Every year, the Czech Philharmonic concludes its season outside the Rudolfinum with a traditional open-air free concert on Hradčanské Square. On June 24th, against the backdrop of Prague Castle, the orchestra will perform an engaging program ranging from film music to famous classical works, under the baton of conductor Alain Altinoglu. The evening’s soloist will be Marek Kozák, with Marek Eben serving as the narrator. The event will begin at 8:15 p.m. and is expected to run for approximately 70 minutes. The evening will open with Alfred Newman’s famous 20th Century Fox Fanfare, followed by selections from Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s score for The Sea Hawk, arranged by Patrick Russ. The concert will also feature the Largo from Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, From the New World, the opening movement of George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F, and Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. Organizers will provide around 700 seats, primarily reserved for seniors, people with disabilities, and expectant mothers. Other visitors will be able to enjoy the performance while seated on the surrounding cobblestones and grassy areas or by standing throughout the concert. The performance will go ahead regardless of weather conditions. Attendees are encouraged to bring umbrellas...
Football fans in Prague will have several options to watch the Czech Republic’s World Cup matches, even when kick-off times fall in the early hours of the morning. The Czech team begins its tournament campaign against South Korea on Friday at 4 a.m. Central European Time. To accommodate supporters, a number of pubs, sports bars and restaurants across the capital plan to open outside their regular business hours, offering live screenings along with breakfast service. The 2026 FIFA World Cup gets underway on June 11 with hosts Mexico facing South Africa. The Czech Republic will then meet South Africa on June 18 at 6 p.m., before taking on Mexico on June 25 in another early-morning fixture scheduled for 3 a.m. Several Prague venues say they expect strong demand throughout the tournament, particularly for matches involving the Czech national team. Restaurant and Sportbar U Zábranských (Křižíkova 89, Karlín) plans to show every World Cup match on large screens and televisions. The venue will open one hour before each Czech national team match, regardless of the time. The management of Letenský Tulipán (M. Horákové 384/83, Holešovice) said interest extends beyond Czech matches and includes games featuring other nations competing in the tournament....
A fleet of 130 historic automobiles will roll out from Prague this week as the revived 1000 Czechoslovak Miles returns for another edition. The event, which follows the route between Prague and Bratislava before returning to the Czech capital, has once again reached its maximum capacity. Organizers say interest from owners far exceeded the number of available places. Among this year’s participants are 67 vehicles built by former Czechoslovak manufacturers, along with five cars that competed in the original long-distance race held during the 1930s. Seventeen international crews from Slovakia and Germany are also expected to take part. According to event director Jiří Patočka, one of the entries attracting attention this year is a vehicle owned by British motoring journalist and television presenter Richard Hammond. Vehicle inspections and registration will take place on Wednesday afternoon on Opletalova Street outside the headquarters of the Autoclub of the Czech Republic. The ceremonial start is scheduled for Thursday morning. The first car to leave the starting line will be a Jawa Minor from the collection of the National Technical Museum, driven by an all-female crew. Organizers expect the participants to return to Prague on Saturday, with the finish planned in front of the...

World-renowned Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa has unveiled his new permanent sculpture NEST in Prague, installed at the Bořislavka intersection near Evropská Avenue in front of the Artium art space. The 4.5-metre bronze and white-painted work marks a rare example of a major international public artwork permanently placed in the Czech capital. The installation was initiated by Valea Art and is intended to bring a moment of calm to one of Prague’s busiest transport corridors. Plensa, born in Barcelona in 1955, is known for large-scale public sculptures installed in cities including Chicago, London, Madrid, Jersey City and Taipei. His works often explore the human figure and perception in urban space. Prague previously hosted his work during an exhibition at Jan Palach Square in 2009. “I wanted to create a symbolic bridge between the building and society,” Plensa said about the project. NEST depicts an elongated girl’s head held in a pair of human hands. The figure, a signature motif in Plensa’s work, is designed to shift in perception depending on distance — appearing unified from afar and more fragile up close. The artist describes the head as a space of thought, dreams and imagination. Curator Linda K. Sedláková from Valea Art...
Direct trains from Czech Republic to Europe are expanding as demand for international rail travel continues to grow. A new direct service between Prague and Copenhagen launched in early May from Prague’s main railway station. The route is currently operating in a testing phase with one train per day in each direction. From June 14, frequency will increase to three daily services. The train stops along the way in Ústí nad Labem, Dresden, Berlin and Hamburg, offering a long but continuous connection between Central Europe and the Danish capital. According to Czech Railways, planned infrastructure improvements in Germany will also shorten travel times. A break in traffic between Berlin and Hamburg is expected to end on June 13, which should reduce the overall journey by around 40 minutes. The full trip from Prague to Copenhagen is expected to take approximately 11 hours and 45 minutes once the service is stabilised. Rail connections to the Adriatic Sea are also returning this summer. Czech Railways, in cooperation with Poland’s PKP Intercity, is relaunching the Adriatic Express. The service runs from Warsaw through Ostrava towards the Slovenian port city of Koper and Rijeka in Croatia. Capacity has been increased compared to last year...
