Press freedom has improved in the Czech Republic according to this year’s Press Freedom Index, which now places the country 20th compared to the 40th spot it scored last year. The Press Freedom Index is an annual ranking of countries published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF). In 2021, the organisation warned against dramatic deterioration in access to information during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, with the end of the pandemic and the replacement of the former populist government, Czech media breathe a sigh of relief. The index was published on World Press Freedom Day (3 May). The country’s score registered a more modest increase from 76.62 in 2020 to 80.54 in 2021 out of a possible 100. “We will not restrict any media in their activities and we will not hinder any journalists in their work,” Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said in a statement, admitting that many journalists work in challenging economic conditions. “The practices of restricting participation in press conferences, limiting access to information and selectively placing state advertising are fundamentally alien to me,” he added. In recent years, journalists were often verbally attacked by former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, who labelled several Czech media as “mafia”. Babiš is...
On 2 May, the Czech City of Brno announced that it will send two trams and six trolleybuses to its Ukrainian partner city Kharkiv. According to the municipality, sending the public transport vehicles will help war-torn Ukraine begin rebuilding the infrastructure and public services it has lost since Russia’s invasion in February. In a press release, the Mayor of Brno Markéta Vaňková explained that donating public transport vehicles is an effective and rapid way of helping Kharkiv at the moment. As such, Vaňková contacted the Brno City Transport Company to arrange the donation of the trams and trolleybuses which it planned on discontinuing as part of its fleet renewal. It is important to clarify that although the selected trams (T3) and trolleybuses (Tr14) would have been removed from circulation, they can still run and function smoothly. Confirming this, General Manager of the Brno City Transport Company Miloš Havránek explained: “These are vehicles that are still in use in our country, but we are able to let go of them without affecting the quality of services. They undergo regular service, so even though they date from the 1980s and 1990s, thanks to their good condition, they can still serve for many...

The Czech Republic has bought 2.4 terawatt hours (TWh) of gas for 8.5 billion crowns from majority state-owned utility CEZ to add to its state reserves in case of supply problems. The central European country is nearly 100% dependent for its gas on Russia, which cut gas supplies to Bulgaria and Poland last Wednesday after they refused to pay it in roubles, sparking concerns other countries could be similarly hit. “The Czech Republic is increasing its energy security with this purchase,” Pavel Svagr, head of the State Material Reserves Administration, wrote on Twitter. It is the first time the state has bought gas reserves. The price paid includes transport and storage, and the volume amounts to around 2% of the country’s 2021 consumption. The country also holds reserves of oil and oil products sufficient to cover its needs for three months or more. On Sunday, the Ministry of Industry and Trade Josef Síkela said that gas storage tanks in the Czech Republic are 30 percent full at the moment, adding that the country’s gas reserves have exceeded one billion cubic metres. Síkela said the target for 80 per cent of storage capacity to be filled by the start of the...

This year, the Czech Republic has chosen We Are Domi as its representatives on Eurovision 2022 which will take place in Turin next May with the song “Lights Off”. The group started as a spontaneous partnership as part of their studies in 2006 until it picked up for a more serious debut twelve years later. The group moved together from Leeds to Prague in 2020, when British restrictions stemming from COVID-19 were jeopardizing the band’s work, and have resided there ever since. “Lights Off” is the song with which...
There are different assessments about the impact of a Russian gas cut to the Czech Republic, but with the country receiving nearly all of its gas from Russia, the results could be dire. “When someone says to shut down the valves with Russian gas, they have no idea what they are talking about. I do not wish a return to Middle Ages unto anyone,” said former Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek, According to Topolánek, the Czech Republic could not quickly make up for the Russian gas. The Czech Republic is 98 percent dependent on Russian gas, compared to just 31 percent for Poland. The consequences of Russia stopping the deliveries would thus be destructive for both households and businesses. In Topolánek’s view, the Czech Republic could not depend on Germany or countries in south-eastern Europe either, as those would have to cover their needs first. The current prime minister, Peter Fiala, offers a slightly more sanguine outlook, saying yesterday that if Russia ceased its gas supplies to the Czech Republic, the country would manage the situation for some time but would then need help from the European Union, according to Czech news outlet Idnes. “We can deal with this for some...
