The picture above is not showing Hanavský pavilon, but the view from Hanavský pavilon. There is actually a restaurant in this peculiar structure, but I warn you right here not to try it. It is totally overpriced and in my experience, the personnel is not very friendly. And, on top of it, the view you can enjoy without going into the restaurant. However, the structure of the pavilion and its history are quite interesting. The structure was built as a promotion of an ironwork factory for the exhibition in 1891 and was considered a temporary structure which should last only for the time of the exhibition. However, it was considered a valuable technical development, and after the exhibition, it was disassembled and rebuilt in a present location in Letná park. It is the first structure in Prague built from a cast iron, concrete, and glass. It was designed in baroque style and it is surviving more than 128 years longer than originally planned. The City of Prague has canceled its fireworks on New Year’s Eve replacing them by video mapping. We are talking about the fireworks held annually on the evening of January 1. “This is a step towards not only the citizens who are sensitive to loud noise, but also animals that are subjected to unnecessary stress. I am sure that everyone will like the new form of the New Year’s tradition,” said Prague City Councilor Jan Chabr (TOP 09). Last year’s show on Jan. 1 lasted 10 minutes and 52 seconds and cost some Kč 1.7 million, which was higher than the recent average of Kč 1 million for the shows. The theme was the Velvet Revolution of 1989. The previous administration also explored silent fireworks but found they are suited to much smaller shows such as garden parties. Light shows with drones, though, have already taken place for example in Warsaw, Poland. Many people have complaints not about the large organized show on January 1 at 6 pm, but the disorganized use of fireworks on midnight on December 31, and the use of random fireworks starting around Christmas. People, in particular, say it disturbs pets, who have acute hearing.
The European Commission has accused Czech mobile phone operators O2 and T-Mobile as well as the Czech telecom infrastructure provider CETIN of breaching EU antitrust rules. The move by the European Commission could make it more difficult for telecoms operators to do similar deals to share networks, seen as key to saving costs and reducing time in the face of regulatory barriers to mergers. The European Commission said the deal, which the country’s two biggest mobile operators and Cetin struck in 2011 and subsequently expanded, may breach the bloc’s competition rules. The network sharing agreement now covers all mobile technologies including 4G and 85% of the Czech population. “We have concerns that the network sharing agreement between the two major operators in Czechia reduces competition in the more densely populated areas of the country,” European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said in a statement. The EU competition enforcer, which opened an investigation in October 2016 and can hand out fines up to 10% of a company’s global revenue, said the deal may remove the incentives for the two operators to improve their networks and services. The first part of the long-awaited revitalization of the Prague riverfront area called Náplavka is coming to completion, making it one of the most attractive public embankments in Europe. In autumn 2019, nineteen vaults on the Rašín and Hořejší Embankments will be put into use. The masterplan of the Prague riverfront area includes a number of architectural interventions that will gradually encompass the vast riverfront area, almost 4 km in length. It is envisioned as a consistent whole, comprising a balanced architectural framework, established cultural and social content, and other program layers, as well as variable elements such as floating facilities, temporary installations and events. The stone part of the design is based on the vaults in the riverside wall; the floating part, on the large floating facilities (boat terminals, floating baths and floating toilets). Floating Pool The aim of the project is to restore the tradition of river baths through a modern badeschiff-type floating pool with complementary facilities complying with contemporary requirements. By the end of September, there will be a campaign on the streets of Prague focusing on the rules that tourists in the capital must adhere to. Carried out by Prague City Tourism in cooperation with the night mayor Jan Štern, it will draw attention to the behaviour of tourists in the most problematic locations of the Czech capital. The campaign reportedly builds on previous surveys that show that over 70 percent of tourists come to Prague for the first time and therefore do not know the rules that apply there. Thus, with visual prompts tourists will be reminded of the fact that silence is maintained after 10 pm and a ban on drinking alcohol on the streets is in place. They will also learn that they can be fined up to EUR 400 for disturbing the night peace. The water in the well, which was located in the cellar, was rumored to have a strange golden glow and people believed that gold was hidden there. A housemaid named Ľubomíra was cleaning in the basement and she bent over to look down the well and get a better glimpse of the golden glow. But she slipped on the wet floor and fell down the well. If medals were given out for consuming beer, the Czechs would have been wearing gold around their necks for the past 48 years. Since 1971, we have been sitting on top of the tree of the European ranking for the foamy beverage consumption. The Czech Beer and Malt Association (CSPS) drew attention to this fact during yesterday’s International Beer Day. “With 141 liters per capita, Czechs are at the top of the pan-European beer consumption chart. We came to the forefront in 1971 with a consumption of 160 liters; the highest consumption of beer (167 liters) was registered in 1992,” says Martina Ferancová, Executive Director of ČSPS. Last year was a record for breweries. The total production of Czech beer reached 21.3 million hectoliters. Czech breweries produced a record 21.3 million hectoliters of beer last year, an increase of 4.7 percent on 2017. The main driver of that increase was a jump in exports, though domestic consumption was also up on the previous year. On the other hand, consumption of draft beer is decreasing in the Czech Republic. Drought continued in all areas of the Czech Republic as soil drought has spread and currently affects three-quarters of the country, according to a statement released by the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI) on Thursday. The previous week was characterized by a higher temperature, which intensified mainly the evaporation from the soil and watercourses. Statistics from the institution showed that it was four degrees Celsius warmer than the average for the period, but only about a third of the normal amount of rain fell. Drought spread to 75 percent of the country’s territory from 64 percent in the previous week, as shown by drying and dying of vegetation. According to the institute, conifers are the most affected species. Some wildwood species, such as birch, hazel, sycamore, cherry, hornbeam, start to turn yellow prematurely. For watercourses, the water authorities begin to gradually regulate the pumping of water. Significant rain (from local storms) occurred at the weekend, but its impact was only short-termed. In the ’30s, there used to be happy crowds, sportsmen and many parties here. Now it’s a jungle taking over a place that used to be a pool and the only thing visible is the devastated diving tower. And everybody knows Bazén Barrandov was here. I have seen the diving tower many times from a train or a car, and when I finally got here, I was really surprised. The pool used to be really big and deep (of course because of the tower) and even if there are wild plants and basically jungle all over the place today, you can still feel the old glory. This place used to be a top spot for the high society of the ’30s in Czechoslovakia. At the top of the hill, there used to be a nice restaurant called Barrandovské terasy and there used to be swimming competitions held in Bazén Barrandov, so many people used to come here for a trip from Prague, for a coffee or a bite or to watch the competition or just for a swim. The Czech Republic had by far the lowest unemployment rate in the European Union in June, at just 1.9 percent. Next was Germany with a rate of 3.1 percent. According to Eurostat, all of the countries of emerging Europe boasted unemployment rates lower than the EU average of 6.3 percent, except Latvia, where 6.5 percent were unemployed. The region’s best performers aside from the Czech Republic were Hungary (3.4 percent), Poland (3.8 percent) and Romania (4 percent). Greece had the highest unemployment in the EU, at 17.6 percent. In the last decade, the highest annual unemployment rate in the EU was seen in 2013 (10.9%). Youth unemployment rate — under-25s — fell in both the EU28 and EA19. The EU28 has 3.17 million young unemployed persons, of whom 2.25 million were in the EA19. “In June 2019, the youth unemployment rate was 14.1% in the EU28 and 15.4% in the euro area, compared with 15.2% and 17%, respectively, on June 2018,” Eurostat said. Meanwhile, the preliminary flash estimate for July 2019 showed euro area annual inflation at 1.1% downed from 1.3% in the previous month, it said.
