Korean Air is celebrating 15 years since the launch of regular flights between Prague and Seoul. The route between Prague and Seoul is now serviced during the winter season by the latest Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner with a capacity of 269 seats, and during the summer schedule a Boeing 747-8i with a capacity of 368 seats is used. Korean Air is one of the few airlines to offer Prague first class. The inaugural flight landed in Prague on May 15, 2004. At that time, an Airbus A330-200 with 257 seats in two travel classes was used. Over the years on the Prague route, Korean Air has also used an Airbus A330-200, Airbus A330-300, Boeing 777-200ER, Boeing 777-300ER and Boeing 747-400. In March 2014, the Airbus A380 was deployed on the line. “The direct route from Prague to Seoul is one of the most important long-haul connections from Václav Havel Airport Prague, and also the oldest. Over 15 years of operation, more than 1.3 million passengers have flown with Korean Air on this route, and over 5,600 departures and landings by this carrier have taken place in Prague,” Václav Řehoř, Chairman Board of Directors of Prague Airport, said in a press release....
The Žižkov Tower is the subject of renewed complaints from the Prague Jewish community, which says it is a brooding reminder of the antisemitism of the regime that ruled former Czechoslovakia for more than 40 years and whose dark history needs to be officially recognized. “Part of our community is still present under the ground here and people should know about it,” said Pavel Vesely, a history and tourism coordinator with the Prague Jewish community. “It reflects our history in the second half of the 20th century, when there was pressure – part state-organized antisemitism, part anti-religion – to erase the remnants of a Jewish presence in Prague. And the communists did a thorough job because if you speak to people visiting the tower, they have no idea a Jewish cemetery was here.” The TV Tower stands on what was once Prague’s biggest Jewish cemetery, where rabbis, distinguished scholars and leading industrialists, among others, were laid to rest, while some graves remains were reburied in other cemeteries, others were reportedly dumped in a landfill site outside Prague, in violation of Jewish law forbidding the disinterment of buried bodies. With the summer season slowly rolling in, Prague is getting prepped for all fans of moving pictures; not just with regular summer cinemas but also with the new addition of a cinema on a boat! The boat itself dates back to 1925, and it was specifically refurbished into a cinema for its current iteration. Anchored in Holešovice, Kinolod (literally, ‘cinema-boat’) is surprisingly nice and cosy inside. Complete with a bar with seating made out of wooden palettes, it conveys a bit of a Berlin vibe. Films are played usually twice a day during the workweek and three times a day on Saturday and ticket costs Kč130, the typical price at an arthouse cinema in Prague. The films on show are a mix of local and international ones. The Czech films often come with English subtitles, but, if you’re visiting, make sure to check ahead of time on the boat cinema’s website in the programme section. PRAGUE (AP): After producing plenty of elephant dung and other manure for years, Prague Zoo has capitalized on its expertise by creating a new permanent exhibit on the world of animal excrement. It displays information and samples of everything from fossil turds, also known as coprolites, from extinct animals to the excrement of modern-day gorillas, lions, elephants, horses, turtles, wombats, camels, and other animals, all in various sizes, shapes, textures, and colors. Zoo director Miroslav Bobek, whose surname literally means “poop” in Czech, says he was inspired by American George Frandsen and his online museum. The exhibition coincides with the zoo’s publication of a new edition of the “Encyclopedia of Excrements.” The zoo has been selling elephant dung to gardeners as fertilizer for years.
Prague’s annual Million Marihuana March takes place today, May 4, and starts at 12:30 pm at Karlovo náměstí. The march, which attracts thousands of people hand has several music trucks, will go through the city center and end up in Štvanice ostrov. There is a large program with live music, DJs and seminars on the island from 2:30 pm to 10 pm. The purpose behind the march is to encourage the legalization of marijuana for medical and recreational uses, and the draw attention to the what organizers call the absurdity of the current laws and the problems with prohibition. The event offers not only political discussion, lectures and interesting workshops, but also a rich program on several podiums, a non-profit sector and a program for children. Marihuana is legal for the treatment of certain medical conditions but possession of more than a small amount is still an offence. The law says possession of up to 15 grams of dry cannabis for personal use, or cultivation of up to five plants, is a misdemeanor with a fine of up to Kč 15,000, but fines are usually lower. A ban on fires including smoking in Prague at places with a high fire risk is now in effect due to dry conditions. It will be in place until the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) changes the declared risk level. Prohibited activities include: making or keeping open fires; smoking (with the exception of electronic cigarettes); using pyrotechnic articles (fireworks); using flying lanterns, other lanterns or torches; throwing burning or smoldering objects; using water from a firefighting source for purposes other than extinguishing fires Czech firefighters said the most frequent causes of fires they had to put out were human neglect, technical defects of vehicles and machines. Following the terrible Notre Dame’s fire in Paris, Prague’s Petřín Tower – which was modeled after, and strongly resembles, the Eiffel Tower – will lit up in blue, white, and red in a show of solidarity. Yesterday, a major fire has engulfed the medieval cathedral, one of France’s most famous landmarks. The 850-year-old Gothic building’s spire and roof have collapsed but the main structure, including the two bell towers, has been saved. The cause of the fire is not yet clear. The special lighting was not a first-time event. On public holidays and other important dates, the tower has also been lit up in red, white, and blue after the Czech Republic flag. During the past two years, the tower has been lit in green to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, which will occur again on March 17, 2016. However, not everyone agrees with the lighting. Following the first exhibition in Spring 2017, VOAYER organizers have opened a permanent space, where gallery goers can see, touch and photograph real-life nudes on a daily basis. The faces of the naked models at the exhibition are often covered with masks. Some of them wear leather dog-collars. “Nudity is today more common in the online world than in reality,” the official site states. “That’s why VOAYER’s sole and essential goal is to provide an exciting real-life experience.” Visitors to the show must follow strict rules. Three Chelsea fans were stopped from entering Slavia Prague’s Eden Arena for Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final first leg after an alleged racist chant about Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah was posted on social media, Sky Sports reported. A video, apparently filmed by the fans themselves, was broadcast on social media on Thursday, surfacing before the first leg of the quarter-final against Slavia Prague. The 19-second clip showed a small group of fans gathered in a bar in Prague singing the derogatory chant. Chelsea issued a statement on their website condemning any form of discriminatory behavior. “Chelsea FC finds all forms of discriminatory behavior abhorrent and where there is clear evidence of Chelsea season ticket holders or members involved in such behavior, we will take the strongest possible action against them. “Such individuals are an embarrassment to the vast majority of Chelsea supporters who won’t tolerate them in their club.” Former Chelsea player Salah is of Muslim faith. Located in the Old Town, just a few minutes from the tourists boulevards full of “Czech Drinking Team” hoodies and Soviet matryoshka salesmen, Hemingway Bar is a gem to be treasured. It’s a venue with an atmosphere, which is upscale, but not posh, classy yet unpretentious.
