The Zličín station’s role as the terminus of the yellow metro line is set to change. The Prague Transport Company is unveiling plans to extend the line with a new station, named Depo Zličín, situated within the existing metro depot where trains are currently stationed for parking and maintenance. This outdoor station will be accompanied by a car park capable of accommodating 600 cars, developed simultaneously with the station. To facilitate this expansion, the depot will undergo enlargement, including the construction of two additional halls. The construction project is scheduled to start in 2026, with an estimated cost of 1.4 billion crowns allocated from the city budget. In a recent announcement, the Prague City Hall revealed the winner of an international architectural competition for the station’s design: the project proposed by the Czech studio PETR STOLÍN ARCHITEKT.

The official start of the Masaryk railway station’s reconstruction in Prague took place today. The project includes the installation of an elevated platform above the tracks, improved connections with Florenc, and an expansion from the current seven tracks to a total of nine. Additionally, a new vestibule and rest area will be introduced. The completion date for this extensive redevelopment is 2027, with a total cost estimated at CZK 3.39 billion. Transport Minister Martin Kupka (ODS), Director General of the Railway Administration (SŽ) Jiří Svoboda, and various representatives from the capital, construction firms, and Penta, the owner of surrounding buildings, inaugurated the renovation today. Czech lawmakers will meet with Interior Ministry officials and experts on Wednesday to discuss a possible tightening of gun laws in the wake of the tragic shooting at Charles University on 21 December, in which a student killed 14 people before turning the gun on himself. Until now, Czechia has been one of the countries that has been proud of its gun legislation, citing it as exemplary. This was evident during the negotiation of the 2017 EU Firearms Directive, which tightened up the possession of weapons in the EU. Czechia was actively against the new law, and after its approval, the country even filed an unsuccessful lawsuit. Recently, the Czech government proposed a new national arms legislation in response to the EU directive in 2022. The proposal was already in the final stages of discussion. The passionate Neapolitan has long found himself under running’s spell and is now a key figure in the world of road racing. In December last year, unemployment in the Czech Republic rose to 3.7 percent from November’s 3.5 percent. Since last January, this marked the first time that there were more registered job seekers than vacancies. According to data released by the Czech Labor Office, job seekers increased by 16,000 to 279,227, while vacancies decreased by 7,000 to 271,789. This trend of rising unemployment at the end of the year is not new, as seasonal jobs in agriculture and construction often end with the onset of winter. Additionally, more people register for benefits as their fixed-term work contracts and agreements terminate or as self-employed individuals temporarily suspend their activities. Employers continue to seek employees in technical and labor professions, with a long-term demand for skilled artisans. Roughly three-quarters of vacant positions seek applicants with primary or lower education, and two-thirds of positions are suitable for foreigners. Those most commonly without work are people with lower qualifications, specifically those educated without a high school diploma and those with primary education.
