Alcohol Restrictions Under Discussion
The Czech government is considering restrictions on alcohol sales amid persistently high levels of alcohol consumption, which causes approximately 7,000 deaths annually. According to a STEM poll, nearly 60% of residents support raising alcohol taxes, reflecting growing awareness of its harm. However, the authorities are proceeding cautiously. The Minister of Health has warned that a sharp increase in taxes could lead to more smuggling and the growth of an illegal market.
Breast Cancer Cases Rising Among Young Women
Breast cancer cases among young women in the Czech Republic have risen sharply. Over the past 20 years, the rate has increased by more than 130%, and approximately 350 patients under the age of 39 are now diagnosed each year. The tumors tend to progress more rapidly and are often detected at later stages. Possible causes include insufficient preventive care, infrequent self-examinations, and the influence of hormones found in the environment, food, and contraception.
Many Czech Families Still Lack Financial Reserves
Czech households are gradually adapting to economic instability, but a significant share of the population remains vulnerable. Around 14% of families have no financial reserves and are essentially living paycheck to paycheck. According to a study by BNP Paribas Cardif and Ipsos, anxiety about personal finances has fallen from 62% to 55%. However, expectations about the size of a financial safety net are growing. Over the past year, the average amount Czechs consider sufficient for emergencies has increased from 59,500 to 68,000 crowns.
Cheaper Fuel in Poland Draws Czech Drivers
Differences in fuel prices have led to a rush of Czech drivers heading to Polish gas stations. Diesel in Poland is now almost 7 crowns cheaper, causing long queues in border areas. The lower prices in Poland are the result of state-imposed price caps designed to reduce the impact of external factors on the fuel market.
Court Blocks Vatican Treaty Ratification
The Czech Constitutional Court has ruled that part of the treaty with the Vatican, concluded by the previous government, is unconstitutional, effectively blocking its ratification. The court cited provisions concerning the secrecy of confession and access to church archives as problematic, arguing that they create privileges for the Catholic Church and violate the principle of religious equality in the Czech Republic.