Hermanos Gutiérrez, a guitar duo formed by brothers Alejandro and Estevan Gutiérrez with Swiss-Ecuadorian roots, will perform in Prague for the first time on August 20, 2026 at Lucerna Great Hall. Their music blends Latin American influences with a modern, atmospheric sound, built around the interplay of two guitars that create detailed, cinematic soundscapes full of emotion and depth. Get your ticket here. The duo has built a reputation for their distinctive instrumental style, where melody and rhythm intertwine without the need for vocals. Their live performances are known for their intimate yet expansive atmosphere, often described as immersive journeys rather than traditional concerts. Their latest album, Sonido Cósmico (2024), continues this direction with a deep musical exploration of rich sonic textures. The record carries elements of Latin mysticism and hypnotic guitar patterns, shaped in collaboration with producer Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. Under his production, Hermanos Gutiérrez expand their sound while keeping the minimalist core that defines their identity. Beyond the music itself, Hermanos Gutiérrez’s work reflects a strong connection between family, cultural heritage, and artistic exploration. The brothers often describe their creative process as a shared language shaped by years of playing together. Each concert becomes a...
The Czech Republic is set for one of its most demanding fixtures at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where it will face Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, recently renamed Estadio Banorte. The match is scheduled for June 25 at 03:00 local time and will take place in a stadium widely regarded as one of football’s most historic venues. The Azteca is the only stadium to have hosted two World Cup finals and will once again be part of the tournament schedule as the competition marks its 60th anniversary. Located on the outskirts of Mexico City, the stadium has been central to some of football’s most defining moments. It hosted the 1970 World Cup semi-final between Italy and West Germany, often referred to as the “match of the century.” Sixteen years later, it became the stage for Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” goal and his second strike against England in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final, later known as the “Goal of the Century.” Earlier still, Pelé lifted the World Cup trophy there with Brazil in 1970. These events are still commemorated inside the stadium with dedicated plaques. Beyond its sporting legacy, the Estadio Azteca is also an engineering...
Preparatory work for the second phase of Prague Metro Line D has already started, with full construction set to begin in the second half of June. The new metro line could begin operating in around six years. The opening timeline depends on the pace of preparations and the completion of procurement processes. The initial operational segment may run either between Pankrác and Nové Dvory or extend further to Písnice. The first section of Line D, connecting Pankrác and Olbrachtova, is already largely structurally complete. Concrete works are still being finalized inside the stations as part of finishing construction phases. Construction on this first segment began in 2022. Progress on the extension toward Písnice was delayed due to repeated complaints filed with the Czech Office for the Protection of Competition regarding procurement procedures. The main construction site will be located in Písnice near the Kunratická spojka, with work planned to proceed from the south. The preferred scenario is to open the entire section between Pankrác and Písnice at once. If that proves unfeasible, operations would initially start only between Pankrác and Nové Dvory. Technical systems such as tracks, electrical infrastructure, ventilation and safety equipment are planned to be installed across both...
After several years on Letná Plain, Prague Pride is moving its Saturday’s Pride Park from Letná Plain to Štvanice Island. The festival runs from August 3 to 9 and brings together cultural events, human rights programming and public discussions. This year’s theme, “Times Are Changing,” runs through the entire week. The main Saturday program, Pride Park, will now take place on Štvanice Island. Until now, Letná had served as the central gathering point, offering wide open space and views over the city. Organisers say the new location changes the atmosphere in a practical way as well as in tone. They point to the island’s greenery, natural shade and more contained layout as key reasons for the move. The idea, according to them, is to create a setting that feels less exposed and more connected. “It is more intimate, greener and more community-oriented. It is an island in the middle of the city, where queer participants and their allies can create a safe space,” said festival director Kamila Fröhlichová. The change of venue is also being presented in a broader context. Fröhlichová said the decision reflects shifts in public debate and social attitudes over the past year. “The atmosphere in the...

Japanese clothing retailer Uniqlo has selected a prominent location in central Prague for its long-awaited entry into the Czech market. The company will open its first Czech store in Hybernia Palace at Náměstí Republiky 3, one of the capital’s busiest commercial areas. According to information published by iDNES.cz, the retailer has already signed a lease agreement for the property. The opening, however, is still several years away, with the project expected to be completed no earlier than the first quarter of 2028. The future store will occupy approximately 7,700 square meters spread across four retail floors within Hybernia Palace. The move marks another step in Uniqlo’s European expansion strategy. While the company continues to grow globally, executives have repeatedly identified Europe as one of its most promising markets. “In Europe, where we see enormous potential, our growth is significantly faster than in Japan or the United States,” Taku Morikawa, who leads the company’s European operations, recently told Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung. Founded in Hiroshima in 1984, Uniqlo has evolved from a single-store operation into one of the world’s largest apparel retailers. The company now operates thousands of stores internationally, including more than 1,000 locations in China and over 100...
