Czechs aren’t known for being the most optimistic bunch, but most are satisfied with their lives, a poll conducted in November by CVVM showed. Some 71% are mostly satisfied with their personal relationships, the feeling of security and the standard of living. Uncertainty for the future remains a significant concern for Czech citizens, the study has found, with over 70% of respondents claiming that 2020 did not amount to a strengthening of justice in Czech society. Satisfaction with life received a rating of 7.13 among Czechs, on a scale from zero to ten. In June, the same evaluation reached a total of 7.38, in May 7.33. The highest level of satisfaction is expressed by people over the age of 65, while young people aged 18 to 24 value their lives the worst. Similar polls have been conducted monthly since 2003 and have mainly shown overall satisfaction. The current economic situation in the Czech Republic is assessed as good by 23 percent of people, 33 percent perceive it as bad and 42 percent do not consider it either good or bad. The Czech Republic has allowed squeezing an extra dose from COVID-19 vaccine vials supplied by Pfizer and BioNTech, taking advantage of an extra reserve amount put into the vials by the maker, the Health Ministry said. Under standard rules, five doses can be drawn from each vial of the vaccine, but experts have said it is possible to obtain a sixth or even seventh dose from the vials. PM Andrej Babis had asked the European Commission earlier this week to allow using the extra amount. The vaccine, made by Pfizer of the United States and the German biotech startup BioNTech, is the only one to win EU approval so far. Blažek, famous Czech brand for menswear, has filed for insolvency. The company registers more than 150 creditors for a total debt of almost 87 million CZK. As iHNED.cz reports, the company’s founder is considering the entry of a new investor. The company became insolvent from the forced closure of stores during the first and second waves of the epidemic. Like many retailers, Blažek was already struggling with the shift to online shopping even before the pandemic struck this spring. The Czech Republic reported a record high 16,329 daily cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday. The percentage of positive cases compared to the number of tests is also a new record: 48.5 percent. On Tuesday, the laboratories performed 33,642 tests, about 5,000 more than on Monday. There are 105,710 active cases currently, the highest since early November. The number of hospitalized patients is at 5,712, the highest since November 20. 826 are in critical condition. In recent days, the virus has spread the most in the Rychnov region, with 683 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the past seven days. Hradec Králové and Opava also have over 600 coronavirus cases per 100,000 inhabitants, while Karlovy Vary, Pilsen and Vysočina have the lowest PES score. European Union governments approved on Tuesday a trade deal regulating relations between the 27-nation bloc and Britain, paving the way for its provisional application from January 1, Foreign Minister Tomáš Petříček told the news agency ČTK. The deal, which preserves Britain’s zero-tariff and zero-quota access to the EU’s single market of 450 million consumers, was reached on December 24, 4-1/2 years after Britons voted by a slim margin in a referendum to leave the bloc. The approval is a formality after a deal between London and the EU last week. It is needed for the provisional application of the trade agreement from next year before it is ratified by the European Parliament by the end of February. A strong earthquake in central Croatia has killed at least six people, injured many and caused a significant destruction in Petrinja, a town southeast of the capital Zagreb. The Croatian Mountain Rescue Service said that rescuers from across Croatia had travelled to Petrinja to help with the search and recovery effort. On New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, there will be a nationwide ban on gatherings. Setting off fireworks will not be banned but authorities are asking that people refrain from doing so. Mass events On New Year’s Eve, families, and friends traditionally gather to celebrate the end of the year. But this will not be possible this year, because only two people who are not from the same family can gather. Alcohol consumption There will be a ban on alcohol consumption in public places. The Czech Ministry of Health will launch a unified register of residents who have received the vaccine. According to the former Minister of Health and former chairman of the Czech Vaccinological Society, large mass events will not take place until June 2021.
