Russian war symbols were seen among the thousands of protestors gathered in Prague to protest war and poverty on Saturday, with some attempting to tear down the Ukrainian flag that has been hanging outside the National Museum over the past year. Besides displaying Russian war symbols, some protestors held banners stating, “STOP the war, STOP NATO”. “I expect the organisers to distance themselves from these acts of violence. It gives the impression that the entire so-called demonstration against poverty was just a cover for pro-Russian provocation, and we certainly cannot be tolerant of such manifestations,” Rakušan told Czech Television on Sunday. The protests resulted in the arrest of 18 people involved in the attempt to tear down the Ukrainian flag at the museum, said a Czech Police spokeswoman who added that two police officers tasked with guarding the entrance to the museum were injured. Police also arrested a man who wore a Russian Wagner group patch and the Z symbol on his backpack and jacket on suspicion of public denial, questioning, and approval of genocide. On Saturday, Czech media reported that thousands of people took to the streets of Prague demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Petr Fiala amid rising costs of living. Czech Television said that about 10,000 people gathered in the Czech capital, while several dozen marched to the National Museum building in an attempt to get the Ukrainian flag down. As someone who has been keeping an eye on the real estate market in the Czech Republic, I wasn’t as surprised as some to see a significant drop in apartment prices last year. This trend was particularly noticeable in older buildings, while the number of sales only decreased slightly for new constructions. However, the latest data from Valuo.cz, which analyses sales prices based on the land registry and advertisements, revealed that even high-priced areas around Prague’s metro stations are also experiencing price reductions, which to me wasn’t something I necessarily expected. When looking at properties around metro stations, Valuo compares renovated apartments in personal ownership with an area of eighty square meters located within a radius of one kilometre from the station, except for Letňany, where the radius is extended to 1.5 kilometres given the relative lower amount of properties close to the metro. Based on Valuo’s current analysis, it appears apartments near metro stations have become cheaper for the first time in the last six years. The average price has dropped for almost all stations compared to last year. The most significant decreases were seen at Bořislavka on line A (by 24%) and Národní trýda on line B (by 20%)....
The site formerly occupied by the Smíchov Distillery will soon be undergoing an extensive transformation. By 2026, a revitalization project inspired by London’s Kings Cross will be completed on the site of the former Smíchov distillery, situated between Nádražní and Strakonická streets, which has remained vacant since 2001. The investor, the Trigema group, has introduced a three-stage plan for their development, including the construction of residential buildings, school facilities, and a food and entertainment district. The project’s aesthetics plan to integrate the area’s industrial past, displaying the previous architecture – brick facades and original chimneys – alongside modern design. Currently, both buildings are under monument protection. Work by David Černý, the famous Czech artist, will be displayed in a gallery located in the former brewery, alongside a cafe and terrace. On Thursday, March 9th, a motorbike rally called “Highway to Hrad” will take place in the Prague city centre to coincide with the inauguration of Czech President-elect Petr Pavel, a known motorcycle enthusiast. The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Výstaviště Praha Exhibition Grounds, where participants can ride all types and models of motorcycles. The rally will begin at 11:00 a.m., with riders traveling through the main city streets, including Wenceslas Square and Old Town Square, before concluding at Strahov. The Prague Harley-Davidson Club Praha is the main organizer of the event, and authorities have been notified that up to 800 motorbikes will participate, though the exact number is uncertain. As of March 2, Prague Castle’s South Gardens are open to the public after its closure during winter. Accessible year-round, the visiting hours of the Royal Garden have been extended and is now open from 10:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m. Further adjustments to the grounds include modifying existing tickets and lowering entrance fees. The Prague Castle Administration (SPH) is hoping to focus on domestic visitors; introducing new tours which visit places inside of the grounds that are typically off-limits for tourists. Although entry to the Prague Castle grounds remains restricted by security checkpoints, visitors to the Royal Garden and Deer’s Moat will be able to circumvent these checkpoints. Like the Royal Garden, both parts of Jelení kopóp have been open year-round since last year. Depending on good weather, the access footbridges from Klárov and from Jeléní street will be open as well, and the Deer Moat will be open daily from 10:00 a.m to dusk.
