Circus Festival Letní Letná in Full Swing

The 17th edition of the Letní Letná International Festival of Contemporary Circus and Theatre began on Tuesday 18 August. “We cooperate with the Prague hygiene station and follow the recommendations of experts. Based on a government decision, we have reduced the capacity of the circus tent to 500 people, where it will also be obligatory to have the nose and mouth covered with a mask,” says Jiří Turek, director of the Letní Letná festival. Other measures are communicated by the organizers on the festival website. The foreign ensemble – Galapiat Cirque from France – returns to Letní Letná after eight years. And straight with a world premiere. ShanghaiRanking Consultancy has published the 2020 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), listing the top 1000 institutions globally – featuring 7 from the Czech Republic. Starting from 2003, ARWU has been presenting the world top universities annually based on a set of objective indicators and third-party data. ARWU has been recognized as the precursor of global university rankings and the most trustworthy league table. ARWU adopts six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, the number of Highly Cited Researchers and articles indexed in Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index based on data in the Web of Science, and per capita performance. September 19: Prague International Indie Film Festival

Filmmakers from all around the world get together in the city for a special day for the award ceremony. Prague International Indie Film Festival is an event with an annual gala, screening and award ceremony in Edison Filmhub, home of indie filmmakers located in the center of Prague. Flašinet žije! Tomorrow You Can Join the Barrel Organs Festival

The beginning of August traditionally belongs to the flute players in Prague. This year, the National Museum has already prepared the VII. year of the Flašinet žije! festival, which will take place on Tuesday, August 11, 2020. Street artists from various parts of the Czech Republic and Slovakia will enliven the center of Prague with three concerts of different genres. The festival will start at 10.00 with a concert in the church of St. Nicholas on the Old Town Square, where the Baroque church will resound with popular compositions of classical music. At 2 pm, improvised performances by flutists will be heard on Na Kampe Square near Charles Bridge. Barrel organ players will play their machines and passers-by will be able to see them from all sides. A barrel organ is a mechanical musical instrument made of bellows and one or more ranks of pipes, all typically housed in a whimsical, wooden case. Prague Unknown: The Ruins of Baba

The Baba ruins on a hill on the left bank of the Vltava River is a place of unclear origin with a unique and far view of Prague. There are several theories about the origin of the ruins. Supposedly it is the remains of a vineyard press from the 17th century from the vineyard that was located here. However, according to other sources, it is a ruin of a chapel, or a newer Romanesque building from the beginning of the 19th century, which was completed with Gothic-style windows. Baba is a part of city district Dejvice in Prague 6. It is situated on a rocky hill of the same name, some 264 – 267 m above the sea on the left bank of the Vltava River and next to the neighboring Hanspaulka. The name Baba has already been documented in the 15th century. The area was settled as early as in the Younger Stone Age, which is documented by numerous archaeological findings from the 1970’s. In the medieval era, the local area belonged to the settlement named Horní Šárka and there were vineyards here. September 19-20: Ride the Oldest Tram in Prague!

If you want to see what life was like in Prague at the turn of the 20th century, take a trip through the historic centre of town in a vintage tram! Prague residents and tourists will be able to ride the oldest city tram. The model car 88 was produced in 1900 during the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and ran through Prague streets until 1967. Prague Public Transport (DPP) organizes four trips – two on 19 September and two on the following day. The exact tram route will be published in the upcoming weeks. Kampa Museum to Reopen After Fire

The Kampa Museum, damaged by a fire on July 15, will reopen to the public today (July 31). Visitors can enjoy an exhibition of works by Alfons Mucha and Pasta Oner, as well as a permanent exhibition by František Kupka, a pioneer of modern abstract painting. The Minister of Culture Lubomír Zaorálek promised financial assistance. After visiting the museum at the beginning of last week, he stated that the Czech government will provide units of millions of crowns. It is necessary to re-install all air-conditioning systems and technical equipment in the museum’s facilities. “We have a long way to go before the Kampa Museum will be restored to its original condition,” said Jiri Pospisil, chairman of the Jan Mladek and Meda Mladkova Foundation. Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze, but had to evacuate pieces of art from an exhibition hall hit by the thick smoke. More than 100 people had to be evacuated from the museum and nearby buildings. One person needed medical treatment.
