Public transport in the Czech Republic will be greatly reduced on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. On 31st December 2018, metro runs a normal service, extended until 02:30 with the interval of 10 minutes. Trams run a normal service during the day until 20:00. From 20:00-07:00 night trams run in 20-minute intervals. The Funicular Railway at Petrin operates 09:00-22:00. On January 1st, 2019, metro and trams run a Sunday service: metro trains in 6-8 minute intervals plus regular trams. The Funicular Railway at Petrin operates a normal service. From 4 pm to 6.30 pm following roads will be closed for cars: Dvořákovo nábř. in the section Štefánikův most – nám. Jana Palacha nábř. Yesterday Cardinal Dominik Duka welcomed people who are homeless, impoverished, isolated and refugees to the Archbishop’s Palace for a traditional Christmas lunch. Shared seating for 300 guests at the Christmas Day lunch was organized for the 20th year in a row by the lay Catholic movement Community of Sant’Egidio; the community organized Christmas lunches in 70 countries worldwide yesterday for a total of 260 000 impoverished and isolated people. The menu included beef stock with liver dumplings, roast duck and beef in cream sauce, and Christmas cookies. Each guest received a Christmas present such as a coat, socks, or a warm scarf and everyone received personal hygiene supplies. He clinked a glass of champagne with the guests and shook hands with all of them. “I wish you quiet and peace in soul, inner calm and reconciliation. When walking the streets of Prague city center I feel like I’m juggling two different worlds. One world is very busy, with shiny and colorful windows and full of people. But just one step can throw you into a quiet street with just a few random searching for the first world or locals running somewhere they need to be. Like Zlatá ulice. I want to invite you to walk one street you might not even see from each of these worlds. I am not worried it will turn into the rough touristic street because there is simply nothing tempting for business and it has one specialty – it closes at dusk and opens at dawn. Let’s check Zlatá ulice, or in English, Golden street. (Do not mistake for Golden Lane, the rather picturesque street in the Prague Castle.) Czech Airlines (ČSA) will terminate flights on their regular routes between Prague and Ostrava, Prague and Bratislava, and Bratislava and Košice, its spokesperson Daniel Šabík confirmed. “The main reason for the end of the operation on regular lines is the lack of capacity of the corresponding type of aircraft,” said Šabík, adding that it makes no economic sense to operate larger aircraft. However, the flights between Prague and Košice remain unchanged, Šabík said. The last flights on the soon-to-be canceled routes are scheduled for January 11, 2019. As of Tuesday (December 11), 16 million passengers have been cleared in the Václav Havel Prague Airport this year. It is estimated that 16.8 million passengers will be cleared by the end December. This is a 9 percent year-on-year growth of passengers at the airport and exceeds previous records of annual foot traffic in the airport. The airport plans to expand through several new investments within the next year. This year, the airport accommodated approximately 46,000 passengers a day. Václav Havel Airport has long been the fastest growing airport in Europe in the category of 10 million to 25 million passengers and is growing faster than the European average of similar-sized airports, airports experts noted. Winter is coming—err, liquor is coming, too. A new Game of Thrones’ pop-up bar opened up in the Karlin district. White Walker Bar has a very limited run: now until Dec. 23. And, it’s only open Wednesday through Sunday 2 p.m. to 10 p.m on Sokolovská across the street from Karlínské náměstí. Everything is Game-of-Thrones themed, as the bar is named after the zombie antagonists from the HBO show. A giant icy blue gar and frosted Johnnie Walker figure dressed up as the Night King from the show greet customers when they enter. The bar transformed itself into the North-of-the-Wall sets. Top bartenders, on-brand decorations and high-quality drinks are promised, as they have five special themed cocktails. Each drink uses the limited-edition Johnnie Walker White Walker whisky which is a scotch that has nods of caramel and vanilla. The special batch is brewed in Cardhu and Clynelish (two of Scotland’s northernmost distilleries). Looks like they’re King of the North. Prague City has unveiled its selection a new design of the transport shelters and railings. The designers