Oscar-winning Czech film director Jiří Menzel has died aged 82 after battling serious health problems for a long time, his wife Olga Menzelová said on Sunday.
The Czech Republic’s daily number of new coronavirus cases rose to 650, the highest since the pandemic reached the country in March, Health Ministry data showed on Thursday. With that number, the overall count of cases rose to 25,773 in the country of 10.7 million. From Tuesday, September 1, new emergency measures against the spread of coronavirus came into force. Face masks will be again mandatory in medical facilities, offices, all means of public transport, railway stations and polling stations. Moreover, Czechs will have to put on the famous roušky at Prague Airport and at public events where there are more than 100 people. For now, restaurants, and workspaces are excluded from the measure, although regulations might still change in the coming weeks. A member of the Czech Republic backroom staff has tested positive for coronavirus ahead of their game with Scotland on Monday. The infected person has “immediately left the team hotel and entered quarantine”, the statement said, while the rest of the players and staff were re-tested and all returned negative results. Josef Prokeš, a driver for the Brno Municipal Transit Authority, objected recently to driving a city bus displaying a campaign advertisement for the “Freedom and Direct Democracy” (SPD) movement with the slogan “For Healthy Schools Without Inclusion”. He refused to drive the vehicle as long as the advertisement, which features the bigoted slogan and the faces of the chair of the movement, Czech MP Tomio Okamura, and the party’s candidate for the Czech Senate, Tomáš Andrle, was in place. The driver said he considers the slogan an attack on his children. “It may be all the same to the company what people – children – their vehicles are attacking, but I’m sorry, it’s not all the same to me. Czech Senate speaker Milos Vystrcil invoked a famous Cold War-era phrase by late US president John F. Kennedy as he delivered a landmark speech to Taiwan’s parliament Tuesday during a visit that has incensed Beijing. Czech President Milos Zeman has been discharged from hospital on Saturday, where he underwent hand surgery after an injury on Wednesday night. Zeman broke his right arm on Tuesday night after falling. “In the evening, the president watched television news and after the end, he did not use the support in the form of a stick nor the help of security, he tripped and broke his right arm,” said Zeman’s spokesman, Jiří Ovčáček. At the beginning of September, the Castle planned a presidential visit to South Moravian Region as Zeman was to start the school year at an event at a secondary school in Rajhrad. “We will solve that next week,” said Ovčáček, however, he is rather skeptical about making a three-day visit to the region. “It’s not even a general state of health, but of course if you have a broken arm and it is fixed, it causes discomfort,” the spokesman said, adding that convalescence is now a priority. In a follow-up report on the Czech Republic, the Council of Europe’s anti-money laundering body MONEYVAL concludes that the country has improved measures to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, but still needs to make progress in certain areas. Since the adoption of its mutual evaluation report in December 2018, the Czech Republic is reporting to MONEYVAL on an expedited timetable due to the high number of deficiencies identified in several key areas. The follow-up carried out by MONEYVAL has examined a range of legislative, regulatory, and institutional measures implemented by the Czech Republic to address these deficiencies. MONEYVAL notes progress and assigns the Czech Republic higher international compliance ratings in three key areas: the improvement of mechanisms for national cooperation and coordination to tackle money laundering and terrorism financing (ML/TF); the strengthening of countermeasures against countries and jurisdictions which represent a high ML/TF risk; and the removing of regulatory gaps for correspondent banking relationships, which will ensure greater transparency for bank-to-bank transactions. Travelers arriving from Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Jamaica will have to quarantine from 4 am on Saturday, the UK government has announced. The new restrictions are coming into force in a bid to stem the spread of coronavirus.
