The musical legacy of Antonin Dvorak is one of the bastions of European cultural heritage. During his lifetime the composer became one of Europe’s most important symphonists and writers of oratorios and chamber works. Czech composer Antonín Dvořák was born on this day in 1841. Remembered as arguably one of the most versatile composers of all time, Dvořák’s signature works include the ‘New World’ Symphony’, the ‘American’ String Quartet, ‘Dumky‘ Piano Trio, opera ‘Rusalka’ – and his much-loved Violin and Cello Concerti. Born in Nelahozaeves, a village near Prague, his music is incredibly varied, perhaps resulting in his wide appeal. His influences include the styles of Czech, Moravian, and other Slavic folk melodies. In 1875 Dvořák was awarded a state grant by the Austrian government, and this award brought him into contact with Johannes Brahms, with whom he formed a close and fruitful friendship. Brahms not only gave him valuable technical advice but also found him an influential publisher in Fritz Simrock, and it was with his firm’s publication of the Moravian Duets (composed 1876) for soprano and contralto and the Slavonic Dances (1878) for piano duet that Dvořák first attracted worldwide attention to himself and to his country’s music. The Covid situation in the Czech Republic is “now worrying, and the spread of the infection across many regions and districts is intensifying”, the Czech branch of the World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Monday. “Testing, contact tracing, and isolation are the only ways to fight Covid,” the local WHO office said on Facebook “People without symptoms can also transmit the virus. Slot machines should completely disappear from Prague within the next three years. Lawmakers in the Czech capital Prague have voted in favour of a new decree that would implement a ban on all technical gambling games in the city, with the draft legislation set to go in front of the City Council later this week. The bill would prohibit all mechanical, electromechanical and electronic games in Prague, including slot machines and video lottery terminals, but would allow live gambling to continue. On Monday, Prague councilors approved a draft amendment to the law that regulates the gambling business in the city. The final decision will be taken by the Prague City Council on Thursday. However, the municipality said that if the decree is approved, companies need to remove the slot machines after their permits have expired. “The last decree on gambling regulation is from 2015. Unfortunately, it did not limit the number of casino gambling rooms. A visit by the Czech senate speaker to Taiwan was a “boyish provocation,” the country’s President Miloš Zeman said Sunday. Miloš Vystrčil, the president of the Senate, traveled to Taiwan last week for a six-day trip as part of a 90-strong delegation aimed at boosting trade relations. The number of people infected with the coronavirus has continued to surge in the Czech Republic, surpassing 700 for the first time. The Health Ministry says the day-to-day increase reached a record of 798 new confirmed cases on Friday. The announcement comes after the country registered over 600 cases the previous two days, also records at the time. People will be required to wear protective masks in shops and shopping centers. Prague chief public health officer Zdenka Jagrova said that under the new restrictions, which come into effect on Sept. 9, bars and clubs in Prague will have to close by midnight. Children must wear masks in common areas in schools from Sept. 14, she said. At the same time, bars, restaurants and nightclubs have to be closed from midnight to 6 am.
