City Hall approved a subsidy to modernize the main air ventilation in the shafts of the Metro A, B and C lines and an upgrade of the escalators at the Palmovka station. The Prague Public Transport Company (DPP) will replace obsolete facilities for safer and more economical ones that are energy efficient. DPP is asking for a total of Kč 109.6 million for both projects. The costs of the modernization will be co-financed from the Operational Program Prague — the Pole of Growth of the Czech Republic (OP PPR). The restoration of Prague’s Rašínovo nábřeží embankment will begin in mid-April. Prague City Hall approved the changes last year, but the renovation works were delayed due to administrative and technical reasons. The waterfront on the opposite side of the river at Smíchov is also being renovated. The revitalisation will mainly concern the renovation of 12 rooms set into the stone walls, under the upper-level street. Some of them will be turned into public cafes and galleries featuring glass entrances. New benches and trash containers will be placed along the promenade as well. Around 2010, Náplavka was transformed from peaceful footpaths with pleasant views into a buzzing alternative social hotspot. Farmers markets, sports events, open boats and cultural activities are among the list of things Náplavka have been host to. In recent years, however, locals feel the space has lost some of its alternative charm as it has become more commercialized, with an influx of beer tents marketed to tourists. Author: red
The National Gallery of Prague launched “Touching Masterpieces,” a campaign that lets them touch iconic sculptures in virtual space. Created with help from Geometry Prague and NeuroDigital, in collaboration with the Leontinka Foundation for the blind and visually impaired, the virtual reality experience features haptic Avatar VR gloves, specially adapted for this campaign, that let the blind “touch” work like Michelangelo’s David, Venus de Milo and the bust of Nefertiti. Haptic gloves enable you to touch 3-D objects in virtual space. When you reach out to touch something, your sense of depth and texture passes through the unit as vibrating feedback. Multi-frequency technology can stimulate different types of skin cells’ tactile responses, giving the blind a detailed “sense” of the object they’re touching. Author: red
