This year, more streets will be festively decorated in Prague. The municipality is investing almost four million CZK in the lighting, and in the past years, it spent around two million CZK on decorations. Residents of Prague 9 will also see Christmas decorations in some of their streets this year. The capital will have Christmas trees in Na Příkopě Street, and a small park in the Old Town Square, as well as lighting on them, told Prague City Council spokesman Vit Hofman. “Starting this year, the lighting of the city will be much more extensive, in more streets,” he added. The municipality will provide Christmas decorations in the city center, for example on Mariánské náměstí, Old Town and Wenceslas Square, Smetana, and Dvořák Embankments, Evropská and Na Příkopě streets. Unlike in previous years, Christmas decorations will also sparkle Prague 9 this year. “You will see lights in Vysočany, Sokolovská Street, from Balabenka to UN Square and Freyova Street,” said City Hall spokeswoman Marie Kurková. Christmas markets (Vánoční trhy) are a key ingredient of the festive magic in the Czech Republic, and the Prague markets are the most impressive in the country. The Namesti Miru Christmas market officially opens today, November 20th and is the first Christmas market of the season. It features more handmade goods than the touristy products that the Old Town Square market sells. You can find goods such as handmade soaps and lotions, jewelry, wooden toys, ceramic decorations, crystals, scarves and so on. The imposing neo-Gothic Church of St. Ludmila overlooks the wintery Christmas market, complete with a massive Christmas tree and Nativity scene. Velvet Revolution 2019 is, historically, the largest celebration yet. In Prague, the program of the Freedom Festival was attended by 200,000 people. Concerts, discussions, and screenings were also held in 50 other cities throughout the country. One of Prague’s exceptional events this year was the Velvet Procession, in which 11,000 people followed the memories of witnesses. Today, a press release by the 2019 Driving Cities Index released newfound data on an investigation into the best and worst cities for driving around the world. The study not only identifies which cities are “best” and “worst” to drive in, but it also points out the various factors that affect our morning commute, our road trip plans, and our reliance on cars in general. Because a number of elements affect the driver experience—like infrastructure, congestion, air pollution, and others—a study like this one can help show how cities are successfully, or unsuccessfully, utilizing infrastructure and legislation to improve driving conditions. With regard to accidents, taking into account the size of their populations, Manchester, England and Stockholm, have the lowest fatality rates. At the other end of the scale, Lagos, Orlando, Florida and Kolkata, India are among the most dangerous cities for drivers. The study found that Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia had the worst problem with road rage, with a score of 99.12. It also had a death rate of 16.5 per 100,000 inhabitants. Surviving members of Prague’s Jewish community and the city’s government have agreed that fragments of Jewish gravestones uncovered during future excavation work will be turned over to the city’s Old Jewish in Prague’s Žižkov district. The stones were removed from the cemetery in 1987, when the country’s Jewish population had dropped to just 8,000 people, and cut into cobbles for the construction of pedestrian walkways in areas including Wenceslas Square, Na Prikope and 28 rijna. Jewish community of Prague chairman Frantisek Banyai said that “the community welcomed the city’s decision and hopes such cooperation will continue.” The community has been pointing out that parts of the pavement were made from gravestones for many years. Lately, Prague 1 leadership considered placing an information plaque on the specified location to draw attention to the fact. A recently founded project, the Search for the Lost Face of Jewish Cemeteries, wants to help in finding and identifying the gravestone fragments. The project was inspired by a campaign focused on the search for lost gravestones from a cemetery in Prostejov, central Moravia, that took place in 2015-2016. During the Nazi and Communist regimes in former Czechoslovakia, tens of Jewish cemeteries were completely destroyed.
