Kenyan long-distance runner Sebastian Sawe has clinched victory at the Prague Half-Marathon smashing the course record with a sensational time of 58 minutes and 24 seconds. The reigning World Half Marathon champion outpaced a competitive field to secure his triumph improving his personal best and setting a new benchmark in the event’s history. Sawe, 29, entered the race on the back of a seventh-place finish at the recent World Athletics Cross Country Championships. Despite this, he arrived in Prague with confidence, buoyed by a previous personal best of 58:29 from his victory at the 2022 Bahrain Royal Night Half Marathon. His performance in Prague not only surpassed his own expectations but also broke the course record of 58:47 set by Ethiopia’s Atsedu Tsegay. Petr Rada, the coach of Prague Dukla (the second league), has been given a record eight-month sentence by the disciplinary committee for a racist insult. In addition, he will pay a fine of CZK 80,000. Rada, who used to coach the Czech national football team, cannot attend Dukla’s matches until the end of the autumn season. The unprecedented punishment comes in response to Rada’s racist remarks during the second league match against Zbrojovka Brno, in which he called Zbrojovka’s coach Tomáš Polach a “desperate gypsy” (“ty zoufalej cikáne”). Rada joined Jablonec as manager in October 2003 and led the team to the final of the 2006–07 Czech Cup, where they lost against Sparta Prague. Slavia Praha football club has pulled out of a friendly match against current Slovak league champions Slovan Bratislava after the latter played a game against a Russian club. Slavia Praha were due to face Slovan, but backed out when they decides to play Dinamo Moscow in a game arranged as part of a training camp in Qatar this month. Slovan lost the game 2-1. The move drew criticism, including in Ukraine where Ukrainian football teams called on Slovan to not go ahead with the match. Taking to social media, FC Karpaty Lviv posted a photo of a stadium hit by Russian rockets. But speaking to the Denník N daily, club owner and business tycoon Ivan Kmotrík defended the decision. He said: “Who should we have played when Dinamo was there as well? Running as an activity, says Carlo Capalbo, will never die. As a sport, however, he believes it is facing big challenges. That’s what keeps him up at night. The passionate Neapolitan has long found himself under running’s spell and is now a key figure in the world of road racing. He is the founder and head of RunCzech, a Prague-based organization which organizes and stages a range of major international running events but also, under Capalbo’s motto of “All Runners are Beautiful”, aims to connect and grow running communities. It’s that key element of connection where he believes the real issue lies.
