In order to commemorate the end of WW2, the Office of the Government of the Czech Republic is going to open for the public Liechtenstein Palace at the Kampa, a historic palace built in the late 17th century, renovated in 1864. Liechtenstein Palace is one of the most beautiful and largest palaces in Prague. It´s used for representative purposes by The Office of the Government of the Czech Republic. On the second floor, there are apartments, in which stayed, for example, Spanish King Juan Carlos with his wife Sofie, British Queen Elisabeth II, Japanese Emperor Akihito with Empress Michiko. The halls and salons in the basement are used for working meetings and friendly gatherings. Between 1979 and 1991 the palace was renovated according to the project of architect B. Fuchse jr. and adapted to serve the purposes of the Government Presidium. The National Gallery Prague (NGP) opened a large exhibition French Impressionism: Masterpieces from the Ordrupgaard Collection with 60 works including Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Auguste Renoir, and Camille Pissarro on June 29 in the Kinsky Palace. The display will show also artistic overlaps with other artistic tendencies. Romantic painting will be represented by Eugène Delacroix and the realistic method by Gustave Courbet or the artists of the so-called Barbizon school, such as Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and Charles-François Daubigny. The outstanding works from the collection of sixty paintings will also include chef d’oeuvres by post-Impressionists Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin. Since autumn 2017, Ordrupgaard’s unique collection of French art has been touring outside the borders of Denmark. Prague Castle remains to be the most popular tourist destination in the Czech Republic, according to figures put together by Czech Tourism agency. Last year, it attracted over 2.4 million tourists, a nearly three-percent increase year-on-year. The first 3 tourist destinations in 2018: Prague Castle (2.4 million visitors) Petrin funicular (2.07 million visitors) Prague zoo (1.4 million visitors) While Prague Castle may be a given, some surprises made the diverse list of locations—which includes plenty of destinations beyond Prague—from the industrial sights of Dolní Vítkovice, to the zoo in Zlín and Aqualand Moravia. CzechTourism also released some other rankings, aside from the top 50 list. The most popular architectural site was Obecní dům (the Municipal House) in Prague. Legendary jazz pianist Herbie Hancock is coming to Prague’s O2 Universum on Nov. 9, 2019. Tickets go on sale May 24 at 9 am on the Ticketmaster network. Now 79 years old, Hancock has been at the forefront of jazz for almost six decades. He was seen as a child prodigy, playing a Mozart concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the age of 12. He started his adult career in 1961. Hancock’s output includes 41 studio albums, 12 live albums, five soundtracks and 62 compilation albums. One of his early soundtrack efforts was Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1966 art film Blow Up, which helped to boost is visibility. From 1963 to ’68, he was a member of one of the most influential jazz bands of history, Miles Davis’ Second Great Quintet, and one of the pioneers of the jazz avant-garde. Following this he began to explore a more electronic sound, working with various musicians and releasing albums under his own name. He was a founding member of the Headhunters, which formed in 1973. Danish heavy metal and rockabilly band Volbeat is coming to Prague’s 02 Universum on Oct. 31, with Baroness and Danko Jones as the opening acts. 02 Universum is a side space adjacent to O2 Arena. The downtown Prague cinema Kino Světozor is celebrating 15 years since it opened in 2004. The cinema, located just off of Wenceslas Square in Pasáž Světozor, has been offering art-house films, documentaries, and festivals. To mark the anniversary, the cinema will hold a festival from May 24 to 30 called Patnáct (Fifteen), with 13 of the most popular art films of recent years in terms of attendance, and two special events, for a total of 15. Only four films are English-friendly: Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, Lars von Trier’s Melancholia, Jim Jarmusch’s Paterson and Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom. The roof terraces of the Lucerna palace will be open every Monday and Sunday from 3 p.m. till dusk. The opening season starts this Sunday, May 20. Concerts, poetry evenings and other cultural events will take place on the roof of this historic building. Organizers will also open soon a cafe and garden, divided into five zones. Architect Petr Hájek, whose firm designed the new DOX gallery building, is behind the Lucerna rooftop reconstruction project. The whole building carrying distinctive elements of subsiding Art Nouveau and incoming Modernism has been finished in 1921 by Vácslav Havel (the grandfather of president Václav Havel). The program structure is going to be based on our main mission that is the support of community life, educational and public enlightenment activities, art in public space, the roof as a creative laboratory for the development of social innovations and preservation of cultural heritage. United Islands of Prague is an international multi-genre music festival that takes place in Prague each year. 2019 will mark the 16th annual edition of the event, which will welcome over 100 performers from more than 10 scenes. This year’s theme is the British Edition and visitors are encouraged to dress in the colors of the Union Jack. The festival focuses on young talented musicians and singers, who are supported by a few foreign and domestic stars. The Žižkov Tower is the subject of renewed complaints from the Prague Jewish community, which says it is a brooding reminder of the antisemitism of the regime that ruled former Czechoslovakia for more than 40 years and whose dark history needs to be officially recognized. “Part of our community is still present under the ground here and people should know about it,” said Pavel Vesely, a history and tourism coordinator with the Prague Jewish community. “It reflects our history in the second half of the 20th century, when there was pressure – part state-organized antisemitism, part anti-religion – to erase the remnants of a Jewish presence in Prague. And the communists did a thorough job because if you speak to people visiting the tower, they have no idea a Jewish cemetery was here.” The TV Tower stands on what was once Prague’s biggest Jewish cemetery, where rabbis, distinguished scholars and leading industrialists, among others, were laid to rest, while some graves remains were reburied in other cemeteries, others were reportedly dumped in a landfill site outside Prague, in violation of Jewish law forbidding the disinterment of buried bodies.
