On Sunday, January 7 at 2 p.m. the annual Day of Silly Walks returns to Prague after 10 years. Taking place on International Day of Silly Walks, this short procession through Prague will gather fans of Monty Python at Náměstí Republiky in front of the Palladium entrance to pay tribute to the British comedy troupe’s Ministry of Silly Walks sketch. This flash mob, inspired by the iconic sketch from the British TV series “Monty Python’s Flying Circus,” promises a day filled with laughter and unconventional gaits. Participants will embark on a whimsical journey down Na Příkopě Street to the lower part of Wenceslas Square, showcasing an array of silly walks inspired by the aforementioned TV sketch. Wearing a suit with a bowler hat and a briefcase is encouraged, but not required. Participants are free to find a silly walk that works for them! Charles University Prepares Security Measures After Mass Shooting

Prague’s Charles University is preparing a list of possible security measures for its buildings following a mass shooting at the Faculty of Arts last month that left 14 dead. Deans of individual faculties will receive a list of measures tailored to their faculties, the rector of the university, Milena Králíčková, said on Tuesday evening. The crisis meeting also dealt with the coordination of activities taking place as part of the ‘Month for the Faculty’ event. These activities should return academic life to the building of the Faculty of Arts on Jan Palach Square in the centre of Prague, where 14 people were shot dead by a student before Christmas. Kralickova said the meeting also dealt with plans for the summer semester at the Faculty of Arts. “Classes will be held in alternative premises of other faculties or other institutions that have also offered the possibility of teaching, as well as online. On Christmas Eve, Prague airport experienced a remarkable event as the largest Boeing 747-8F freighter, known as the Queen of the Skies, touched down in the city. Renovation of Smíchov Train Station to Start Beginning of Next Year

The rail station in Smíchov will undergo a transformation to make it into a 21st-century transportation hub. The project should begin at the start of next year and cost over CZK 4 billion, a spokesperson for the Railway Administration said on Wednesday. All the station’s tracks and platforms will be renovated, while underpasses will be rebuilt and extended beneath the entire station, officials said. New lifts will also be installed. When completed, it will connect with an intercity bus terminal as well as the existing Smíchovské nádraží metro stop and tram lines. The nearby intercity bus terminal at Na Knížecí is already being phased out. The impact on train travel will be minimal during the planned work. How Public Transport in Prague Will Work on New Year’s Eve

In connection with the expected celebrations of the arrival of 2024, the capital is once again preparing traffic and security measures, which will mainly affect the center of Prague. On New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, an increased number of police officers, paramedics, and firefighters will be on duty. Moreover, the Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) will extend the operation of the metro on New Year’s Eve to approximately 2:30 am. The operation of tram day lines will end at approximately 10 pm, then the operation of night lines will start. Until approximately 3:30 the interval between trams will be 15 minutes, then, until 7:00 it will be 20 minutes. Prague City Hall’s New Year Gift – Affordable Attractions for All!

The Prague City Hall has disclosed the details of the New Year surprise it has in store for its citizens on January 1, 2024. Earlier reports indicated that this surprise would serve as compensation for the decision to forgo fireworks, video mapping, and other mass celebrations on New Year’s Eve. The authorities deemed large-scale festivities inappropriate given the backdrop of the war in Ukraine and the challenging economic situation. Instead, Prague City Tourism plans to reduce the cost of visiting popular attractions for one day (January 1): Prague Zoo and the Botanical Gardens in the Troja neighborhood will be open to everyone, with a visit costing only 1 crown. Prague Closes Gates on Čertovka and Embankments due to Flood Threat

Water levels in Czech rivers and streams continued to rise on Monday due to heavy rain and melting snow.  At least one of the three flood levels was reported at over 160 measuring stations, with the highest level reported in 15 places. The flood warning issued by the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute is still in force for almost the entire country until further notice, with the exception of the southern part of the South Bohemian Region. The metropolis decided to close the embankments and the floodgates at Čertovka. “Extraordinary security measures related to the increased risk of flooding will be in force for Prague residents and visitors from 1 pm. The embankments will be closed and other flood barriers will be activated,” said Prague Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda (ODS). Flows have increased on the crucial watercourses, which are the Vltava and Sázava rivers. Although their peak and future decline are expected, and the Berounka has already peaked, the increased flow will continue for several days. Prague Launches Annual Sports Week

Prague has launched the Sports Week (Týden sportu zdarma) project under which residents have free access to sports facilities. Headed by the Mayor of Prague Bohuslav Svoboda, city authorities noted that residents can choose different offers from sports clubs and venues that will be available in the last week of the year. Among the disciplines traditionally available are badminton, squash, beach volleyball, floorball, big and table tennis, football, swimming, fitness, climbing, hockey and others. Councilor for Education and sports noted that “Prague has prepared a small Christmas present for all sports enthusiasts in the form of a week of sports in all kinds of sports venues, completely free of charge.” He pointed out that it offers an opportunity to try a new sport, get back in shape after Christmas feasts and be more physically active, calling on the residents to take advantage of the offers.
