary, the consumption of bread, rabbit meat, milk, and salt decreased. Year-on-year, the consumption of mineral waters and soft drinks decreased by 4.7 liters to 246.8 liters. The decrease was mainly in mineral waters, by 9.2 percent to 56.8 liters. On the contrary, lemonades recorded an increase of one percent to 93.8 liters. Coffee consumption increased by 5.4 percent to 2.2 kilograms, according to statistical data. A Czech Christmas ornament maker has added tiny masks to the country’s traditional golden pigs, which are said to arrive in the homes of good children who fast before Christmas Eve’s family feast. The glass ornaments which can be hung from a Christmas tree have proved incredibly popular. OZDOBAcz company owner Romana Juklova said they decided to mask the pigs in September to reflect how Czechs are adapting for Christmas this year. “We used to add bows and flowers to them and this year, we added a face mask… We hope that next year we can decorate them a bit more cheerfully.” According to custom, the pigs bring good luck and happiness. The masked pig ornaments have proved so popular, Juklova said, that they are making little else. “They have become a massive hit,” she said. “Now we are not doing anything else apart from making the piglets in face masks.”

Police released online maps of crime in the Czech Republic in which people can see the numbers of various types of crimes and offenses in individual municipalities and their parts. The map is available at this link. The map also says when a crime was reported and whether the perpetrator was found or not. The exact locations in which the crimes were committed cannot be seen on the map in order to protect the victims and their personal data. A part of the maps will not be accessible to everybody but only to the municipal authorities and the police, for example for planning the activities of police patrol and for taking preventive measures. Last spring, in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic, Prague Airport began to implement a number of measures aimed at protecting the health of both passengers and airport employees. Tucked in a corner of Vinohrady in Prague 2, an Italian wine bar run by a couple team is serving up the taste of Tuscany. Images of an apartment styled as a metro carriage has been shared across social media. But this isn’t a novelty – the owner has listed the apartment’s lease as tourism dries up in the city due to Coronavirus. It is located in the Zizkov district, in Prague 3. The owner clearly has a warm feeling for Prague’s subway. The apartment comes in at just 14 square meters but has been packed with details that any Prague traveller will recognize: front doors, handrails, seats, armchairs, and even a window. Revised GDP data from the Czech Republic suggests that the third-quarter was slightly better than the first estimate. The economy grew by 6.9%, but the second wave of the pandemic will push the last quarter into contractionary territory again but the overall outlook for 2021 should improve as vaccines become available. Better figures than expected The Czech statistical office revised third-quarter GDP, and so the domestic economy grew by 6.9% quarter on quarter after plummeting by 8.5% in 2Q, and the year-on-year decline eased to -5.0% (after -10.7% in 2Q). Compared to previously published values, this is a slight improvement. As expected, the breakdown confirmed a significant increase in household consumption and foreign demand. However, growth was significantly affected by the low base effect from the previous quarter due to the lockdown. Many sub-components recorded strong quarter-on-quarter growth, but they remained in decline year-on-year. Third-quarter growth was particularly driven by exports adding 26% QoQ, after a 21% decline in the previous quarter. As such, net export contributed 8.8 percentage points to 3Q quarterly growth. Also, household consumption increased by 5% QoQ (2.4 pp contribution), while investments fell further by 5% QoQ (-1.2 ppt), with their year-on-year decline intensifying to -11%. A restaurant in Kunratice and a nightclub in the centre of Prague are facing the threat of a 3 million crowns fine after opening despite the government’s Coronavirus restrictions banning them from doing so. Prague City Hall is beginning administrative proceedings with both companies, spokesman Vít Hofman confirmed. “We have been in contact with the police since the beginning. We will deal with the cases as soon as the police hand them over to us. Subsequently, we will initiate administrative proceedings,” Hofman added. According to sources, an illegal party was held in a club in the centre of Prague on Saturday. It is reported that over 100 people attended – the majority of whom were foreigners. These individuals now face fines of 20,000 to two million crowns. Meanwhile, the Šeberák restaurant in Kunratice opened because the owner ‘wanted to express his disagreement with the government’s attitude towards entrepreneurs.’ The business could now be forced to pay up to 3 million crowns. “In the case of the Šeberák restaurant, where there was a deliberate bending of the law, the situation can be more complicated, and more bodies can deal with it,” Hofman explained.
