Danish architecture studio Henning Larsen, in collaboration with global engineering firm Ramboll, unveils its winning proposal to revitalize Prague Central Station. The vision promises to reconnect the historic central station and terminal hall with Vrchlického Sady, and is set to stand as a welcoming gateway to Prague. This transformative design will reshape the city’s urban fabric while championing sustainability, adaptive reuse, and timber construction. The dominant feature of the design is the wooden roof structure, which connects Vrchlické sady, the new check-in hall and the planned tram stop. At the same time, the studio divided Vrchlické sady into three parts: a cultural zone, a “station square” and a zone for additional activities. Thanks to this, a suitable space will be created for events such as markets. The division will also significantly improve the clarity of the entire area. The proposal will also improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists, and brings ideas for the sustainable management of the entire area, such as efficient management of rainwater and a new approach to the park as an interpretation of the historical division. Christmas, traditionally a time of joy, cheer, and good times, is an especially lonely, sad & challenging time for homeless individuals. FriendShip Prague is an English-speaking NGO that provides support and friendship to people in need in Prague. Every Saturday they meet and serve approximately 80 people: everybody’s story is different. Only some of them have temporary low-wage jobs; many have both physical and mental health issues that prohibit them from finding work, remaining employed, and maintaining housing. Only a few have a roof over their heads, but they still struggle to afford groceries. How can you help them help homeless people, particularly at Christmas? First, with temperatures dropping, your donations of winter necessities and canned food can save lives and make the season more bearable for those who are less fortunate. The most needed items are currently warm clothing, shoes, blankets, and sleeping bags, but also more nutritious meals such as canned legumes, meat, and fish (which, while providing proteins, can be easily carried, and consumed on the streets). Hebe, the cosmetics and body care-focused drugstore giant, is set to open its first physical store in the Czech Republic, challenging rivals Teta, dm-drogerie markt, and Rossmann, while also targeting the position of Notino perfume stores. The expansion includes stores in Prague’s Harfa and Westfield Černý Most, scheduled to commence operations on December 6, 2023. Despite strong competition in the Czech market, Hebe plans further expansion in 2024, with store sizes ranging from 300 to 500 square meters. Hebe’s range of products includes mainly cosmetics and accessories: make-up, body, facial and hair care, perfumes and deodorants. The cosmetic offer is complemented by household chemistry, products for children and pregnant women and mothers, jewelry and accessories, home decoration products, tights and food (snacks). Penta will acquire the entire company ČSAD Praha Holding, which owns the terminal and the adjacent lucrative land. The transaction price has not been disclosed by the companies. Approximately 450 buses pass through this station every day, making it the largest bus station in the Czech Republic. Pavel Vráblík, the CEO of ČSAD Praha Holding, estimated in June that in 2019, ten million people passed through the station, but after the pandemic, the number has dropped by about one million. Vráblík stated in June that the Florenc 21 project would include the bus station as part of a new building, which would house office spaces and apartments. Everybody’s lives have been affected by Coronavirus, but people without homes have been hit hard by the sharp fall in tourism, the closure of public toilets, and nighttime curfew. The stigma around homelessness means that people can be unwilling to help. However, people can become homeless for many reasons outside of their control – such as losing their job, as many have during the crisis. They deserve compassion and support from those who can provide it. If you decide you have the means to help Prague’s homeless population, it may be challenging to know where to begin, so to educate ex-pats, nonprofit organisation Mistni Mistnim (Locals for Locals) founder Ester Pacltova and Jitka Modlitbová, the Director of Social Service with the Salvation Army in the Czech Republic, shed some light on common questions. Prague 1 has introduced a ban on nighttime entry to specific areas within the Old Town. The City Hall has revised traffic regulations, displaying prohibition signs with additional information in key streets such as Pařížská, Dlouhá, Rybná, Břehová, and Kozí. The proposed measure seeks to maintain a tranquil and secure environment, fostering an overall high quality of life. Residents of Dlouhá street, where a large number of popular nightlife venues are located, have long complained about the noise. The restricted area, delineated by Dvorak’s Embankment, Pařížská, and Revoluční, will be off-limits from 10 pm to 6 am. Each prohibition sign is accompanied by a supplemental indicator specifying the time. In the wake of Popeyes’ recent success in Prague, another iconic American fast-food giant is gearing up to make its mark in the Czech Republic. On December 2, 2023, the Prague Transport Company will unveil its “Christmas fleet” – trams and buses decorated in the festive spirit. The ceremonial lighting of the vehicles will take place at Vozovna Střešovice tram depot at 17:00. The blessing of the statue of St. Christopher, the patron saint of drivers and passengers, will take place at the same place one hour earlier. Entrance to the event is free. After the ceremony, the trams will set off in a Christmas parade and travel along the route Vozovna Střešovice – Hradčanská – Chotkovy sady – Nábřeží Edvarda Beneše – Štefánikův most – Náměstí Republiky. Visitors will be able to join the special ride for free. The number of seats is, however, limited. On the following days, the decorated trams will run on regular routes. After an unusually warm October, November brings a sudden drop in temperature, marking the start of winter.