of the winning design are Michal Froněk, Jan Němeček, Aleš Kachlík and Martin Klanica. The first test prototypes will be installed in October 2019. “We want a modern metropolis. Ordinary, but very visible items such as waste bins, benches and transport shelters are an integral part of a modern metropolis,” commented Jan Chabr, City Councilor for Asset Management. “Prague has historically spent a disproportionate amount of money on maintaining such items, and the winning design of the transit stop was also able to take this into account. I am pleased that these things are now really being handled professionally.” The task of the negotiation was to design a shelter that is functional, high quality and attractive, with a universal and timeless design. The jury also considered the ease of maintenance and susceptibility to vandalism. The new shelters will not only be an esthetic improvement but will also significantly reduce operating and maintenance costs. Articles about parks are some of my favorite on any Spotted by Locals site. I need to balance the rush of the city with some fresh air. Obora Hvězda is just perfect for that. Beside other parks in the wider center of Prague, Obora Hvězda has a very forest character. But central part hides beautiful renaissance summer palace, and you might suddenly feel very aristocratic walking around. The summer palace was build in the 16th century and has an interesting six-pointed star shape. It’s very noticeable from the airplane by the way! Rumour has it that it was built out of love and given to the beloved lady of Ferdinand II. (Tirol), a gentleman from the Habsburg monarchy who was responsible for Czech lands at the time. It hosts exhibitions, but it’s closed in winter. The park itself is accessible all year long and is actually loved by locals for cross-country skiing. I used to ski there myself when I was little! Well, those winters were much whiter as the majority of Czech senior citizens would say. Prague´s New Year´s Eve fireworks display 2019 along the river Vltava is a hugely popular event and will take place in January, 1st from 6 pm and the city will pay about Kč 1 million. The best locations to watch fireworks: Prague bridges (Čechův, Manes, Stefanikuv) Dvorak’s waterfront Pařížská street Petřín hill Letná Riegrovy sady Vítkov The entire fireworks display will take 10 minutes 47 seconds and will include music and laser show. The theme of the fireworks show is dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. Uber rival Taxify has ordered its drivers to halt all Prague rides until the app meets the conditions required from a regular taxi service. Taxify, which offered a cheap alternative to Uber with promises of better pay and conditions for drivers, confirmed it had “temporarily stopped” operations in order to clarify its position with the transport authority. The Estonian company, which has spread across Europe since it was founded in 2013, said it already had a fleet of several hundred drivers in Prague and it charges an average 15 per cent commission for drivers, according to its website. “Our pricing system is the same as our competitors,” one help note for drivers says. Taxify may still appeal the verdict. Taxify considers itself as more a tech startup than a taxi company and aims to attract customers who got fond of Uber. Taxify sets rules of behaviour for their drivers, with strict protocols for how to greet passengers. Prague’s Department of Public Transportation (DPP) has decorated a tram with Christmas lights and an angel on its flatbed back. It will alternately serve routes 9 and 10 until January 6, 2019. It’s a Škoda 15T, decked out with more than 9 thousand lights, attached to the vehicle by the employees from the Motol garage. Prague City Tourism estimates that there will be a total number of 650,000 visitors in Prague this December, of which up to 280,000 will arrive in the capital to celebrate Christmas and the New Year. Another 80,000 visitors are expected to come to the city only for one day to see the markets and go Christmas shopping. “This December, especially during the Christmas and New Year period, we expect Prague to bring in a record number of visitors. We do not expect to see a significant increase in the total number of visitors, however, but we are expecting the number of Czech visitors from other parts of the Czech Republic to rise by 10% compared to last December,” says the Prague City Tourism spokesman, Barbora Hrubá. Europeans are the biggest group of visitors to Prague, with French, Italian, Austrian, Slovakian, British, and Russian visitors making up the majority.
