Back in April of this year, Kohoutek opened its doors in Prague, ready to treat restaurant-goers to a new and distinct menu immersed in Italian tradition. Forget pizza and pasta. Kohoutek has introduced cockerel – which is a young, male rooster – to the Czech Republic. For years cockerel has been a favourite food among families in northern Italy, but it is not traditionally served as part of Czech cuisine. The founder of Kohoutek, Fabio, moved to the Czech Republic 15 years ago with the intent to eventually share the quintessential tastes of his region, Brescia. He knew that cockerel would be unfamiliar to the people here, but since his venture began, it has been thriving. Cooking the cockerel is a long and delicate process, but it is totally worth it to achieve the succulent taste. Alberto Vitale, executive manager at Kohoutek, broke it down for us. “We marinate the product for more than 48 hours, using more than 12 different spices. Czech Airlines (CSA) will substantially expand its services for the next summer season. Its summer flight schedule will offer scheduled flights to 15 destinations in 14 countries as the airline is resuming traditional services that it had to discontinue due to the coronavirus pandemic. Flight tickets are available in all distribution channels. Next summer, CSA will fly again from Prague to Brussels, Barcelona, Madrid, Rome, Amsterdam, Helsinki, Bucharest, Malta, and Iceland. CSA is also reintroducing regular flights between Prague and Sofia, Bulgaria, 10 years after the service was discontinued in March 2012. The airline will continue operating regular flights to Paris, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Moscow, and Kyiv. In the hopes to reduce food waste, scientists from the Faculty of Agriculture (FA) of Mendel University in Brno brew classic Czech lager from unsold hardened bread. Since starting this project, they have prepared more than 30 lager recipes, as well as several other recipes for top-fermented beers. “Even uneaten bread is a waste in a way. By no means does this mean any soiled or moldy bread, but hardened bread that has not been sold, ” Milan Geršl of the Institute of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Engineering AF, said. Procedures adapted from the American and British methods of beer brewing inspired the researchers for this project. However, in these other methods, different types of pastry are used, resulting in a beer that is very different from the classic Czech brew. The researchers, therefore, aimed to prepare a recipe for classic Czech lager, which could be cooked from various types of bread. In the project, beer is created in two ways. On Monday, Nov. 15, partial measures against the spread of coronavirus will come into effect in the Czech Republic. Testing Healthcare workers who work in inpatient wards and are not vaccinated against Covid-19 must be tested at least once a week. The validity of the tests for visits to social care facilities is also being shortened. An antigen test is now valid for one day and the PCR three days. France has tightened restrictions on unvaccinated visitors from several European countries as the continent sees a new surge in COVID-19 cases. Unvaccinated travelers from Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary and Greece need to show a negative PCR test taken within 24 hours of their departure for France, according to the new rules announced late Friday. On December 1, one of the most popular ice skating rinks in Prague will reopen to the public. Like last year, the entrance is for free. There will be two skating rinks on the Letná Plain this year – a large one with a size of 40 x 20 meters and a smaller children’s rink size 22 x 10 meters. The ice-skating rink and the facilities will be illuminated after dark. The cooling unit retains the rink cool even in case of the outdoor temperature of +15 degrees. The Czech Health Ministry officially announced on Twitter that restaurants and organisers of mass events will not be able to accept antigen tests as proof of being negative for COVID-19. Only PCR tests would be accepted. In addition to PCR tests, confirmation of vaccination, as well as proof or recovery from COVID-19, will also be recognized. The new measures should be effective from 29 November. The outgoing Prime Minister Andrej Babiš shared that President Miloš Zeman would like him to run for the presidential post. On Wednesday evening, November 17, a flying drone show will take place in the center of Prague. November 17 is one of the landmark dates in modern Czech history. On October 28, 1918, an independent Czechoslovak state was declared just a few weeks before the end of World War I. On November 17, 1989, the state was, once again, independent – this time, free of Communist rule. Dozens of drones will rise into the air over the Vltava River to line up in various inscriptions and symbols of the Czech Republic. The show will start at 18:30. The Czech government is requiring children to get tested for COVID-19 as part of efforts to curtail a recent steep rise in cases. All elementary and high schools are required to test the 1.4 million students in two waves on Nov. 22 and Nov. 29, Education Minister Robert Plaga said. Medical experts recommended the mass testing. These are the best Czech young wines of the season, chosen by professional tasters and specialists of the Wine Foundation of the Czech Republic. This organization owns the Svatomartinské víno trademark. Every year, hundreds of producers fight for the right to use it, sending samples of young wines for review. If the drink meets strict quality standards, then it is labeled a St. Martin’s wine for one year. The tradition of “tasting selection” and the name itself originated in the 18th century. During the reign of Emperor Joseph II, on St. Martin’s Day, vineyard owners approached winemakers for them to taste new wines. The winemakers would then decide whether to renew their contract for another year or to hire other specialists. In 2021, 328 wines from 80 producers were tested for quality. In total, about 2.2 million bottles entered the market.
