Jan Čižinský, the mayor of Prague 7, recently announced on social media that the long-awaited Štvanice footbridge will finally open on Friday, 28 July, at noon. Designed to link the districts of Holešovice and Karlín, the footbridge’s construction commenced in January, with architect Adam Gebrian confirming the Friday launch date. With a length of approximately 300 meters and a budget of around CZK 300 million, the Štvanice footbridge serves to facilitate pedestrian and cyclist access to the Štvanice island while also enhancing connectivity between the city’s districts. The need for ferry services, currently operating to establish the connection, will cease following the footbridge’s inauguration. On the Holešovice bank of the Vltava River, the footbridge will originate from Bubenské nábřeží, located in front of the entrance to the Prague Market Hall. On the Karlín side, it will lead to a cycle path running alongside the flood barrier on Rohanské nábřeží. The Czech national debt increased to a record of more than 3 trillion crowns (€125 billion) in the first half of the year, crossing the 3 trillion mark for the first time ever. Since the beginning of the year, debt has increased by 149.6 billion crowns. The debt ratio was 42.8 percent of GDP in the first half of the year, 0.1 percentage points higher than at the end of last year, according to the Czech Finance Ministry. The debt translates to each Czech citizen owing 280,574 crowns. The main reason for the increase in state debt was the sale of state bonds and treasury bills in order to continuously cover the state budget deficit, the ministry said in its quarterly report on state debt management. The budget deficit was 215.4 billion crowns in the first half of the year. Most of the state debt is covered by medium- and long-term government bonds issued on the domestic market. The real estate market for new apartments in Prague has shown signs of stagnation as prices remain unchanged despite an increase in sales. The market experienced a historic decline last year but is now showing signs of recovery. During the first half of this year, sales of new flats in Prague remained almost identical to the figures from the same period last year, with a total of 1,560 new flats being sold – just 20 more than the previous year. This marks the lowest levels of sales in two decades for the city. However, a closer analysis of the first and second quarters reveals a positive trend. In the first quarter, only 540 new flats were sold, which was one of the lowest results in the history of market monitoring. But, the second quarter saw a remarkable improvement, with sales nearly doubling. The resurgence in sales can be attributed to the availability of more affordable apartments, particularly with the introduction of the Výhledy Barrandov II project. The Czech Parliament gave its expected approval Wednesday to a defense treaty signed with the United States in May that would deepen military cooperation and make it easier to deploy U.S. troops on Czech territory. The lower house of Parliament voted 115-18 in favor of the Defense Cooperation Agreement. The treaty, endorsed by the Czech Senate last week, goes next to President Petr Pavel for his expected approval. The document would set a legal framework for possible deployment of U.S. troops in the country at a time of Russian aggression against Ukraine. “We can´t do without a strong alliance with other democratic countries in this situation,” Czech Defense Minister Cernochova told lawmakers in the lower house. She said, “the deal is absolutely in our national interest.” Cernochova signed the treaty together with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in Washington D.C. on May 23. The building is home to a plethora of halls that display centuries of both natural sciences and social change, dating back to the 1880s. One of the newest exhibits, however, looks at a moment in history often buried. The ‘50s is a decade often narrowed to the totalitarian rule that occurred from 1948 to 1953, but Professor Mikhal Stehlik, Deputy Director of the Museum, hopes to focus on the decade as a whole in a new exhibit. While the fifties were a decade of dictatorship and totalitarianism, he explained, they were also a time of great change that impacted the entire twentieth century. Prague is set to become the home of the Czech Republic’s first specialized center dedicated to assisting victims of sexual violence. T he facility, known as PORT, will be located in the Břevnov district and will provide essential services such as crisis support, treatment, counseling, and therapy.
