On Saturday, April 1, Prague’s Deputy Mayor for Transport Zdeněk Hříb unveiled a new road sign prohibiting entry to trams. The official posted a picture of the novelty on his social media accounts. “Due to numerous requests, we are introducing a new sign prohibiting the entry of trams. Our patience for the negative effects of tram traffic is overflowing. Trams are taking up space on the roads, obstructing the passage of cars and creating traffic jams. Now that has come to an end,” joked Hříb.
Prague City Tourism in cooperation with the National Library of the Czech Republic are launching a new route through the premises of Prague’s Clementinum, starting on 1 April. The Baroque Tour can be taken exclusively with a qualified guide, giving tourists the chance to admire the unique building including the Baroque library. This special tourist route, including the Astronomical Tower of the Clementinum, will thus join the eight monuments which Prague City Tourism is currently responsible. The popular Vltava River ferries have been running again since last weekend. Other links are now in operation until October 29th, in addition to the P1 and P2 ferries, which operate all year. However, there is one minor difference this year: the commonly used ferry from Holešovice to Karlin will only transport people until the new HolKa walking bridge opens. The new bridge is slated to debut this summer. The boat will also not service Stvanice Island because the eastern end of the island is blocked off by the new walking bridge building site. Prague boats transported over 619,000 passengers last year. The P2 route between Podbaba and Podhoří was typically the largest ferry, carrying 219,000 passengers and 23,000 bicycles. Based on traffic data gathered during the restoration of the tram route between Malostranská and Ujezd, Prague hopes to reduce congestion in the city center. The Mala Strana neighborhood should be closed to through traffic in the future, according to Zdeněk Hřib, Deputy Mayor for Transport. In the next three weeks, the government will assess the data in collaboration with the Prague City Transport Company, the Technical Administration of Communications, and the ICT Operator. “There was no traffic jam in Prague following the closure of Mala Strana because traffic was diverted to the Blanka tunnel,” added Hřib. “The primary reason for investing tens of billions of crowns in the Blanka tunnel was to settle down Mala Strana,” he added. “Now we have experienced a kind of test, which should have been done in 2015 when Blanka opened, and we will evaluate the impact,” Hřib said. “We will also have an intensive dialogue not only at the municipality but also with the Prague 1 district about how we will approach this problem in the future,” he added. A must-visit address for craft beer lovers in Prague is the HANGÁR. More precisely, the “HANGÁR Pub and Beer Shop” in Prague’s Letná district. HANGÁR is the house pub of the brewery of the same name, a so-called “flying” brewery, or to use the more familiar American expression, a gypsy brewery. In other words, a brewery that doesn’t have its own brewhouse and “cooks” – as the Czechs say – its beer in other breweries. There are at least two beers from the house brewery on tap. The former Smíchov distillery in Prague will be the site to a new permanent exhibition of David Černý’s work. The new 5 storey, 1,200 square metre museum will be opening on April 1, and will provide space for additional exhibitions alongside Černý’s work. Opposite to the MeetFactory, the distillery has remained vacant for over 20 years. Although construction has been approved for the cultural moment, the new building will be required to preserve the factory chimney as well as parts of the brewery. With architectural design by Černý studio Black n’ Arch, Development company Trimega has invested 4 billion crowns into renovations, and the first apartments will be completed by the end of the year. “The building is a listed monument, so it was not possible to knock it down and build a normal house here. Palác Archa, the iconic office building built in the rondo-cubist design, is marking its 100th anniversary. To commemorate Archa Palace’s centennial, a limited edition A3-size graphic of the structure was made using risograph printing technology, an ecologically beneficial procedure. The inks used are made from soy and rice, and the paper for the printing grid is produced from banana peels and sustainable farming.
