Step aside Big Ben, Grand Central Clock, and assorted Rolex products: there’s a new chronographic monarch in town. Actually, it’s a far older timepiece dating back to 1410 on the Town Hall in Prague. This makes it the 600-year-old, undisputed title-holder of “Coolest Clock in the History of Ever.” “Elegant, sumptuous aesthetics meets timeless timekeeping mastery,” the ad might read. Prague’s Astronomical Clock, more properly the “Orloj”, is a stunning engineering marvel. From the outside, it looks like a color-coded, multi-layered, brightly painted clock-face of golden whorls and arcane symbolism. Inside, it’s a brain-bustlingly convoluted mechanism of endlessly churning weights, pulleys, ropes, and gears. As a multifunctional medieval astrolabe, it tracks “Old Czech Time” (from when the sun sets) using ancient Gothic numerals, the Sun’s intersection with zodiacal signs using Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, etc.), and “sidereal” hours using Roman numerals (our actual, uncorrected “day” of 23 hours, 56 minutes). Vesna to Represent the Czech Republic in Eurovision 2023

Last week, fans from all over the world could vote for their favourite song in ESCZ, the Czech national final. The votes from the international and Czech audiences have been counted, and Vesna has won with “My Sister’s Crown”. The winning song was through 100% public voting consisting of 70% international and 30% Czech. The artists performed on January 30th in the first live televised national final in 15 years. Vesna is a band based in Prague, led by singer, composer and lyricist Patricie Fuxová. The permanent members of the band come from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Russia. Bulgarian rapper Tanita Yankova and Ukrainian musician Kateryna Vatchenko also feature on the song “My Sister’s Crown”. Their music includes elements of folklore combined with contemporary pop. The group has so far released two albums, and in 2019 they were nominated for an Anděl Award. They’ve also opened for Norwegian singer Aurora. On This Day in 1342: Prague’s Medieval Judith Bridge Collapsed

An iconic part of the city’s landscape, it has been a star in international movies, the location for many photoshoots, and it is an absolute must-see sight for tourists. However, the Charles Bridge is a relatively modern addition to Prague compared to the city’s history. Considering that the Prague Castle was built in the 9th century, Charles Bridges’ 1357 birth year means that Prague was without it for almost as long as it has existed. In the 10th century, there are some references to a wooden bridge. However, Vladislav II had a stone bridge built around 1170 and named it Judith’s Bridge. This bridge existed until February 3rd, 1342 when it was destroyed by flood. The bridge not only got the name of educated and energetic wife of Vladislav, Judith of Thuringia, but she probably also had merit in the actual building of the bridge. The beautiful Romanesque bridge had twenty arches and stood at a shorter height than the current Charles Bridge.
