The tally of active cases of the new coronavirus in the Czech Republic has risen to 4,764, above the previous high of 4,737 seen in April, health ministry data showed on Sunday. The new cases are mostly registered in the north-east where a mine outbreak occurred and have so far been milder than before. The active cases have gone up as the daily has been above 100 over the past few days, outscoring the number of recoveries. Outbreaks are rising in the region, and Covid-19 is spreading to at-risk groups over the age of 65. The number of people in hospitals was 135 on Saturday, far below capacities of the national health system as presented by the government. On Friday, authorities tightened coronavirus restrictions in the Moravian-Silesian region. Under the tightening of restrictions, the compulsory wearing of face coverings has been reintroduced, while restaurant opening hours have been reduced. Workers crossing the borders of Poland and Slovakia to start their job must submit a negative test every two weeks for COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus. Additionally, checks have been implemented for individuals at border-crossings. The Czech Republic had 13,885 confirmed cases of coronavirus infection, with 113 new...
They wanted to be models. Mostly, college students, the young women submitted online applications that promised a “comfortable start” in the industry — only to learn that the modeling job was a pornography shoot. Detectives from the National Centre for Combatting Organized Crime have uncovered a group of nine people who offered paid professional modeling photograph opportunities, but in reality, they manipulate them into filming pornographic videos and put online under the channel “Czech casting”. The nine people are accused of human trafficking, sexual coercion and rape, spokesman Jaroslav Ibehej, told police on Friday. “From 2013, they have been advertised job offers presented as professional modeling photography for women over 18, promising earnings ranging from CZK 1,000 to CZK 5,000. However, according to our investigations, it was just a pretext to manipulate the women to produce and distribute pornographic videos,” said Ibehej. The group was well organized. “They were bringing the women to the casting place, signing contracts for the casting, verifying the age of majority, and conducting professional interviews,” added Ibehej. “Czech police is still in the process of identifying all the women recruited, filmed, coerced and defrauded by this conspiracy,” the complaint says. The videos were posted online...

A Czech woman from Nový Jičin could face up to eight years in prison for ignoring the home quarantine prescribed by the local hospital. In May, the woman was required to self-isolate for two weeks upon being discharged from the city hospital, where a few COVID-19 infections had occurred, Czech Television reported. The Czech woman told police that he felt stifled and stressed due to the enforced isolation. According to the Minister of Health Adam Vojtěch, the compulsory use of facemasks on public transport may return from October or November. “In autumn, the normal seasonal flu could compound health risks stemming from the coronavirus pandemic. Additional tests will also be needed to exclude other diseases,” says Vojtech. “The incidence of the disease will determine whether we need to wear face masks again. We need to prevent the spread of infection when other respiratory viruses will circulate,” added Vojtěch. Currently, masks are mandatory only in the Prague metro and in public transport in the Moravian-Silesian and Jihlava regions. It should also be worn in inpatient facilities and nursing homes, as well as indoors at public events. The compulsory use of the face mask was introduced by the Czech government on March 19, when citizens were “obliged to wear any form of respiratory protection in public places, including in the open air”. The Czech Republic had 13,238 confirmed cases of coronavirus infection by Tuesday morning, with 64 new infections on Monday. So far 8,373 people have recovered and 353 people have died. Comet Neowise might just be the biggest space snowball in decades. After two other promising comets discovered earlier this year — Swan and Atlas — fizzled and faded away, Comet C/2020 F3 (aka Neowise) appears poised to deliver a spectacular show. On Saturday, NASA published a picture by the Czech photographer Miloslav Druckmüller as an astronomy picture of the day. NASA’s Astronomical Picture of the Day (APOD) is a prestigious award for the most interesting photographs of the universe, selected and supplemented of caption by astronomers Jerry Bonnell and Robert Nemiroff. The Comet Neowise was seen above Prague Castle on 13 July 2020. According to NASA solar system ambassador Eddie Irizarry, it should remain visible just before and around the time of first light until July 11. The comet will then dip below the horizon as it transitions from being an early riser to a cocktail hour sensation, hopefully. It’ll start to be visible again in the evening around July 15-16. It should be a little easier to see during the second half of July when it’s a little higher in the sky. The comet’s closest pass by Earth will be July 23, which might make for a particularly exciting viewing opportunity if the...

Czech Republic’s naming process is steeped in tradition and cultural influence. Names carry a long, historical significance and are chosen with great care by parents. The use of academic titles in everyday life and the celebration of name days can come as a surprise to new expats, and the exclusion of middle names and patronymics can be a bureaucratic nightmare. Some names may be familiar, but others, such as Jíři, are unique to the region. Czech Name Day (“Svátek”) The Czech Republic is not unique in its celebration of name days; many countries, usually of Catholic or Orthodox background, have this tradition. Each name in the Czech Republic has a name day, and they originally corresponded with the saints’ feast days. In modern-day, name days carry little to no connection to their religious origins but...
