DJ SHADOW — A Mix Master Maestro Returns to Prague

DJ Shadow is a pioneering hip-hop turntablist and producer merging electronica with hip-hop and practically no limits to other genres in his creations. He returns to Prague, since his last appearance in 2012, and with once again a newer sound.

Since 1991 his finesse originally as a master turntablist and sampler (jazz, rock, funk, etc.) has evolved over the years, so beyond the term mix-master, he could be called a post-modern channeler through his music incorporating multi-genre musicians, spoken word, rappers, vocalists and of course, still based on a myriad of samples up his sleeve. His earliest singles were described by UK music critics with a fresh term (genre) – they called it “trip-hop” to describe this new direction of slow psychedelia influenced hip-hop for labels Mo’Wax and Ninja Tune. However, his album “Action Adventure” (2023) is light years from this sound. The album cover is a 007-Kung Fu spoof with an Asian assassin-spy, knife in hand, and some of the tunes are in synch with it as if made for video games with high-speed or upbeat melodies; there is some downtime (deep and eerie beats for the hip-hop minded) between high-flying or lush electronica and dance-pop. 20 Years in the EU: Join the Celebration with United Islands of Prague Festival!

The festival season will kick off this year in Prague right at the beginning of May. Wednesday, May 1st, will be dedicated to celebrating Europe on the islands in the center of Prague. Karlín, an Ancient Neighborhood With a Young Spirit

Karlin is a neighborhood located in the heart of Prague, known for its charming architecture, picturesque streets, and vibrant culture. The district of Karlín was founded in 1817 in the countryside, just outside the Old Town, and was named in honour of Caroline Charlotte Augusta of Bavaria, wife of the Austrian Emperor Francis I. Man in Prague Unable to Leave Home Due to Rogue Ram

A resident of Prague 14 district found himself in a peculiar situation on Thursday, unable to leave his home due to an unexpected obstacle: a ram blocking his doorway. The man contacted authorities after the ram with imposing horns refused to move, stationed itself in front of the resident’s gate, steadfastly refusing to yield. “In the afternoon, a sturdy-hoofed animal stood in front of his gate and refused to budge. As time passed, it became increasingly clear that the individual wasn’t selling pots, preaching the word of God, or fighting for the climate. To avoid a deadlock, the caller decided to report the matter to police,” said police spokesperson Irena Seifertová. Officers on the scene quickly assessed the situation and contacted the animal control service. Using specialized techniques, the animal control team successfully captured the ram and transported it unharmed to the Troja animal shelter.

On This Day in 1824: Czech Music Composer Bedřich Smetana is Born

On March 2, 2024, Czechs celebrate the bicentenary of Bedřich Smetana’s birth, Czech music composer, founder of the Czech national music and author of the symphony “My Country”. Smetana not only defined the musical identity of Czechia, but his work, especially “The Bartered Bride”, touched the audience all over the world. Born in Litomyšl, Eastern Bohemia, Smetana displayed musical talent from an early age, receiving his first music lessons from his father before later moving to Prague to study. Prague’s Farmers’ Markets Return for 2024 Season

From the beginning of March, residents of Prague can enjoy the return of their favorite farmers’ markets in most districts. The season kicks off on Saturday, March 2nd, at Vítězné náměstí in Prague 6. Prague’s Famous Spinning Sculpture Set to Return on Thursday

The reconstruction of the moving sculpture depicting the head of famous author Franz Kafka, located by the Quadrio shopping centre, has been successfully completed. The city has announced that it will put it back with an official re-unveiling to take place on 29 February at 7 PM at Piazza Quadrio shopping centre. There will be a spectral light show and original music. It took a total of five months to repair David Černý’s work. “Each of the 42 rotating panels the sculpture is comprised of underwent necessary maintenance work. Our technicians replaced the rotating mechanism of each panel individually. It is now equipped with a more modern technical solution that will ensure a longer service life and easier maintenance,” shared Alex Černý, executive director of DEUS Automation, which carried out the repair. Prague residents and visitors can once again look forward to the 15-minute rotation of the statue, which takes place once every hour. “We are very pleased that this demanding repair was successful and that the bust is going back to where it belongs, and in even better shape,” said František Šlapák, asset manager at CPI Property Group. Apartments, Offices, and Retail to Replace Brutalist Transgas Building

Plans are progressing for a new development on the site of the former Transgas building in Prague’s Vinohrady district. The brutalist building, designed by architect Václav Aulický, was demolished in 2020. Developers expect to receive a zoning permit by the end of 2024, with construction potentially starting in the summer of 2025. The project, a collaboration between Penta and PSN, is estimated to cost around CZK 2 billion and could be completed by mid-2027. “Over the past six months, the site has been prepared and utilities have been relocated,” said spokesperson Martin Lánský. However, a new construction law introduced in July 2023 could potentially impact timelines. The winning design for the new development, by Jakub Cigler Architects, features a mix of apartments, offices, and retail space. The complex will be similar to the original Transgas building in form, a semi-closed block with a central open space.
